Just read that since the story ran in the NY Post this morning, this asshole has resigned his EMT job and given up his hope of being a fireman

This should have a follow-up tag as the article pointing to the tweets hit green.

Even after living in the South for two decades, I've never come across the unique kind of racism that permeates NY and NJ.  It's super obnoxious, out and open, and usually based on cartoonish assumptions about minorities.  Southern racism is far more insidious and pervasive, but it has an an almost genteel aspect to it.  It isn't "in your face" as much as it's just expected that everyone agrees with you.

The only time in the past ten years I've heard a white guy call a black guy a n****r to his face was at a gas station in New Jersey, and it was because the black guy messed up giving change to a customer.  Then both employees laughed about it and went on like nothing odd had happened.  Even in Richmond, VA that shiat doesn't fly.  In Richmond, the white guy would quietly lean over into my car and say "stupid n****r doesn't know how to make change."

I can't say either situation is better or worse, but it's certainly different.

That's ridiculous, only the ones with small tits should.

2013-03-18 10:35:18 PM
In other tweets, he used a derogatory slang term for black people, threatened to leave the U.S. if President Obama was re-elected and made a snide crack about Martin Luther King Jr.

Why do stupid people keep threatening to leave the U.S.?  For fark's sake - GO!  Seriously!

Also - why is insulting MLK so much worse than insulting 50% of the populace?

Well, I assume it's because it's socially okay to treat women like shiat, but it's not okay to be a racist, but I was hoping for better.

Getting sick of picking up all these obama lovers and taking them to the hospital because their medicare pays for an ambulance and not a cab.

Obama backers remark aside this is a fairly common complaint from EMS workers that I know.  That and the surge in calls on mothers day and xmas when people finally visit mama after they have gotten rid of her by placing into an assisted living facility and are shocked that she is on the downhill slide.

FTFAHis father, Commissioner Salvatore Cassano, said he was "extremely disappointed" by his son's online comments and that they did not reflect his values.

I'm not sure whether the Commissioner is defending his own values or his son's in that statement...but, considering how often people's values come from their parents, I'm calling bullshiat in either case.

This has not been my experience. NY/NJ has more diversification than many areas and I've found people to be very tolerant and kind. I thought people in the NY/NJ/CT area were noted for their courtesy and respect for each other, as well as being helpful to strangers and tourists. Go figure! But folks down South are really sweet and easy to talk to, I'd love to move there.

Idiot.

Now, having said that, my brother (who was raised by the same parents) can be very offensive to anyone who is not white.  He did not learn that from dad or mom.  I'm not sure where it came from.  I've seen it numerous times and sometimes it comes from the parents and sometimes I think it's just something in them that feels cheated by someone or some social group.

So the guy that threatened to leave the USA when Obama was elected has to quit his union job.  For the same reasons he shames his father, a prominent public sector worker.

Ablejack: So the guy that threatened to leave the USA when Obama was elected has to quit his union job.  For the same reasons he shames his father, a prominent public sector worker.

People tend to be self centered idiots, but still:  I voted for Obama because I agreed with him 45% of the time.  Why would I vote for somebody I agree with less than half the time?  Romney scored a 40%.  Also, he might not be a single issue voter - he could have been with Obama on union stuff, but against him or for Romney on sufficient other grounds to support that.  It's complicated.

Also, I remember democrats 'promising' to leave the country if Bush was re-elected, so it's not exactly a new scenario.  I also love how picturing Bush as a monkey was 'scathing political commentary', but dare do the same with Obama and you're suddenly a horrible racist.

That doesn't mean this jackape wasn't a racist bastard, of course.  Can be hard to tell the difference sometimes.

What a dope. He had a job through clear nepotism, and then tweets embarrassing, bigoted crap thinking, what? That he was untouchable because his dad is a bureaucratic big-shot? Or is it that such sentiments are so common amongst his friends and family that it never occurred to the sap that he was being offensive and dumb? You gotta wonder how long his dad is going to be keeping his job.

You really don't even need to dissect this to get the absolute core of the "traditional American values" that drive the right wing in this country.

Blacks and whites in the South lived together in the same communities for centuries. Certain understandings had to evolve in order to keep society at a functional level.

The Northeast had relatively few blacks and no integration for the longest time, then by the 1940s and 50s millions of blacks and Hispanics migrated to a region that had limited social protocol for such race relations. Also, it doesn't help that many of the Northeast's residents are ethnic whites that were victims of ethnic prejudice themselves for decades (Italians, Irish, Greeks, Jews, Poles etc.) The abused give back what they were taught and become the abusers. Even today in NYC I routinely witness Asians being targeted with racial prejudice by blacks.
