Wasn't that Azrael filling in for Batman?  If so, it doesn't really count as a makeover.

I've only read the Knightfall novel, but I got the impression that whoever they cast for a live action Jean Paul Valley would have to be seriously ripped.

That cover art is horrible! Rob Liefeld has a better grasp of anatomy, perspective, and composition than this.

The neck and head are off center, the bottom of the rib cage extends out farther than the (armor encased) pectorals, the shoulders are uneven (an amateur perspective problem, as drawing the arc of the shoulder girdle is counter-intuitive to basic perspective rules--thanks Jack Hamm), the anatomy in general is a mess, and the composition as a whole is messy. Yikes!

Well, "filling in" and not replaced because DC backpedaled after fans HATED what theyd done.

Basically what happened was, in the 90s comic books were getting darker, and the darker characters were selling better. Wolverine was the most popular character of either publisher. Batman was still DCs best selling book, but couldnt hold a candle to Wolverine, and they could only go so dark with Batman since no matter what, Bruce Wayne wouldnt kill. So what if Bruce Wayne wasnt Batman anymore? They brought in a new guy, brand new character, who in the course of only a few issues became Batman, the whole thing was ridiculous. AzBat was basically DCs answer to Wolverine, complete with the blue and yellow costume and claws. It was a stupid idea and they fixed it pretty quick, but it was still one of the worst runs of batman.

The Cataclysm/No Mans Land arc following it was awesome though, they worked some of that into The Dark Knight Rises. And TDKR Bane was way better than his early incarnation in the comics, they fleshed out his backstory quite a bit, but originally he was pretty much just a random new ubermensch ex machina to get Bruce Wayne outa the batsuit.

The arm muscles are the most glaring issue but I still like that costume more than the one above with the abdominals cut out.

Frankencastle was awesome.

Also, the point of all the design elements of the Nu52 stuff is that the lines and Vs and high collars and what all make it easier to digitally create content.

I was working in a comic book store when that came out.  I got those issues just in case they are worth something someday, before I forgot that everyone would do that.  D'oh.  I remember some people who have collections of Star Wars Episode I figures because in 30 years they'll be worth a fortune too.  Only stuff that's scarce on arrival has a chance of appreciating.
