Mole, black and grim, brandishing his stick and shouting his awful war-cry, 'A Mole! A Mole!'

Now these voles can make themselves useful by changing cute little light bulbs.

Make an animal sufficiently small and fuzzy and cute, humans will fall over each other to build them tiny objects so they can perform human-like actions and cause the rest of us to go "Awww".

/wonder what vole tastes like.

Larry Salzberg funded this, with hearty supports of "splunge!" from his writing staff.

Let the little bastards die.

I hate voles.  Destructive little bastards like to eat the roots off my trees.  We had an apple tree.  When it finally got big enough to make apples they were the best apples I had ever had in my life.  The next spring it didn't come back because the farking little voles ate the roots off of it.

Q: How many voles does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

A: Depends on the size of the lightbulb

I read that as British people making cute ladders meaning that aquatic rodents were climbing them, as in "you make a better door than a window". "You make a better ladder than a slide" or such.

Fish ladders!

I'm not making a point. I just like the sound of it.

I watched a live-action version of The Wind in the Willows recently. It has human actors with a little discreet "animal" make-up playing Mole, Ratty, Badger, and Toad of Toad Hall.

You may know Toad from Little Britain--he's the short fat one. Great casting. The Old Washerwoman who helps Toad to break out of jail is played by Newfoundland's own Mary Walsh, whom I love as a comedienne and satirist. I'd vote for her if she ran for office.

Oh, wait. This isn't Amazon. Why am I telling you schlubs?

But my point is that water voles are what Ratty was, namely "water rats", not to be confused at all with sewer rats. I thought when I was younger he might be a muskrat, but apparently water rats look like tiny beavers without the paddle tails and are closely related to other voles.

Cute, aren't they?  They look like something a beaver would give its kittens as a pet.

Like rogue beavers and muskrats, water rats live in a hole in a river bank and like voles they feed in meadows, especially water meadows. They are nearly as cute as hedgehogs, without the spines or the massive flea infestations.

English bums and country people cook hedgehogs by wrapping them in clay and baking them in camp fires. The clay turns into crude pottery and takes off the spines--and fleas--and hair. Somebody once imported some Hedgehog flavoured potato chips from the UK and sold them in Montreal. I imagine they taste just like Roast Chicken potato chips.
