Yes, that's a Big Gulp. Palin was making a jab at New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg's proposed ban on big sugary sodas, which was struck down in court this week. "Bloomberg's not around," Palin said. "Don't worry." And the crowd went wild.

Because Bloomberg is the mayor of New York City, and your speech was in the state of Maryland.

Bloomberg is a heckuva strawman for the CPAC crowd. I don't know a single liberal who embraces Bloomberg. I've never heard one say, "Hey, you know who I wish could be president in 2016? That guy!" Yet, these CPAC people act like they're making some major dig at liberals by attacking him.

I always enjoy reading CL and Backpage ads during CPAC. There's a lot of 50+ white men "looking for a dominant black male" for a casual encounter.

Bloomberg is a Republican turned independent. They pile on him because he strayed from the party of guns and soft drinks.

He was a Democrat before he was a Republican. He switched parties just before he ran for NYC mayor in 2001. It was probably more opportunistic than anything. During his second term, he became an Independent.

Not to mention Bloomie has a huge pile of cash and he has already proven he will fund candidates who support his regulation mindset. I think he won 4 of 5 in the last election.

He definitely takes a pro-business approach, which seems to work out ok for NYC. But he seems very liberal with social issues.

I mean outside of the soda thing, I can't see anything wrong with Bloomberg.

I don't think Sarah Palin holds any beliefs higher than her own self-interest.  She may fool herself into believing she is not a charlatan, but basically she makes a living off of telling right-wingers whatever they want to hear using non-challenging language with no thought behind it.

And I expect her own mental image of the "middle class" (if she even thinks about it enough to form a mental image) does not represent the actual middle class, but is closer to "couple making $300k a year, living in a half-million dollar home and sending their kids to private school".  In other words, people doing far better than America's actual, vanishing middle class.

Both. Like any low-level conman she isn't very smart but she's picked up enough tricks to grift people that also aren't very smart or are smart but want to believe. In this case, she doesn't really know why BSABSVR is compelling to her audience she just knows it's something she can use to manipulate them.

FTFA: Tea party activists have complained that after logging in to or making donations on TheTeaParty.net or related sites, they found themselves besieged with spam from precious metal dealers who'd been renting the group's email list through Newsmax. The group has repeatedly come under fire for raising lots of money from tea party groups but failing to spend much of it on politics, and has run afoul of the FEC. During the presidential campaign, it raised $1.2 million but spent only $52,000 on candidates. Much of its money gets spent on advertising, including many TV ads that run with a variety of different tea party names on gun and hunting shows. The Tea Party News Network sent out fundraising emails asking for donations to cover the $75,000 CPAC wireless bill.

I am shocked -- SHOCKED! -- to find that sleazy dealings are going on here!

From the "This Is What Conservatives At CPAC Actually Believe" Department...

"Do you actually recognize that most TV shows are actually more conservative? Do you guys watch Modern Family? OK. Have you not noticed that it's actually a very conservative TV show? Um, for instance: they do have, like, the gay couple. But the gay couple are married. And they have a kid. Which is a very conservative thing. They are pro-family, the whole thing is about family. The family structure, which is a very conservative value."

And THAT'S why they're for gay marriage. Wait, what? They're vehemently opposed to any thought of it, and they have the highest rates of divorce in the Bible Belt states? The Dickens, you say!

I was thinking that. A bad salesman wouldn't have convinced so many people. What he was selling, the conservative American dream... now that's a whole other can of worms. But if you're saying that Obama's skills politically are on a par with Madoff's skills at selling junk as gold, you're not very good at insults. It's on a par with Napoleon Dynamite's

"We can't just ignore, though, that we just lost a big election. Yeah. Came in second. Out of two ... Second position on a dog sled team is where the view never changes and the view ain't pretty."

I honestly have no idea what she's trying to say here.

"If these experts keep losing elections, keep raking in millions, if they feel that strongly about who should run in this party they should buck up and run or stay in the truck. The architects can head on back to the Lone Star State and put their name on the ballot."

The lack of self-awareness necessary for her to say this is astonishing. Since losing bad in 2008, has she done anything other than get millions of dollars while telling the GOP what to do?
