More math Republicans do to make themselves feel better?

2013-03-18 07:06:06 PM
So basically, Jeff Sessions is mad that the Democrats counted spending cuts that already went into effect into their budget.  Is the budget for the same period of time?  Did a group of people from both sides of the aisle agree to the sequester in 2011?  Yes and yes.  Then STFU, Jeff.

Still better than the Republican budgets, which count trickle-down revenues which have never existed at all.

It called for the repeal of PARTS of Obamacare because the whole thing "kills jobs," while leaving in place the part that he claimed "kills jobs."

Because fark you, that's why.

Regardless if it is 700B or 1.8T over 10 years, it is peanuts to the issues we face.  Get it up to about 4T or higher in a decade and we may just begin to get somewhere.

Heck, just shut down everything until we have the debt paid off.

I heard Bohner today say that balancing the budget would create jobs. I'd love to hear someone explain how that works.

Smackledorfer: Heck, just shut down everything until we have the debt paid off.

?  No need to pay the debt off.  Just need to get our debt and deficits down to sustainable levels.  Cutting the deficit by 400B/year is a long way from shutting everything down.  Remember, our annual spending is about $3.5T/year ($35 Trillion over the same decade, not including the time/value adjustments)

Well I refuse to read any of their articles, so there's that.  If the article says "Sessions is challenging the budget because he claims it counts cuts twice." then it's OK.  If the article says "Sessions is challenging the budget.  It counts cuts twice." then that's bullshiat.  So yeah, I'm assuming it's the latter.

Am I wrong?

fusillade762: I heard Bohner today say that balancing the budget would create jobs

Over the long term, it likely would.  When you have continuing massive deficits and a run up on the debt, it takes more and more federal revenue to be diverted into the interest payment.  This would take away the governments ability to spend on things that do contribute to society as a whole.

GOP BUDGET CALLS FOR ALL LEFT-HANDED RED-HEADED ASIANS TO BE RITUALLY SACRIFICED TO CTHULU!!

Now can someone please post an 'article' saying 'Some people are accusing the GOP Budget of calling for the ritual sacrifice of minorities'? It would be just as accurate as the POS link, and actually amusing to boot.

The article is technically accurate, in the worst way possible. The Democrat budget is replacing the 700 billion dollar sequester with 1.4T in cuts. The Republicans are saying that means the Democrats are only cutting 700 billion (1.4T-700B), and that the Republican plan is claiming 4T on top of the sequester.

It has to be if we are going to get our deficit in order.  SS is the second largest spending program and is not viable in the current form.  nNt sure what is so radical about trying to get SS fixed.

But you have to count budget cuts twice, in order to correct for all the double-taxation that occurs on investment income.

I do, but Jimmy Carter was in the Oval Office at the time. It didn't become a "BIG DEAL" until after Saint Reagan, when defense spending not only became immense, but institutionalized.

There's nothing wrong with trying to fix SS, especially since it's not that broken, and it won't take a huge amount of money to fix it if we act soon, and a fix that would be acceptable to 70% of Americans is simple -- lift the cap on SS withholding. The Chained CPI crap is just a slower, more subtle way to reduce benefits. I hope the Democrats will stand up to Obama on this one and not go along with Chained CPI.

However, calling that a budget fixing priority is misleading, because it's not part of the budget. It's an entirely separate program.

Of course, overall, having a balanced budget is good.  I don't think anyone would argue that if we could have a balanced budget without cutting spending and raising taxes so much that it drives us into a double dip recession that it would fantastic.  But that's not the case, and that is what so many people fail to understand.  You can't be so quick to cut spending b/c our economy is improving.  I think that is what the republicans are failing to understand (Among so many other things).
