1.  Hand your bracket to someone that doesn't watch college basketball closely and either (a) picks randomly or (b) based on how much they like the team mascot or colors.

Done in one.

I let my wife fill it out every year, and let people think I give a shiat about basketball while I take their money.

These play-in (first round) games are troublesome to me. For example, I believe MTSU would beat Memphis, but I do not believe that St. Mary's would. So I guess I just gotta wait to see who wins.

I dunno.  Buzzfeed kinda sucks and this is kind of a massive NCAAT cliche subject.  But then Fark doesn't have much basketball coverage in general, sooooo...

No, I won't read it.

I'm fairly certain no team seeded 14 or lower will win the Tournament this year. Other than that, I have no clue how this thing will play out.

And that's awesome.

I actually just looked back over the one bracket I've made so far.  My East is completely free of upsets, but I have VCU and Memphis from the Midwest and South.

2013-03-18 10:29:47 AM
Here are some of my first thought impressions:

- Oregon got screwed and everyone is screaming about it, so of course they'll lose by 12 to the Pokes
- OK NCAA SELECTION COMMITTEE, WE GET IT, ROY WILLIAMS USED TO COACH AT KANSAS!
- I could see the A10 flopping a bit this year. VCU, Saint Louis, Temple, and Butler all have first or (potential) second round matchups against quality major conference schools. A10 plays good ball, but a lot of people are going to be riding these teams into the Sweet 16 and beyond based on previous years, just feels like maybe there's a regression coming.
- Is there anyone that won't be picking Miami out of the East? I'm sure they think that Indiana has their 1 seed.
- Ole Miss, Sweet 16. Book it. Done.

jayhawk88: OK NCAA SELECTION COMMITTEE, WE GET IT, ROY WILLIAMS USED TO COACH AT KANSAS!

Most predictable potential 2nd round matchup ever.

I only have one thought, and it has to do with the games in Philly.  As if that city isn't bad enough, it'll be full of Duke and Georgetown fans this weekend.  Yuck.

Memphis' two best wins are Harvard at home and staying within 10 of Louisville. Just sayin'.

my final four is Georgetown, Marquette, Gozanga, and St Mary's because I figure a new jesuit pope ought to count for something.

The only rules are there are no rules!

My CSU Rams have there best season in years and get the eventual champions in the second round.  Boo that.  The whole Midwest region is pretty ridiculous.  Whoever filled that out and thought it was somewhat balanced are dicks.

Don't get the Miami love. Everybody and their dog is picking them in the East and they really haven't been that great for a while.  Only a horrible ACC conference has made them look competent.  Can someone explain?

Louisville, Florida, Gonzaga, Miami are my Final Four, with Louisville winning it all.

I don't get it either. Butler, Marquette and Illinois are all capable of taking them out by the Sweet Sixteen or earlier. If they survive that, they'll likely get Indiana, which I'm thinking is who's going to take the East.

I'd still have them losing to Indiana.

So more programs can put "NCAA Tournament berth" on the cover of next year's media guide.

Say what you will, but it has cut down on a MASSIVE amount of sniveling by fans of bubble teams. I don't know why it works so well, but it has. And that fact alone makes calling the opening Thursday games "Round 2" worth it.

2013-03-18 02:30:34 PM
The best bracket I've ever filled out was done the Friday before Selection Sunday. I read an article like the one here about 11 and 13 seeds being rarer upsets than 12 seeds, but more likely to advance when they do win, how often 1, 2 and 3 seeds make the FF/win it all, etc. I then printed out a blank bracket and made my selection. I used it as one of my entries in ESPN's contest and finished in the 98th percentile. Luckily, my "real" bracket that year was good enough to win the pool that I enter each year, so I didn't have to

Recent attempts to replicate this success have resulted in abject failure, however, so YMMV.

8.  Don't pick a seven or above seed from a major conference.
9.  Don't bet against Tom Izzo.

Call me old fashioned, but if a team wants to be one of the 64 who make it into the tournament, play harder during the regular season.

Why not expand the tournament to 128 teams so everyone can feel good about their program?

If they'd done that, we wouldn't be privy to Seth Greenberg's trenchant insights on ESPN.

WhiskeySticks: Call me old fashioned, but if a team wants to be one of the 64 who make it into the tournament, play harder during the regular season.

Except that's not how it works. The play-in system is weird because it's not the bottom ranked teams who have to play the extra game. It's usually the teams at the edge of who got at-large bids, and some of the worst of the conference champions from the Greater Arkansas Backwoods Conferences and the Hills Have Eyes Leagues of Division I.

Thus, my team (Saint Mary's) is playing in the first round as an 11-seed, despite being better in terms of initial seeding than about 20 or so other teams. I guess they could have "played harder", but they already played harder than quite a few other teams that are safely in. Better advice for your purposes would be to "play in a shiatty podunk conference and win a conference tournament against Amish Homeschool University".

Personally, I think the play-in games should be between teams 60-68 on the S-curve, but then I'm an egregious homer on this issue. At least this year.

2 points:

#1 The lowest four ranked teams do play in.

#2 The S-Curve is no longer used.

What I don't get is how a play-in team can be any higher than 16 seed.

It's doubtful that I'll put Wyoming in the Sweet Sixteen as the article suggests.

Wait, what's that you say?

Oh, well it looks like I need to pay more attention. It turns out that Wyoming is already in the Sweet Sixteen.
