(Sly Oyster)   This toaster solves the non-existent problem of burning a low resolution news image onto a piece of bread every morning so you can have your news and eat it too   (slyoyster.com) divider line 48

Damn, they're not kidding when they say 'low resolution'. I did not know WTF that was supposed to be until he looked at the calendar.
If anything, it was:

If you must make a dynamic image-printing toaster then at least do it right, with a CO2 laser or something that can focus down onto individual bread pixels.

To be fair the idea is pretty neat. It's the implementation that sucks. Unfortunately it's neat in a novelty sort of way so if you spent the money to make this actually produce good results it would be too expensive and still have no market.

Lots of houses and apartment buildings filter their water as it enters from outside with inline filters.

People have to do something with their Arduino and Rasperry Pi. It's like the RC industry. They overlap actually.

I don't know where you guys live, but it wouldn't occur to me to use anything but.  Then again, our municipal water supply is the original Canadian source for Dasani, so there's that.

If you make a toaster that can make a pretty good pic of Jebus consistently... That WILL sell, at least down here in the south.

For a while i have had the idea to make sell stainless steel inserts that you can hook into the catch basket of your toaster.
They would be laser cut with a picture or design.

The insert would act to cast an image onto the bread during the toasting process.

Of course.. i would get the thing off the ground by making Jesus toast toaster inserts and selling them as a novelty item through such outlets as archi macphee and similar.

Of course, i think someone is already doing this, you can purchase purpose built toasters that cast an image of hello kitty on the toast. And what not.

But, if i had a laser cutter, its something i might offer as a custom service. You want something put on toast, send me an image and $30 and you got it

Also, what sucks about that, is that it is making a positive image, so you aren't really toasting the bread, just the bits with the graphic, and that my friend, is shiatty toast. Its more like selectively stale bread than toast really. My inserts would have a negative image leaving a faint outline of the graphic in positive on the toast

This stupid thing is really bothering me. It's so bad that it just cries out for someone else to do it properly. The other ones I linked to earlier are an improvement but I still think there's a better way to do it. Wish I had the free time to take on a new project.

The solution is not to make heating elements which themselves burn the image into the toast but to have preheating (or heat-absorbing) arrays of small, independently-moving, metal squares. Have 1/8"x1/8" squares which offers a 64dpi image with some gradient burning, for a nearly 200x200 image.

Or a laser; a laser is much easier.

Make the squares small and reflective and bounce a powerful light off them. DLP toaster.

This is what happens when you let an art major get near electrical components.  Nobody else would decide to execute this using servos and accept a 5x5 resolution as good enough.  However, the wooden exterior and a 2 and a half video of him futzing around in the kitchen making toast with no shot of the results give me pause.  He's either intentionally wasting our time or functionally retarded.

Yep, but thats the whole toaster, I'm talking inserts to turn any pop up toaster into an imprinting toaster.
Instead of a $40 appliance, just a $5 novelty

That's much harder actually. You could pull off your own toaster with swappable plates, but expecting the size and structure of your off-the-shelf generic toasters to be standardized as far as fit goes would be a disaster. And even if it worked in 99.9% of cases, that 0.1% might cause a fire. Maybe if you could make a little cage that the bread goes inside, then is inserted as if it were toast.. maybe.
