Oh man that sucks.

Hawthorne is an interesting place. I've passed through there many times on the way from Vegas up to Reno/Sacramento.

wildcardjack: That is sorta funny... Marines killed at an Army base... Sounds like a cover up to me.

Perhaps they are marine core soldiers?

Annnnd, this is relevant because???

/cues "because OBAMA" replies

Because at FOX, money is more important than people.

More precisely, because somebody at the GOP will use this accident as a reason why all military bases should be immune from all future sequesters.  Because, you know, they happened at the same time, therefore it's possible to spin the two as being related.

Hell, somebody on the scriptwriting team for the more shrill and vocal of the FOX talk shows already had the "[X] is why military bases should be immune from [Y] meddling" argument written up.  Now they can just drop "Hawthorne" and "Obama" into place and go rant for an hour on television, and their viewer/voting base will go lap it up.

Maybe one day there'll be a standing conventional army that all this infantry combat training will be applicable towards. One can hope.

Even though I pray (Rabbis telling me I got to do something while at synagogue when I am in the pew!), I do admit that snarking on Fark has alot more upfront proof of it's effects than prayer does.

trekkiecougar: I live in Raleigh (NC) but am a member of a halau (hula school) in Fayetteville. I'm down there every weekend and usually it's pretty quiet during Friday night and Saturday morning practices but this past weekend the walls were shaking from the ordinance booms  the entire time at the rec center where we meet.

My halau sisters (all of them connected to Fort Bragg) said that the Marines were having joint exercises with the Army.  What's going on? Seems like there's an elevated level of preparedness going on.

/my condolences to the families of those killed in Nevada

It's nothing special, I was at Camp LeJeune for a few years, there's a yearly exercise between the 82nd and II MEF at about this time.  I can't remember what it was called.  I think it had "Dragon" in the name somewhere though.  No elevated level of preparedness, just something they do every year.

Please, not here.
Some grieve or work through their outrage at the injustices of the world through prayer. Even as an atheist I can respect that.
I use silent contemplation or just look out the window for a few seconds. I'm pretty sure it doesn't improve the world much more than prayer does. I mean, it helps me, and I'm part of the world so...there you go.

Not here?! Well first things first, welcome to Fark. Punch bowl is on the left and nametags are on the right.

Second thing, what is a self proclaimed "Athiest" doing defending the merits of prayer to a G-d worshipping Jew who is defending the rights of one of your fellow Athiests to snark on the merits of prayer?

There are plenty of news about stupid religious things where debates on religion is natural and will be welcome. Someones expression of grief (however small/swift/distant) about someones' death isn't really where I'd like to see my fellow non-believers direct attacks.

Hope the death count doesn't grow anymore, and I hope we take care of their families.

I'm in the "we have no real information, but you have to give us a certain number of words in the next 5 minutes" camp.  They pulled it straight from the "installation overview" page on the official website, which is all of 2 paragraphs long.  They got what they could, as quickly as possible.
