I'm calling it now: Self-hating lesbian who turned born-again as a way of overcompensating. Not that I've ever heard of this person before, but at this point, homophobes' motivations are about as diverse as romantic comedies' plots.

Way to go, Michelle.  Either you're whoring out your spirituality for publicity or you're sincerely a bigot and a solid reason why more and more Americans are actively grouping Christianity with fundamentalist Islam.

Either way, Jesus would probably not like you very much.

Man, Bob Dylan gets religion and we get a lot of songs with awesome gospel style layered over blues about how quitting drugs is hard and getting your life back on track is painful but worthwhile.  The Beatles get (strange) religion, and you get five-minute sitar ballads about how everyone should relax and get along and shiat.

Stupid pop-rock bullshiat kiddies get religion and we get rants about evil homosexuals.

That's a pretty good illustration of why modern music has kinda gone downhill since the 80s, I think.  The singers just aren't real people with actual life experiences and problems and so on anymore.

So, I just checked Wiki, since I didn't realise she had a career - and it has a whole paragraph debating whether or not she's gay, ending in a firm "Probably." Of course. Like many others, I thought she was gay. Still do, in fact. Whatever delusions she's under, Jesus-induced or otherwise, San Francisco was a poor choice of venues for sharing that opinion. Not that it would be any better in Mobile or Des Moines. That said, I would like more context than what was given in the article. It's second-hand info from a concert organizer. Maybe he missed the sarcasm. Probably not, but it'd still be good to have a better understanding of what prompted her to say what she did.

Dayum, what a shame. I liked her music. Back in the day she was pretty righteous -- hard left-leaning, populist '80s folkie who even recorded a track ("Fogtown") with pro-queer punks MDC on her album "Short Sharp Shocked," on which front cover is a photo of her getting choked by a cop with his baton.

Michelle, I am disappoint. Go fark off to Topeka and the Phelpses, or go join those Warren Jeffs-worshipping freaks in Colorado City. Or better yet, rediscover that queer Anarchist folkie that you used to be, cast off the holy roller yoke and apologize to your fans.

In other news, her 1st Amendment right to speak her stupid bigoted opinions has backfired with other people expressing their right to respond to her stupid bigoted opinions by ending her already failing career.  Would be even better if her manager dropped her too, but at some point some other anti-gay crusader will probably cry that she's being oppressed.

From wikipedia:

"There are some inconvenient truths that I'm now a born again, sanctified, saved-in-the-blood Christian. So much of what's said and done in the name of that Christianity is appalling. According to my Bible, which I didn't write, homosexuality is immoral. But homosexuality is no more or less a sin than fornication. And I'm a fornicator with a capital F."

Shocked was arrested during the November 29, 2011, eviction of the Occupy Los Angelas movement.

She seems to be conflicted at the very least. There may have been more of a message she was trying to spout off who knows though.

Yeah, very surprising.  But she always seemed a little....off.  Delusional people frequently turned to fundamentalist religion for comfort.  I wouldn't be surprised to see her reject all this born-again crap a few years from now, but the damage is done.

2013-03-19 06:39:11 AM
Being cynical, I wonder if this was a desperate attempt to rally her career by endearing herself to the born-again crowd who will inevitably hail her as heroine.  Since her old audience wasn't buying many of her records, and the evangelicals probably had no clue who she is, it almost seems like a smart career move.

That's f*cking disappointing, considering it was an intentional slap in the face to the people who supported her (well...anyone with a sense of decency).I hadn't thought about her in years until I heard "Anchorage" the other day while I was out shopping. Oh well, maybe she'll get a gig busking at next year's CPAC or making videos with Victoria Jackson, because she can pretty much kiss her touring career goodbye.

The one positive thing to come out of it, is that the public reaction shows how much attitudes have changed in the past 20 years or so. DOMA will be history very soon, I have no doubt.

Those people are a dying breed, so it's a pretty poor strategy for any entertainer.  Is Victoria Jackson getting a lot of big acting gigs?  Have you seen Ted Nugent do anything besides speak to other wackos at conventions?  What's Stephen Baldwin up to these days?  It's a pretty bad idea to throw your lot in with one specialized group of nuts whose numbers are dwindling every day.  You'd only do it if you really believed in what those nuts believe.

Short Sharp Shocked is great, also Texas Campfire recordings. Several posters have used the term 'self hating lesbian' closeted, etc. I'd say it's spot on. Too bad. Religion has negated her talent.

I want to see studies of religious zealots brains. Guessing mental illness and religious zealotry are very closely aligned in terms of what areas of the brain function or over function or are missing. Bet Republicanism is right in there with it too.

We won't ever see it, but it'd be awesome to understand why some people cannot be reasoned with, who glom onto stories with no possible explanation based in reason, and who actively seek out to condemn in others what they are most concerned exists in themselves.

No. She has (had) a dedicated following. Most of them are lesbians. You don't do revival albums/tours and drop the fans that still remember and love you to go chasing a group of people who, once they hear what you're famous for, aren't going to like you no matter what you say about homosexuals nowadays.

I doubt this was calculated. It comes off as more of an on-stage breakdown. Ugly, whatever the cause.

Hah! In 1996 or thereabouts I saw her in Austin at a club called The Back Room. Its nickname was "The Black Doom" because it usually hosted metal, punk, and thrash shows. Jim_Callahan: Man, Bob Dylan gets religion and we get a lot of songs with awesome gospel style layered over blues about how quitting drugs is hard and getting your life back on track is painful but worthwhile.

Hebjamn: The Sinead O'Connor career suicide retirement home welcomes its newest residient

If O'Connor had been given a chance to fully explain why she tore up the pic, and the media had been doing its job, I actually think she would have gotten a lot of sympathy and support.   For those who don't know, O'Connor had been the victim of systematic abuse in the "Magdalene Laundries" in her teens.  (She was forced into the system at 14 and only got out after 4 yrs)

Magdalene Laundries were a sort of "reform school" run by the Catholic church which basically imprisoned girls and forced them into hard labor of running actual laundries.  The entire system was endorsed and supported by the government and 10's of thousands of young girls had been forced into they system over their years of operations.  It was virtual slavery and many of the girls were subjected to severe physical and sexual abuse from the Nun's, Priests and Catholic Lay Members who ran the places.

The full horror of what happened in the Magdalene Laundries really didn't come out until the last few years after so many women came forward recounting their mistreatment.  The Govt of Ireland just issued an official apology just this February, 2013, to the women for their role in the mess.  Some women were dropped off as orphans at young ages and were never allowed to leave, with many dying fairly young due to their exposure of chemicals over their 14 hr work days.

I've read the story of one young woman who had been dropped off with the Sister's of Magdalene at age 2 and by age 7 she was already responsible for cooking breakfast for something like 40 other children, by age 19 she was impregnated (by someone obviously working for the sisters as she wasn't allowed to leave the facility) and that "immoral" act was used as the basis for making her stay (her twin daughters were put up for adoption) and by age 51, she was dead - simply worn out by 40+ years of hard labor.

If people would have actually listened to what Sinead O'Connor was saying (and the reasons for tearing up the Pope's photo - which was because he was publicly defending the Magdalene Sisters and the Magdalene Laundry system at that time) a lot of this "abuse" going on in the church would have been exposed 20 yrs earlier.

I don't think she was ever full blown, out of the closet lesbian. In fact, I believe she was/is married for a time. I think the fact that she dressed kinda mannish, had super super short hair and sang folky lefty type songs, every one assumed she was and the lesbian community allowed her honorary entry into the club. Kinda like Ani DeFranco.

I think it's safe to say the membership has been revoked.

What an idiot.  God doesn't hate f*gs, at least according to the New Testament.  It does encourage people to be not gay, but through love, understanding, and example.  Gays can disagree with that, of course, but the virulent anti-gay negativity isn't supposed to be there.

Christianity is wholly-based on forgiveness for wrongdoings, being charitable, being a good example to others, and evangelizing the Good Word at whatever level of loudness you're comfortable.

Christianity as many people publicly portray it, as is the case with most belief systems, is flawed and lost its real intention.

I've seen her perform over a dozen times and her musical style changed every time.  She's a fantastic performer and always has put on a great show.  I even get her monthly emails listing upcoming shows.  While she's always been different, this time I think she's gone totally nuts.

At a show in Chicago (the Cubby Bear, next to Wrigley) in the 90's she got harassed onstage by gay activists.  They wanted her to come out of the closet (the show was during pride week).  Instead she pointed out that she was getting married or had recently done it.  The gay audience members were really annoying, but Michelle took it in stride and played on.  The show had already been delayed because she'd been in NYC taping the Letterman show and her flight to Chicago got in late.  mid-way through the show the lights dimmed and a giant screen dropped behind the stage.  They played the Letterman segment live and we all got to watch Michelle watch herself on TV.  She was all weepy-eyed and we all thought that this was going to be her break-out moment.

Seems that mental illness has chewed her up something fierce...

2013-03-19 12:33:07 PM
How sad.  She is one of the great unknown indie/folk artists of the era.  Her cover of the great Jean Richie's "The L&M Don't Stop Here Anymore" is amazing.  Some of her original songs are really great too.  She had two pop hits back in the 70's or 80's: "When I Grow Up" and "Anchorage."  The last one had the most airtime, but the first was more representative of her indie/folk sound.  She had a hit when Fog Town (one of her best songs, actually) got picked up by a different indie/folk band and made it into the soundtrack for a movie, and their cover of her song was nominated for an Oscar for best original song.

She had a few semi-successful albums but then sort of faded away.  I basically lost track of her despite her music being at the top of my playlists.

I saw her in San Francisco a few years back at the Swedish-American Hall.  It was a tiny venue, and we were right up in front (on folding chairs- that's how tiny it was).  I took my wife and two kids with me because the kids needed to experience some alternate culture and music.  It was quite the eye opener for them.  She is NOT mainstream three-chord verse-chorus-verse-bridge-verse-chorus-fade vanilla pop.  But she IS a talented musician.

I also thought she was gay, but it's interesting that I've fallen into the "butch=gay" trap despite the fact that I've considered myself fairly enlightened on this subject.  It's always good to have your preconceptions challenged.

I'd almost overlook this because she's whacked out in a lot of ways, and this is probably just another manifestation.  Sometimes I think talent requires a hearty helping of insanity, or something like it.  And the more talent you have the more insanity you're given.  Add conservative religion into the mix, and this is what you get.

2013-03-19 12:41:30 PM
So she's hoping promoters will cancel her future shows so she can go on Fox News and complain she is being repressed? After that there will be a huge facebook campaign by other fundies to go out and buy her album on one day to teach the dirty liberals a lessons. She'll then spend all her time touring in small southern communities with a lot of Born agains. Not a great plan but it will probably work.

People do want some groups silenced because of what they say, and typically it's the liberals that want to shut up conservatives, ala People wanting the Westboro Baptists to be labeled a hate group.

Here's the thing.  When it comes to the point where you hate the other party and want them to shut up, it approaches that barrier.

If people did have the power, LOTS of people would be deprived of their free speech.  The intent is the same, the ability is all that's lacking.

I'm talking about the philosophy that led to the right being recorded as is.  Not saying I don't want people to shut up, or that I'm right to do so, so keep that in mind as you go on.

Now, you take a large group of people who want Person/PartyX to shut up.  Here it's not only approached the barrier, it's stroking it lovingly, debating jumping over the fence and throttling the idiot practicing free speech.

Now, this group, will passive aggressively attempt to shut the guy up, as if trying to pick up that barrier and move it, so that they're within rights. Verbal abuse, drowning the guy out, etc.

That does go against the sentiment behind free speech.  It is a real phenomenon.  It's not "illegal", no but it's there.  It's akin to the whole "i'm not touching you I'm not touching you".  It can also amount to provocation, which in the US and other countries, can validate physical assault upon you.  Some gets in your face long enough and hard enough and you pop them, you might just get away with it.

It's a grey area, this passive aggressive technique.  I find it's striking similar, morally and socially, to someoen who makes false rape cases because they're pissed off for some drama bullshiat.  People that act out and make false claims to get even.  Can have lasting impact on people's lives.

I say grey area, because one begets the other, and often it's so convoluted, you've got to write both parties off as assholes and get on with your day.

Now, that doesn't apply in this thread, mind you, just discussing the philosophy behind it(as much as I hate philosophy, it's got it's apt places).  The singer said X, and left the stage.  No one is barring her from speaking, or even harrassing her that we know of.  All we know is that one business is distancing themselves so as not to sully their own reputation.  All of which is perfectly fine.

douchebag/hater: Lionel Mandrake: I thought she was gay.

Or at least strong bi

Funny but I thought 'Freedom of Speech' is a very liberal idea. I guess not when it's something you don't like.

Freedom of speech is not the issue. The free market is.

douchebag/hater: RedT: In before the "b..b..but the First Amendment" constitutional scholars.

Meaning what exactly?

You hate her for saying this but when Muslim calls for the death of America or gays or the subjugation of women or forcing women to have clitorectomies not...one....word.

And you say 'That's a religion saying that stuff so it's ok' and yet...YET when a Christian comes out with something you consider 'stupid' you have a fit.

You are what is called a 'hypocrite'.

It's NOT a TUMOR.

Oh and p.s. her cover of Johnny Cash's One Piece at a Time is pretty awesome too. I refuse to stop liking her music just because I don't like her views.

theorellior: wraithmare: True! But her concerts certainly attract that crowd. Was one of a handful of men at the show I went to back in the 90s. Good show!

Hah! In 1996 or thereabouts I saw her in Austin at a club called The Back Room. Its nickname was "The Black Doom" because it usually hosted metal, punk, and thrash shows. I'd actually seen Prong and Clutch there myself. Having Suzanne Vega in that venue was pretty weird, but it rocked surprisingly hard. And there were actually other men in the crowd!

I lost a good portion of my hearing there at a Joe Ely show.
Had tinnitus for 3 days.

Let's face it: it's not as though Shocked can't recover from this.

If she starts dating a woman, all will be forgiven.
And if she beats that woman bloody, she'll get a Grammy.

She claimed today she was being ironic or something and the club cut the mic and lights before she could finish the joke.

I continue to believe fervently that anyone who is at all concerned that someone may be having sex in a manner different from some tradition wants to be having sex in a manner different from that same tradition, and can't because they won't let themselves.

I don't care if gay people have NASAL sex, I don't care if lesbians have sex only 8-10 times per year. But if someone tells me gay dudes get 30 blowjobs a year minimum, I'm strangely concerned. Not for them, but concerned that I'm being significantly short-changed by traditional marriage.

You cant say you weren't warned though.

It's one of the oldest jokes out there.

'Why's the bride smiling?... No more blowjobs...'
