mekki: Gulper Eel: Isn't the Devil supposed to appear with a pleasing countenance? I'm thinking more like Elizabeth Hurley in "Bedazzled".

Satan is ugly. He is a demon. Lucifer, on the other hand, is the pretty boy being a Fallen Angel and all. Back during Biblical times, they were two separate beings. (The trinity was Satan. Lucifer and Beezlebub. They controlled Hell with a legion of General and Captain Fallen Angels and demons under them. How they got jumbled up, I forget. Maybe some monks were tired of writing everything in long hand and just bunched them up to save time and wrists.)

Also, in this same miniseries they also have black and Asian angels, as well as a black Samson. But I don't see anyone pointing that out as well.

I don't know why, but I read this in the same tone as the conspiracy scene from Black Dynamite

arethereanybeernamesleft: Speaker2Animals: Care to answer the other question posed to you, professor? Any "real" evidence of his existence as religions portray him? Difficulty: bible =/= real.

Ahhhh, the common Christopher Hitchens fan.

Look--betting on or challenging someone to 'prove' the existence of God is a sucker's bet.  They can't do it.  You know they can't.  I know they can't.  If they're being honest, they know they can't.  But scornful disdain for a person's faith, such as that you're exhibiting, makes you a shiatty person, not them.  I'll never understand why anyone thinks Hitchens was smart.  Arguing about evidence where there is none is the most simple-minded schtick there is.  At least he made money off of it, his followers are just dolts.

Here's the thing--faith doesn't require proof.  Hell, not even scientific theory has been proven.  Once it is, we call it a law.  The law of gravity is a law because it has been proven.  The theory of relativity is still not proven, so it's still a theory.   Leave proof of God to theologians, and proof of relativity to physicists.  But don't be surprised when someone believes in something that can't be proven.

Get over yourself.

Unfortunately for you, it's easy to prove your posts are crap. Just look at all of the evidence you leave lying about...

I was watching for a while.  Moses started out looking spray tanned to look kind of the part of an Israelite.  Then he looked like a European guy with a dirty face when he decided to go back to set the people free after his bush hallucination.

He is kinda scary looking.

Maybe the question is why does Obama look like someone who looks like death?

I_C_Weener: Does black Samson look like The Rock?  Cuz that would be pretty cool.  And prove this was a Disney production.

That was in the previous week's episode.  He was really dark, very large with long dreds.  No one complained.  I really don't care, but they waited till the Obama comparison to say anything.

Nabb1: gilgigamesh: Nabb1: All valid points. At least the Bible, whether you believe or not, has historical significance as a book, and the stories it tells have significance beyond whether they are true or not by the sheer influence the had on shaping western civilization.

History and Discovery would occasionally run Bible documentaries back in the day. I would watch those.

I love that kind of stuff, even though I'm not very religious.  I'm not so much into the dramatizations like this, but anything archaeological - Oh, yeah.

Nabb1: section

The nosebleeds, section 640. I actually like it because I am not the brightest guy when it comes to football, and my seats are right on the 50 so I can see everything that's happening.

The times I have watched games from the loge I couldn't tell what the hell was going on.

When I first started going with my father-in-law, it took some getting used to, but being able to see the offense from that angle is pretty cool - watching the holes open an close, getting the QB's perspective on play development.  The only thing I don't like is that we can't see the back of the end zone beneath us.  Oh, and the prices.  I get so pissed off about paying full season price for pre-season tickets.  Other than those two things, our seats are pretty cool.

Oh I've been meaning to tell you: Chicken and Watermelon is, in fact, real buffalo wings. They weren't terrific, the place is, naturally, an utter shiathole, but they are the real deal. The funny thing is they've started advertising on the local evening drivetime show on the Rush Limbaugh network. the host even does a jingle for them.

Satan is also an angel, and one of the Firstborn. He is a rather handsom fellow, and rules the Southern Regency. Beelzebub assists him as much as he can even though (after the Third Wave) he is trapped in the frm of a Golden Retriever. Lucifer rules the Eastern regency with his consort Lilith.

They nail Jesus to a cross.  He comes back 3 days later.  Peter is tasked to take up his church after he ascends to Heaven.

More apostles write books after he leaves.  Then someone comes around and spoils the fun with Armageddon.

Wow ... so much wrong in so little space. That takes talent.

You call the poster a "shiatty person" because he shows disdain for the religious. Isn't this name calling showing disdain for this poster? Does that make you a hypocrite?

You make assumptions that everyone agrees that there is no evidence for god(s) and therefore it shouldn't be argued. You must be new here to Fark ... the religious argue that there is evidence every day. If you agree that there is no evidence then help us explain it to them or sit back and let the adults talk.

The "Law of Gravity" is a mathematical law which deals with the magnitude of the force of attraction between two objects based on their masses and the distance between them. It is not a law from the physics point of view. Math deals in absolutes ... science does not. There are different theories on how gravity actually works ... the science is not well understood and is most certainly not "a law".

Scientific theories generally are not converted to laws ... it is not some graduated process. They tend to gain or lose support as evidence is gathered. Some have so much evidence that every remotely intelligent person accepts them to be true but they don't change state to 'law'.

aspAddict: Hmm, two non-pale males...that's about the only resemblance.

Obama has a pointy chin, this actor has a square chin.
The actor's nose is turned up significantly more than Obama's.
Obama has smoother, younger looking features - no deep lines in his face.
Kind of hard to tell, but it looks like the actor's ears are significantly droopier than Obama's.
It also appears that he actor has a thicker neck than Obama.

So yeah, enough discrepancies for me to say that the actor doesn't resemble Obama as much as some people would like.

Manufactured outrage is manufactured.

Fact: Human beings have a built in need to feel and express outrage.
Difficulty: We live in the safest, most affluent, softest world than humans have ever inhabited, and literally have nothing of any substance to complain about.

Dude, if it wasn't for manufactured outrage, we wouldn't have no outrage at all. WE should not disparage the critical service that all the hard-working men and women in the outrage industry provide for us.
For if there is any one thing that unites us all - men, women, black, white, liberal, conservative, religious, atheist - it is the all consuming need to be outraged.

Assuming you aren't trolling, the above statement is incorrect. In science, a "law" is just a repeated and repeatable observation. There isn't any proof of anything involved. Hypotheses and theories frequently arise to explain laws.

gilgigamesh: Nabb1: WorldCitizen: Sock Ruh Tease: Why is there an actor who plays Satan in a History Channel miniseries?

This is why I dropped cable.

Because one channel ran a show you don't like? That'll show 'em.

I think he meant because all of these channels that used to show some great documentaries and educational TV are now devoted almost exclusively to crap reality shows. And he is right.

In fact, this miniseries is actually about as good as you can get nowadays.

Not too long ago, you could easily find marathons where you could lose yourself all weekend -- History Channel, Discovery, TLC (which used to be the Learning Channel, as hard as that is to believe) and Discovery Science (which I was all psyched for, does it even still exist?) would always have stuff about dinosaurs, Roman dynasties, WW2, theories on interstellar travel and physics, the origins of man, you name it.

Its a wasteland now. I can't bear to watch those channels anymore, let alone pay for them.

You know what I miss?  The Operation.  I found the entire show morbidly fascinating, even though for the longest time I was completely creeped out anytime I sat and truly thought about how we're all just a bunch of bones and organs sewn up into a leaky meatbag.

2013-03-18 12:30:15 PM
It's too bad that the content in the Bible is unsuitable for must fundies, and this will just be another watered-down propaganda piece with only the favorite bedtime stories.  What they really need to do is hand off their cult money to a real production team and do the whole thing Game of Thrones style, with all the murder and rape and incest and backstabbing buggery included, the way our religious ancestors intended.  Who learns a lesson from just being unhappily inconvenienced?  People really take it to heart if the consequences are shown in violent, wrath-of-god and cruelty-of-man style.

2013-03-18 12:30:27 PM
I'm not religious at all but while it certainly has it's faults this series has actually been pretty interesting.  The only thing I really don't like about it so far aside from hilariously corny acting/production is that they often have to glaze over a ton of the detail of the stories and they skip around for some reason.  Whose bright idea was it to show Moses meet the Pharaoh and then skip back to Abraham, then skip to Moses as a boy, then back to Moses/the plagues.  WTF?!  This is a History series not Reservoir Dogs.

TLDR
The Bible it's pretty good and entertaining.  WAY more entertaining and informative than Vikings.  I did not notice this Obama thing at all.  I think it's weird that someone did.

I haven't watched this.  I do love the Easter lead up stories they used to do.  Jewish history.  Roman occupation of Palestine.  Was Jesus real?  What would he have looked like?  How did crucifiction work?  What would his last meal have been like?  Those stories are fascinating to me.

But this idea of a mini-series covering the entirety of the Bible is strange.  I guess I'd love one covering Mohamed and the Quran though.  Of course that's just blasphemous.
