I'm so farking dumb to buy the game. I don't know why but it was an impulse purchase. Never again EA! The worst part is that SimCity is dropping in price to $39.99 this weekend

I was absolutely aching to play this game but decided to wait and see after finding out about the always-on internet shenanigans.  As happy as I am with that decision, I'm still disappointed that I likely won't even bother playing game.  Between the small maps and the issue that subby alluded to, there's no reason to get this at all as far as I can tell.  And that makes me a sad panda.

Hell I was looking forward to it too but yeah I've seen the YouTube videos of cities maxed out with 100 residential zoning, and traffic stuck on a dirt road while all the Sims ignore the six lane highway that is only marginally longer. From here, it looks like server issues are the least of this game's issues. Good thing SimCity 4 is still pretty fun.

The entire game appears to be nothing more than a minimum Euclidean distance algorithm writ large.

It seems to be one of those games people love or people hate.  Haven't played it myself.

Played the hell out of the first Sim City.  Never had any interest in playing after that point.

/Same with Civilization after some friends and I spent 24 hours straight playing

You mean making actively bad games and trying to lock down as much as you can so you can continue to make bad games and charge for them (including micro-transactions in every facet of every game) isn't a good business strategy? Who would've thought that? Only pretty much everyone who wasn't EA, that's who.

Wings of liberty was lackluster enough that I can't imagine being interested in any future SC games.

I was actually going to buy Simcity before I saw the Youtube videos of the godawful traffic jams next to empty roads and packs of people going to the first available house/job.  I can get over the always-on DRM and server issues, they suck but they don't make it impossible to enjoy the game.  Being a shiatty game makes it impossible to enjoy the game.

That's a relief.  He shouldn't be blamed for the programmers implementing the DRM improperly.

Sort of. Riccitiello was Pres/COO from 1997-2004 ($7 to $45), came back as CEO in 2007-2013 ($50-$20). I'll give him credit for seeing the need for transformation, but I'd also be first to say the transformation he called for was precisely the wrong one, which is why tonight, despite burying some slightly-lowered guidance into tonight's press release, the stock is still up 2.5% after hours.

"We're an association of electronic artists who share a common goal. We want to fulfill the potential of personal computing. That's a tall order. But with enough imagination and enthusiasm, we think there's a good chance for success. Our products, like this game, are evidence of our intent." The first early warning sign was not, in fact, when the message on the back of the packaging changed from "If you'd like to get involved," to "If you'd like a product brochure," because although that slogan change coincides with an early office move in 83-84, Arctic Fox and Bard's Tale were fun and awesome in 1985, after the slogan switched from recruiting prospective developers to targeting customers.

Can any old-school cube-sphere-pyramid era types who made it even partway through the transition years fill in the gaps? (Even if you can't do so here, scribble some notes for posterity. Gamers of future generations will want to know.)

I tried earlier tonight but trying to reach their support to recover my account that was jacked many months ago has been less then an ideal experience.  ...8 hours and counting, 2nd attempt, they recovered the account but left the hacker's authenticator tied to it so I still can't get in...yay.

Is this where they pretend that the server issues weren't a deliberate attempt to drum up media coverage? ("Look at these long wait times to play the game! Must be popular and cool!")

Well, in a couple years you'll be able to pick up a package that includes all the DLC for a decent price...playable for six months before they disable the servers and release a newer, feature-stripped $80+ iteration.

/I've listened to quite a few EA investor conference calls in the past year or so, and they intend to annualize all of their properties, cram microtransactions up the ass of even single-player games (as they did with Dead Space 3), and push shiatty mobile games by requiring them to unlock content in their non-mobile games. Awesome company.

I absolutely can't fathom why they had to have individual sims with individual cars instead of generalized traffic patterns. Yes, it was a little odd doing a driving mission in Sim City 4 and having the car in front of you disappear, but it was fine... you understood what was going on and it was part of the game. I just... I can't imagine what they were thinking or how it would even benefit the game.

I'm assuming that a year from now the game will be patched for gameplay and patched to be piratable. That's when I plan on playing it.

Where does SimCity rank on the list of all-time single-game PR disasters? I mean, nothing's ever going to top E.T., but this can't be all that far down the ranking.
