I wonder if there is something like that available for home use (i.e., that I can buy, not make)?  I save my cans and crush them for recycling but it's an awful lot of work to do manually.

Needs a "magazine" type feeder mechanism so you can load in a couple dozen cans real fast and have it work through them while you go back to watching Hee-Haw.

I just place the cans on the floor and jump up and down on them with my army boots on. Quick and effective.

It's also good therapy as I sometimes imagine I am stamping on the head of my ex boss.

I was expecting a finger to get trapped in one of the folds of the can.

I'm all into it now!!

Other than the last part, that was my initial reaction.  one at a time seems lame.  loaded it up and come back in 30 minutes would be better.

As a teen, a friends grandfather collected his cans and about once a month I'd go over and help crush them.  Lining the street with em and running them over was the fastest way we came up with getting the job done.

My recycle place wont take crushed can, people put dirt and things inside for weight. I scrap a lot of large industrial extrusion so I also toss the empty cans in a bag and they all run through a machine one at a time. I usually get about  $ 500.00 for the extrusion and 5 bucks for the cans.

As somebody from Michigan, I cringe as I watch a machine that is able to destroy 10 cent deposits at a rate of $120/hour.

I want to see what would happen if you put a full can in there, looks like it has the power to crush a full one.

Any recycling center I've ever taken returnables to won't accept them crushed. Maybe they like to do it themselves.

In reality, it takes us ages to accumulate enough to make it worthwhile to drive to the recycling place so we'll go only once a year or twice, maybe.  It's worth the effort if you're doing it for a hoot.  Otherwise, well, it gets us another case of beer in return.

This.

I found walmart in Burton, MI selling a plastic manual can crusher, and had to laugh.  You could tell they had been on the shelf since the store was opened.

Between what Wifey goes thru in Diet Mntn Dew and me in beer and bourbon, I have to hit the redemption center about every 3 or 4 weeks

aluminum has hovered around 88 cents/lb mark (for ingots) for about the last 30 years, they pay about half that.  At 35 cans / lb, that makes each can worth about a penny.  Do you seriously want to waste the energy not only running a motor, but driving to a recycling center?  It's no wonder why people don't recycle.

Full disclosure:I am a capitalist pig.I vote conservative and think that the way to get people work is to have businesses expand. I am all for a good ROI calculation.

That being said, it could be that you should devote a bit of space for your recyclable trash and make the effort to go to the recycling center because it is simply the right thing to do.You are free to make this choice and be a good person.

Just don't start legislating that BS.Then it will all go to hell in a hand basket.
