timujin: Aren't reporters supposed to be impartial, to not get involved in either a protest or a counter-protest? If you move into a potentially violent crowd, and all protests have to potential to turn to violence, then you have to understand that you might get caught up in that violence. If you take an active part, like say pushing one of the protesters, then you have given up that veil of impartiality and are almost certain to get caught up.

1) They never said he push him. Never said anyone pushed him. Hell he could have just tripped.
2) The union guy wasn't yelling about getting pushed. If he did get pushed it had nothing to do with his violence. The DA just basically said that if someone pushes you (or you say that someone pushes you) you have the right to start wailing on someone. Or and this is more likely, he doesn't want to waste his time with an assault and battery case that should just be pleaded out.
3) The reporter was there with the counter protest. He made no bones about it. People do reports all the time about things they think are wrong. Most of the time they are called investigations.
4) My comment was about how uncivil our discourse is, Not saying this is anything new! Just wish it wasn't the case.

In any case, "provoking the crowd" is probably not a good idea in those types of situations.

no, it's not.  sometimes you might get lucky and get that one bit of footage you wanted for the evening news lead story...or you could wind up with a broken nose and a smashed camera.

The smashed camera would have actually worked out better for him. Without the footage to prove he was a lying douche, all we would have is the fact that he is obviously a douche with no hard evidence to prove that he was lying.

Steven Crowder isn't a Fox News reporter, he's barely a contributor.

He is however 100% douchebag.

Stone Meadow: How is 'editing the video and claiming to have been sucker punched' not a criminal offense under the umbrella of 'filing a false police report'?

Did he say something he should have know was false in the police report?  Did he give an edited video tape to the police?  Not clear but if he did, I'm pretty sure those are crimes.  I think he just guilty of being a huge douche.

He did give the edited tape to the police.  The full video didn't come out until the DA's office requested it.

The only reason that I can think of is because they can't tell with 100% certainty from the tape if Crowder pushed him or not. From the DA's decision it seems pretty clear that he believes Crowder pushed him, but he doesn't have the clear cut evidence to open up what will become a high profile can of worms. And just for the record, I also believe that Crowder pushed him. Who watches a person fall in front of them and their first reaction is to throw up their hands in the "I didn't do it" motion?

One might even go so far as to say that editing video then submitting it as evidence constitutes perjury.

monoski: One might even go so far as to say that editing video then submitting it as evidence constitutes perjury.

Or at least filing a false police report.

I find it amusing that Crowder calls himself a reporter. As far as I can tell the only reporter involved in this whole fiasco is the cameraman. You know, the guy who recorded events without influencing or interfering with them.

Wait, I didn't follow this much when it was happening as I had some other things going on, but there were 10,000 people protesting a ban on making joining the union mandatory for employment? Did I read that right? As in you can't legally work certain jobs in the state of you're not in a union?

Yeah, that was pretty much the same conclusion I came to. Under the circumstances a reasonable person, seeing an innocent party fall down in front of them bends over and extends a hand to help them up...NOT play the drama-queen.

Sounds like justice was served all 'round.

Do they? My understanding of the ethical boundaries reporters are supposed to follow is that they observe without interacting.  Can you give me some other examples where reporters cross that line?
