...David Irving, who mentioned the younger brother as an aside, with no appraisal of his merits as a rescuer of those persecuted by the Nazis.

No shiat.  I'm surprised Irving even acknowledged his existence.

I don't see what the problem is. Israel certainly pays a lot of attention to who your family is when deciding whether or not you can become a citizen. Is this different because it's a brother rather than a mother?

Well according to Irving, the brother was saving people from something that was a lie anyway.

Did you ever hear the philosophy that once a man admits he's wrong, he's immediately forgiven for all wrong-doings?

There are all sort of odd tales like this. Hitler had a nephew that emigrated to the US and did War Bonds tours speaking about his Uncle, and while Al Capone was the biggest man in Chicago, he had a brother in Nebraska who was a Sheriff who busted bootleggers left and right.

But that's different.

Al Capone's brother busting OTHER bootleggers is common interest.

Raoul Wallenberg != chopped liver. Especially since the Red Army branded him a spy when they got to Budapest and threw him in the joint, never to be seen again. There were two kinds of people the Ruskies had no use for - Nazis and anti-Nazis.

Wagner's music is still controversial there. People going to the opera in Israel don't have to sit through any of the Ring Cycle. Lucky bastards...

Lots of Jewish people have no problem with Wagner - his music wasn't antisemitic.

How does she feel about Meyerbeer?

Goering is correct. Göring would be equivalent, but not typically how he spelled his name. Göering would just be wrong - it would be equivalent to Goeering. Fatass would also be acceptable.

Patrick HItler. Strangely enough, he did name one of his sons after his uncle despite the not so good reputation of the name after the war. None of his kids ever had children and there were rumors that they made a pact never to have children.

What's interesting about this story is that the cousin took shameless advantage of his family relations to sneak people out of the country: When he did get caught or challenged, he'd just say "You know my cousin, Reichmarshall Goering? Let me just call him for you..." and the border guards would click their heels and let him through. Kind of like when you say you have a brother who works on the police department, only in this case it really worked.

One of the good things that Hermann Göring did was to protect Allied bomber crews from retaliation from the German people who wanted very badly to kill them for bombing their cities and towns to rubble. Goring had been a fighter pilot ace in WWI who had earned the coveted Blue Max, and considered all flyers to be "knights of the sky" and worthy of protection from the pedestrian rabble. The downed Allied crews would be beaten and have rocks thrown at them, but they were kept alive because Hermann Goring would hang anyone who killed an Allied airman.

I think she doesn't mind his music, but she considers him an apostate for being born Jewish and then converting. However her stance may have changed, as she told me this maybe a decade ago.
