"The spokesman says Orr has researched the issue and will pay in full as soon as possible."

Hey here's a theory, or the plot to a bad 80s movie:

1. Let Detroit get too fail to ever not fail
2. Bring in controllable, corrupt, and possibly inept/unqualified EM
3. Let EM take the finishing blows to make it unlivable there (raise property taxes / cut services)
4. Force most of the blah communities out of their homes, demolish, rebuild mcmansion developments
5. Whitewash what happened with uplifting Detroit 20/20 revitalization crap.
6. Make the corrupt money kilpatric made look like penny candy with all of the contracts you need to now fill. Also celebrate with all your insanely rich business fiends about how you got most of the blahs out of detroit

FTA:Orr has apparently not paid $16,000 in unemployment taxes

How long do you have to be on unemployment to accrue that much in tax liability? Unemployment benefits in NC maxed out at $535/wk until recently and they withhold 10% for the taxes on that.  That's 30 weeks just to get $16k in benefits. If the numbers hold, and they probably don't, 30x9 = 270 weeks.

To say nothing of his employability, this guy shouldn't be allowed to touch ANYONE'S finances in the first place. Let alone have control of an entire city's.  I claim this guy was installed because he's highly corrupt and easy to manipulate.

Great Migration

The cities under emergency management, Detroit, Flint, Pontiac, Allen Park, Benton Harbor and Ecorse, account for 49.5 percent of the state's black population, according to U.S. Census data. They contain only 2.1 percent of the white population.

the liberal media source of that.

/my white friends who live in Detroit feel all special now
//especially since Snyder just reinstated the emergency manager law that was vetoed by the effing voters in the last election
///Detroit needs help, for sure. This is a piss poor way to go about it.
////can't do a simple credit check on someone you're hiring for EMERGENCY FINANCIAL MANAGER? Really? You couldn't figure out the media would get to that? Puts a lot of f--king trust in the hiring process.

Actually, it's like they already had one.

Aidan: So... Man. The whole EFM thing gives me the willies (especially the y'know, not will of the people part) but I do wonder sometimes... What else could we actually agree to do?

Not sure I see much of an alternative.  Good to see a few posters in here already knocking each other over to blame Detroit's woes on a Republican governor.  Keep up the good work!  The party must be defended at all costs!

It's not your religion.  It's not your family.  It's not even a group of your friends.   It's a farking group of politicians who you think you agree with the most regarding the role of government.  It's okay to admit that they occasionally fark up; Detroit being a classic example on the Democratic side.

This country's always been in debt. That's how it works.

Umm, I think they are referring to the taxes payed to unemployment while working.

Wow, a lawyer and a politician plus he feels superior to the tax laws.

What a truly unique combination.

Walker: "Detroit, why you so f*cked up? Can't you do anything right?"

To be fair: this clown was handed to them by the Governor.
Seems no-one in Lansing thought through that part of the EM law:
When you take over Benton Harbor, Flint, Pontiac and Detroit, you can no longer feign outrage at further fark-ups.
And you already used "how bad it was" and "we can do better" as your justification for taking over.
So you're pretty much out of wiggle-room to disown mis-steps, the lack of results, or to biatch about the media not being 'fair'.

Enjoy!

I think we need to let Canada just annex Detroit using the power of Eminem Domain.

DrRatchet: A lien on a house in Detroit? I'm as much for futile, symbolic gestures as the next guy, but that's taking things a bit far.

The house in question is in Maryland.  It's even mentioned in the first line of the article.
