Funny. The NBC link mentioned what actually happened and how many Marines were killed. The FOX link mentions the farking operating budget for the facility.

Of course, the FOX article is greened.

This is God giving payback to the U.S. military because they are babby killers, infidels, women who should be at home making sammiches and homos. If we weren't so busy playing World Police and sticking out noses in where they didn't belong, none of this would happen.

If it exploded in the tube, it sounds like an initial round failed to launch but became armed. When another round was loaded on top, Kablooey.

Only way I can think that it would have exploded when picked up would be if it was a timed fuze that somehow became armed, but usually practice drills involve contact fuses as they are cheaper and more reliable.

Old ammo is... old. The way that it usually works is new ammo gets tested by lot (ie a factory makes (x) number of ammunition items and say 1% of those (randomly chosen, not by the manufacturer) get used to make sure that they work, out of those lets say that the specs call for (n%) to work as advertised. In addition most ammo has a shelf life that has 3 steps that can be simply categorized as (will work, should work and unreliable, so get rid of it.). It's actually a bit more complicated than that but in essence that's how it works.

If a problem is discovered in the field then all of that lot is removed from service... however if the failure is not considered hazardous then it get moved to a "Training use only" status. In other words training ammo is slightly more risky to use than active service ammo but the risk is supposed to be "May not fire off at all" but never "Might blow up on human contact". The thing is that sometimes there will be a round in an already identified as defective lot that has an unidentified problem making it even more hazardous than usual to handle normally.

This sounds like one of those rare occurrences (based upon the NBC report).

I live in Raleigh (NC) but am a member of a halau (hula school) in Fayetteville. I'm down there every weekend and usually it's pretty quiet during Friday night and Saturday morning practices but this past weekend the walls were shaking from the ordinance booms  the entire time at the rec center where we meet.

My halau sisters (all of them connected to Fort Bragg) said that the Marines were having joint exercises with the Army.  What's going on? Seems like there's an elevated level of preparedness going on.

/my condolences to the families of those killed in Nevada

Thanks for providing this intelligent commentary.

I would like to add that Hawthorne is basically where a lot of munitions from the Navy, Marines and Army gets stored for extended periods.  Depending on their training need, they'll ship it to training bases in the (usually) western states.  Ordnance typically goes over the road due to the extreme hazard from a mishap should something go wrong during transport in an aircraft.
Why you don't transport ordnance in planes unless you have to.

More precisely, because somebody at the GOP will use this accident as a reason why all military bases should be immune from all future sequesters.  Because, you know, they happened at the same time, therefore it's possible to spin the two as being related.

Hell, somebody on the scriptwriting team for the more shrill and vocal of the FOX talk shows already had the "[X] is why military bases should be immune from [Y] meddling" argument written up.  Now they can just drop "Hawthorne" and "Obama" into place and go rant for an hour on television, and their viewer/voting base will go lap it up.

It's nothing special, I was at Camp LeJeune for a few years, there's a yearly exercise between the 82nd and II MEF at about this time.  I can't remember what it was called.  I think it had "Dragon" in the name somewhere though.  No elevated level of preparedness, just something they do every year.

Please, not here.
Some grieve or work through their outrage at the injustices of the world through prayer. Even as an atheist I can respect that.
I use silent contemplation or just look out the window for a few seconds. I'm pretty sure it doesn't improve the world much more than prayer does. I mean, it helps me, and I'm part of the world so...there you go.

There are plenty of news about stupid religious things where debates on religion is natural and will be welcome. Someones expression of grief (however small/swift/distant) about someones' death isn't really where I'd like to see my fellow non-believers direct attacks.

Prank Call of Cthulhu: You people are a major pain, you know? A few good men die, and you're all gung ho to make jokes about it. I don't know what's wrong with the generation. Kill a few Marines, and you think it's funny. All the young men, these brothers, are willing to go to the shores of hell, and you're cracking jokes over this heartbreak. Ridge, jungle, desert, mountain, these guys fight with pride. Of the Marines' dedication there can be no doubt, and it's wrong to make fun of their death. Before dishonoring them with smart ass comments, why don't you tell it to the Marines?

I always feel it's sad and ironic for soldiers to get killed before they even get a chance to go to war.
Hope the death count doesn't grow anymore, and I hope we take care of their families.
Sad news.

Prank Call missed by not putting Full Metal Jacket in there somewhere.
Neat factoid: in boot camp, that qualifies as a Christmas movie.

That was my thought as well... "We need something!  Anything!" *looks at website* "Oh, budget is very popular lately"... but, my current feelings on "journalists" these days is they probably just randomly cut and pasted something from their website... no thought involved.

I'm in the "we have no real information, but you have to give us a certain number of words in the next 5 minutes" camp.  They pulled it straight from the "installation overview" page on the official website, which is all of 2 paragraphs long.  They got what they could, as quickly as possible.

I'm sure it's nothing more than a run-of-the-mill act of workplace violence, like Ft. Hood was.  Or T2 on the Iowa.

That's the public figure. The Black Ops budget is 100 times that, maybe 1000 times. Its the weapons version of Area 51.

There are dozens of copies of this report all around, every one of which has the line "Nevada was chosen for the location because of its remoteness in the wake of a crippling explosion at the government's main depot in New Jersey in the 1920s."

But the Black Tom explosion was in 1916, and the larger Morgan Depot explosion in 1918. The Nixon disaster was in 1924, but had nothing to do with any depot, although the fire threatened but never reached an arsenal. Thanks, AP.

Having read both articles, and despite all of the clear social signals that I'm supposed to take this as an absolutely shocking tragedy, I still just can't find a tear to shed over a bunch of young war pigs getting their fingers burned playing with their kaboom toys.
