Chevrolet never built the 1954 Corvette Nomad wagon that Harley Earl built for General Motors' Motorama traveling road show, but ever since a few hearty after-market designers have attempted to graft a taller hatch onto the Vette's rear flanks to form a proper two-door shooting brake often with questionable results.

Not bad at all. I've not been that impressed with the looks of the C7, but I *do* like that.

I won't be buying a regular Vette, let alone that body kit, but I do like the look (and the increased utility would also make it a very livable vehicle for long trips).

Shooting brake has always been my favorite style of race car and is what fed my love affair with station wagons. I have already posted pictures of my Brick. I've just always loved the style and the utility so I've owned a bunch of station wagons (not quite the same) throughout my life. One of my favorites was a VW Quantum GL-5. It was a great deal of fun.

I'll try hotlinking this...

carphotos.cardomain.com
It was one of my favorite cars actually. If you get a minute and want to take a look at an oddity that was a work of art then I'd Google it.

Hell, here: Link

It had a 2.2L 5 cylinder Audi engine which was neat. It did a good job and was a lot of fun, comfort, and quirky German engineering. It had power everything and a top end Bose sound system from the factory. It wasn't the fastest car or anything but it was plenty fast and stuck to the road like a hippy in Birkenstocks. Those across the pond would recognize it as an early Passat.

Anyhow, that's one of my favorite wagons. Volvo makes and Saab used to make very good wagons. Some sporty BMWs are available but that's my not so cool station wagon story. I just like the style and they're actually pretty good aerodynamic-wise I understand.

My dad had one of these Nimitz-class Chevy Caprice Classic wagons.

350 engine with some kind of automatic trans.

I don't think there's a limit to how fast these can go on a downhill highway grade at full power.

23FPB23: Ha!  Back on that 140 mph speedometer thread, I posted a pic of our lil gas sipper, 2007 Suzuki Reno.  After some wiki-wiki, I found out the guy that designed it also designed a million other compacts, and also several "supercars" and all kinds of stuff.

We like it.  Its got a touch of that shooting brake look.

Way back when I bought a car from a buddy for $500. It was a Chevy Sprint (dubbed The Poptart). It was some kind of bastard product that had a Suzuki 3 cylinder motor in it. It got 45 miles to the gallon. Drove it for 6 years. Never changed the oil. Never broke down. Put it in the woods a lot. Best car ever! If I ever buy another new car (doubtful). It will be a Suzuki.

Giltric: Nice.

I like how they refer to it as a shooting brake as opposed to a golfing brake as is traditional.

America Fark Yeah!

Can't wait to bless it with my Noveske and Larue stickers.

Maybe a giant BFL in the back window instead.

arfcommer? i thought i was the only one who could tolerate these two political extremes.

On the one hand, I think its a pretty hot mod for the Corvette.

On the other:  I really don't understand the appeal of souped-up station wagons like this or the
Magnum, aside the sheer desire for technological demonstration.

If you want a fast car, get a sports car.

If you want cargo room and comfort, get a wagon or SUV.

/Drives a Toyota Matrix; much prefers cargo room to speed at this point.

phamwaa: 'Course, on my budget I had one of these:

That's an old Chevelle wagon, right? I always liked those. A lot of rod shops seal that back door in and turn them into "Nomad" style cruisers. That's something I can get behind, for sure.

ultraholland: anybody got an '87 Crown Vic wagon for sale? I'm totally in the market.

people will laugh but a few years ago i was looking for a CV wagon. my dad had one when i was kid.  it could hold whole sheets of plywood, got excellent mileage for the size, towed everything, hauled everything, and the 302 V8 must have been one of the most reliable engines ever.

darkone: All of the ugly of the FF with none of the AWD

Seriously why can't we innovate in anything but style and very questionable style
Toyota, BMW, Mazda and Hydundai/KIA all have GDI engines
I know Chevy announced GDI for 2014, but it still has a 2 valve push rod head

You say that as though it is a bad thing. It's both lighter and physically smaller than a much more complicated engine, while making more power. That's bad?

"The result of all this, according to Chevy, is a naturally aspirated engine comparable to some of the top turbo engines on the market. Pulling no punches, Chevy takes aim at BMW. The Bavarians' 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 produces 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque while weighing 503 pounds and standing 29.6 inches high. The new LT1, by contrast, puts down its estimated 450 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque while weighing only 465 pounds and standing just 25.3 inches tall. Advantage Corvette, lighter nose more power to the rear. The extremely compact size, says Lee, allows a low hood line and better visibility."

Mine was a straight-up Impala. 'Course it wasn't so straight after the frame folded.
