B's gotta get back on track, here.  Back-to-back again?  Lovely.

My mistake.

I really hope the Hawks give the Avs the Stars treatment tonight.

Glad to see the Habs be consistent at fourth. The only toss up for them if you could challenge was 3rd vs 4th, but their loss to Pittsburgh a couple weeks ago, and them being hotter gave them the push. I am just glad to see the B's down just a little.

Wings need to keep up the good work if they want to make the playoffs; currently at 33 points, last team in is San Jose with 30 points.  Hell, the Western Conference standings are incredibly tight right now, if you look at #3 through #9 there's only a range of 4 points.

2013-03-18 01:41:52 PM
I'm just hoping the Pens aren't peaking too soon...the win streak is fun, but I'd rather have it in the playoffs.  Also hoping Letang and Malkin are back in soon.

/Philly still sucks ;)

You want the Hawks to make the Avs wear mooterus jerseys?  I like the way you think, the Avs can't suffer enough.

3 games in 4 days + 2 games in less than 24 hours + an epic 10 round shootout = one gassed Jets squad and an easy win for the Sens.
Still, it would be pretty cool if the Jets could hoist a Southeast division champs banner this year.

/at least they beat the Leafs!

ten foiled hats: B's gotta get back on track, here.  Back-to-back again?  Lovely.

Ther's just nothing about Claude Julien's scheme that lends itself to a grinding schedule.  Tired legs from here on out.  Once the dust settles, I'll take a 3 or 4 seed and hope they don't have too many back to back nights in the playoffs.

I too want the Jets to win, for no other reason than the ridiculousness of Winnipeg being considered Southeast of anything.

Copy and pasting in case the other thread gets nuked:

Rose to #19, on a hot streak (though they blew a 3 goal lead to Florida in a game they won anyway), 2 points out of the last spot, potential dogfight with the Rags looming... can the Isles actually pull this off?

I am hoping for another 8-1 shellacking, but if they want to wear female genitalia on their sweaters, I'm fine with that too.

2013-03-18 02:10:15 PM
Glad to see the Hawks get back on track. The streak was fun while it lasted, at least... but there's still a flock of Ducks looming large in the rearview mirror. Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets have been on a tear lately, with a ten-game point streak... nice to see them climb out of the hole, even if they're heading east next year.

Nice to see the Wings take care of the Canucks, too!

cettin: I too want the Jets to win, for no other reason than the ridiculousness of Winnipeg being considered Southeast of anything.

That would be major lulz. It'd be interesting to see what sort of reaction (if any) there would be in Atlanta.

?

F-it, I'm bringing this comment over here as I expect the other thread to go away:

B's fans (me included) have to be a little concerned about the 2 Pens games.  Not so much yesterday as the game they gave away last week, but still, hope the Bruins don't meet them in the ECF (if they get to it.)

Think there is one more regular season match up, Bruins need to win that one

Here's my alternate standings setups through yesterday's games

Some notes:

I've added a column named "Playoff." This lists the number of points needed to almost guarantee a playoff spot, based on the average point total of the #8 seed in each conference each year we've had the shootout projected onto the 48 game season. Because of some consistency in each conference, the numbers in each conference are different: the West is 2 points higher than the East (55 to 53). The number was rounded down from what the math came up with in each case just to be on the conservative side. That will more likely affect the East as that result was much closer to 54 than it was to 53.

Playoff teams across the systems:
International rules- 15 of the 16 current playoff teams are still in, swap Phoenix and San Jose
My revised system- 15 of 16 with Phoenix going in but SJ drop to 12th
Old NHL (pre-OTL)- see previous line

Why does San Jose drop so much in systems that penalize going to shootouts? They've had 10 games go to OT and 7 of them have gone to shootouts, where they're 4-3. The 3 non-SO games? All losses. In my system and the old NHL system, that's a straight up loss and no points.

In fact, the only team with a worse OT record than the Sharks is Florida at 0-5.

Am I saying that the Sharks are a bit of a fraud? Yes. Yes I am. They've used the shootout to build their point total and without it, they're junk.

Meanwhile, Calgary goes from 14th in the West in the real life standings to 10th on international rules to 9th in my system and the old NHL rules. That's partly because in my system, they're in a 3 way tie for 9th and have it on games played. But that's also because they've only had 5 OT/SO games (only LA has fewer in the West with 3) so fewer opportunities to lose points while winning.

It should be said that they do have the worst SO record in the league at 0-3.

And Carolina and Washington still have zero shootouts for the year.

Not sure how with a better past 10 record the Ducks didn't manage #1 this week.  Maybe next week depending how the Hawks game goes.  Sure the Hawks are having a season for the ages, but regulation losses to colorado and the oilers while Anaheim goes 7-0-3 their last 10 with only one regulation loss in almost 7 weeks?

I'm guessing it's because of how the Hawks carpet bombed Dallas. But you're right, the upcoming game between Anaheim and Chicago should be pretty interesting.

Imported from the nuked thread:

Fubegra:Swoop1809: The Blue Jackets at #17 is still amazing to me. Bobrovsky is playing out of his mind and the defense has been spectacular. It is actually fun and exciting going to Jackets games right now because you can expect them to be in the game and have a chance to win, unlike last year when you went just to have a night out downtown and expected them to get beat down.

What's scary is that (at least for the time being) every team in the West is at least within striking distance of a playoff spot. Only the Hawks and Ducks have somewhat comfortable leads.

Right now in the West the team with the most points that is not the Hawks or the Ducks is St. Louis with 34 points.  San Jose is the last team into the playoffs with 30 points.  The Avs are dead last in the conference and they're only 6 points behind San Jose with 24 points.

SultanofSchwing: but regulation losses to colorado and the oilers

I chalk those losses up more to the Hawks being drained after a grueling 7 games in 11 days stretch. Tired team going to the thin air of Denver and losing is no big surprise. And they did nearly dig themselves out of that 4 goal hole against Edmonton.

From the other thread.

Everyone's comments about the Iginla trade are totally correct. His best days are behind him and the Flames may indeed ask too great a price.

However, I think it will happen for two reasons.

1. He's never been in a better position as a rental.

The last year of his deal, if he goes to a team where he doesn't have to shoulder the load, he could probably excel.

2. His desire for a Cup will win out.

And I don't fault him one bit. As a Flames fan, we owe it to him to give him what he wants. If he wants to leave and get that Cup he deserves, I wouldn't hold it against him for a second, though I would shed tears to see him in any uniform other than the flaming C.

2013-03-18 03:15:55 PM
Pretty much.

Maybe he'll go to the Kings for the repeat with Darryl.

Now if only Feaster can pull the trigger, and hit the right target too.

So.... Boston? Not that they need anyone, but it's always nice to be deep. They could bond over Canuck hatred (although, really, is Jarome really capable of hate? Look at those cheekbones...)
Montreal could be fun, too.
Not sure what the asking price is now that it's strictly a Cup-run rental. Maybe a non-blue-chipper and 2nd rounder?

I won't lie, I would LOVE to see Iginla in a Penguins uniform (and to get him that Cup he rightly deserves), but he will always be a Flame, that's for sure.

Still can't get he image of Kaner's spin-o-rama against Dallas Saturday night...sick goal was sick.

While the Hawks are looking for a 3rd or 4th line center, Iginla should come on down to Sweet Home Chicago if he'd like to win a cup.

Can't imagine the destruction the Pens will do if he winds up in Pittsburgh.

That's the trade I'm hoping to see. The Pens are contenders, for sure, and unlike a lot of the rest of Fark's retard hockey brigade, I love Crosby.

It could be the 2010 Olympics all over again.

Plus, everyone in Calgary would become a Pens fan overnight.

this, about the rangers, cept 3 out of 4 games it's 40-50 minutes of physical comedy and ten minutes of decent play.

when they're on, they're VERY good. when everything clicks together those guys look like tanks charging across a meadow of daffodils and fluffy bunnies.

why does it not click? are the stars not aligned? do they need to turn the locker room into a callahan-tortorella thunderdome? would someone PLEASE page Brad Richards to let him know that the season is underway and could he please report to the game??

/srsly, when they click they soar across the ice like the other team isn't there and smoke shots in that you swear had to pass THROUGH the goalie to score.

Oh please, The Blues are one of the best teams in the NHL. The only reason they dropped so many games is Halack and Elliot played like the #2 net minders that they are. Hopefully Allen has finally stabilized the goalie problem the Blues had.

gas giant: WTF was up with that Grigo maneuver? Now would be the perfect time to give the kid more time on a real line.

Was wondering the same thing. Seems odd to keep  him up so long just to send back. Have the rules on juniors changed, or did the Sabres not just eat a year of his contract? Regardless, this season seems like the perfect excuse to just let him develop the hard way. Worst he can do is make a few mistakes and maybe move Buffalo up a spot in the draft.
