Manimal, Automan, Streethawk ... the 80s were full of really cool and really bad sci fi shows. I mean - Condorman?

I've never heard of this one, though.

Manimal was kickass. Well, I was five but still.

I remember this series.  it was cheesy and very 80's but....it had a pretty damn good story line for a kids show designed to sell interactive toys.  as I recall there was some VERY dark stuff in there.

Darn. I was hoping for The Powers of Matthew Star.

/not really

Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future is a legendary show

No, it's really not. At least I remember Manimal.

When I saw the link about "Captain Power" part of my brain went "Oh heck yes! YES!". I literally can't remember a thing about the show (if there was simply a picture of Captain Power on a webpage I couldn't give the name to save my life), but I recognize that outfit and I remember loving this show as a kid.

/Damn you Fark, now I need to go refresh myself on 80's nostalgia because I know I LOVED this show but I think the parts of my memory dedicated to Captain Power were accidentally overwritten by memory now dedicated to understanding the byzantine labyrinth that was the approval pathway for a Canadian government department which I once worked for but no longer exists, so I can very easily put a more useful memory into those pathways.

I have no memory of this show, but that picture looks like a kick-ass Atari 2600 game.

I remember that show. I even suspected it might be the show the headline was referring to.

Either that or Misfits of Science.

I'm surprised no one's tried to revive the "80s super futuristic intelligent vehicle" genre. Airwolf, Street Hawk, Automan, Knight Rider.... it was a great time to believe in artificial intelligence.

There was also this POS in the 90s. I can't believe they squeezed four seasons out of a Chrysler commercial.

Misfits of Science?

Checks TFA.

Dammit, that stupid bad cgi show with the ridiculously expensive toy that was supposed to interact with the show? Bah. Lemme know when Max Headroom, Misfits of Science, Greatest American Hero, or the Fall Guy makes a comeback.

Yeah, they made KITT a farking Mustang that could transform into an SUV or some shiat.  One of my coworkers also told me it could transform into a different kind of Mustang, but I'm not sure if he was just messing with me or not.

"Captain Power?" I laughed to myself, knowing that they'd never do that.  And it was Captain Power, and now I have a nostalgia hemorrhage.

Airwolf was an attack chopper, no artificial intelligence involved.

Street Hawk was just an internet connect bike.

Automan and Knight Rider were true AIs.

Hell yeah!  Actually, I think there were a couple of different ones (that could also be used to shoot at each other), plus a 'base' of some kind or another, and probably stuff I'm forgetting.

Captain Power is interesting to me.

I do remember the show. I remember watching a lot of it. I even remember having some of the merchandise. And I remember the over-arching narrative/plot. But I can't for the life of me recall a single episode.

It's like I remember it and don't remember any of it at the same time.

Wow, I just had to forward this link to a bunch of former co-workers.  You see, our company invented the "interactive" technology this show was based on, and we did the CGI, effects, and post-production.  Took out patents for the technology and everything.  I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't get a mention.

I had stumbled on the 1st episode of Captain Power last weekend.

It hasn't aged well, but the concepts were kind of cool.
As a kid I thought that bird/gargoyle robot was pretty nifty. That whole show proved that the bad guys made for the best toys.

Says Lay, "We felt the original [show] didn't really have an origin story. It just kicks in with Captain Power, and you don't know who he is." There's nothing to explain who this guy is, and why he's a hero.

And this is why this will blow.
I don't need an origin story.  If something happens later that I should know, flashback.  Otherwise you're just wasting my time.

You meet people every day.  Do you know all of their "origin stories"?  No, you accept who they are and move on.  If you spend enough time with them, you learn more about them and their past.  That is the right way to write shows and novels.

I had the bad guy's ship, but I rarely found friends who had any of the good guys' ships so we could duel. I did interact with the TV show, but it was difficult to understand the rules of how you scored points. (The VHS cassettes designed for the toys were much better at this. They had the cheesiest of CGI)

The show itself was quite mature for the kiddie set it was designed for (if memory serves, it was the follow-up to the equally over-our-heads Photon live action show), but I doubt it'd appeal to modern audiences very well. The comic bookish characters were pretty two-dimensional and the same dystopian future concept has been done better in the Terminator films.
