The biggest problem of linking this guy to Obama is that the only thing that does resemble Obama is the nose.

Besides that everything else is different.

No, because the Science Channel, History Channel, Discovery Channel, History International, NatGeo, and similar channels all started showing reality TV crap and other unintellectual things unrelated to their names/original purpose. And it apparently works for their ratings, and that is fine. It just left me without any real incentive to pay $100 a month for cable.

Whoever is in charge of this should spontaneously explode on live TV, maybe after being struck by lightning.  The fact that has not and will not happen is about the biggest proof that god does not exist in all of recorded history.  It should honestly be a basis for a new atheist based religion, the fact that the people associated with this crap arent just farking exploding publicly.  I mean really this level of farkery justifies a galactic sized foot and leg coming from the sky and squishing these farkers flat with a booming voice yelling "OH JUST fark YOU, SERRIOUSLY!"

I think he meant because all of these channels that used to show some great documentaries and educational TV are now devoted almost exclusively to crap reality shows. And he is right.

In fact, this miniseries is actually about as good as you can get nowadays.

Not too long ago, you could easily find marathons where you could lose yourself all weekend -- History Channel, Discovery, TLC (which used to be the Learning Channel, as hard as that is to believe) and Discovery Science (which I was all psyched for, does it even still exist?) would always have stuff about dinosaurs, Roman dynasties, WW2, theories on interstellar travel and physics, the origins of man, you name it.

Its a wasteland now. I can't bear to watch those channels anymore, let alone pay for them.

All valid points. At least the Bible, whether you believe or not, has historical significance as a book, and the stories it tells have significance beyond whether they are true or not by the sheer influence the had on shaping western civilization.

Actually there was a less likely chance Middle Easterners were very brown 2,000 years ago. DNA studies show that a huge percent of Middle Eastern ancestry comes from black African women due to the slave trade importing massive quantities of females that were often taken as concubines by Middle Eastern men with fewer options. The Arab slave trade didn't really take off until centuries after Jesus' alleged existence.

Yemeni Arabs, due to their proximity to Africa and significant role in the slave trade have ~25% of their ancestry from black Africans and they often look it. That % of recent African ancestry drops the further you get from the Gulf nations.

Though in the article's comments, someone asks why they didn't get comments from Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton on the Obama resemblance. It's not a documentary but it is a pretty faithful retelling of an Old Norse saga. Ragnar's Saga to be exact. I imagine the Bible series is being treated the same way. That is, putting that story (even the mystical elements) on screen and not trying to come up with hokey midichlorian-type explanation for those elements.

What's a Nubian?

Shut the fark up! Now... Satan, he's a rebellious brother, y'know, down with the free will and all that good shiat. Then this cracker, Jesus, gets his hands on a crown of thorns and the boy decides he's gonna run the farkin' universe; gets a whole clan of whites. And they together go and bust up Satan's hood and throw him in a pit for a thousand years. Now what the fark do you call that?

Ahhhh, the common Christopher Hitchens fan.

Look--betting on or challenging someone to 'prove' the existence of God is a sucker's bet.  They can't do it.  You know they can't.  I know they can't.  If they're being honest, they know they can't.  But scornful disdain for a person's faith, such as that you're exhibiting, makes you a shiatty person, not them.  I'll never understand why anyone thinks Hitchens was smart.  Arguing about evidence where there is none is the most simple-minded schtick there is.  At least he made money off of it, his followers are just dolts.

Here's the thing--faith doesn't require proof.  Hell, not even scientific theory has been proven.  Once it is, we call it a law.  The law of gravity is a law because it has been proven.  The theory of relativity is still not proven, so it's still a theory.   Leave proof of God to theologians, and proof of relativity to physicists.  But don't be surprised when someone believes in something that can't be proven.

Get over yourself.

2013-03-18 11:12:26 AM
Hmm, two non-pale males...that's about the only resemblance.

Obama has a pointy chin, this actor has a square chin.
The actor's nose is turned up significantly more than Obama's.
Obama has smoother, younger looking features - no deep lines in his face.
Kind of hard to tell, but it looks like the actor's ears are significantly droopier than Obama's.
It also appears that he actor has a thicker neck than Obama.

So yeah, enough discrepancies for me to say that the actor doesn't resemble Obama as much as some people would like.

Manufactured outrage is manufactured.

....and Mark Burnett totally skipped out on the description of Satan in the Bible..I seriously doubt Satan would've appeared as a wrinkly old 100 yr old African in a black robe when he was trying to temp Jesus.

in the bible... His name originally was Lucifer and he was described like a bright morning star.  Satan was the greatest of all of God's creation.  The greatest of all the angels and the most being that God has ever created, including any human being ever made.  When he was created by God, there was nothing like him in the entire universe and in all of God's creation.

In Ezekiel 28:12-18 you will find God describing him:  "Thus says the Lord GOD, You had the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: The ruby, the topaz, and the diamond; The beryl, the onyx, and the jasper; The lapis lazuli, the turquoise, and the emerald; And the gold, the workmanship of your settings and sockets, was in you. On the day that you were created they were prepared. You were the anointed cherub who covers, and I placed you there. You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked in the midst of the stones of fire. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created. Until unrighteousness was found in you."

Satan was of the highest rank of all angels created; greater in power and rank than even Michael and Gabriel.

Can we just dispense with the pleasantries. Lets get right down to it and point out that the entire Lucifer/Devil almost mirrors the more ancient mythology of the Canaanites of the god Attar who attempt to unseat the god Baal, was unsuccessful and thus descended to the underworld to rule it instead?

In fact there is almost no part of modern Christianity that doesn't in some way mirror large portions of the Canaanite mythos. Which is pretty damn funny when you think about it, since it was the Jewish people who over took and slaughter the people of Canaan after their exodus from Egypt.

That "Satan" does not even as much as resemble Obama in any way other than being black.  Seriously folks, unless better evidence than this then it is probably more evidence about the people making the accusation.

Now if only the only blacks in the series are bad guys and background characters then I could see accusation based on that.  Looking up the cast, I see the narrator is black which does not bode well for the idea.

Is Ham in this thing?  Ham being black is a traditional nonsense justification of racism commonly used by fundies.

I didn't say I believe in it, I only find the supposed timeline rather amusing as a backdrop when looking at modern Christianity.

They might have fled from somewhere, but some mass exodus out of Egypt would have been recorded elsewhere. The Egyptians were pretty good about keeping records. And even if say they were there, as slaves and all historical records would have been struck from every wall, tablet, etc.. (which would have left numerous amounts of evidence) , they would have never been allowed to work on things as say movies portray them.

Lucifer and Beezlebub. They controlled Hell with a legion of General and Captain Fallen Angels and demons under them. How they got jumbled up, I forget. Maybe some monks were tired of writing everything in long hand and just bunched them up to save time and wrists.)

Also, in this same miniseries they also have black and Asian angels, as well as a black Samson. But I don't see anyone pointing that out as well.

Does black Samson look like The Rock?  Cuz that would be pretty cool.  And prove this was a Disney production.

Satan is also an angel, and one of the Firstborn. He is a rather handsom fellow, and rules the Southern Regency. Beelzebub assists him as much as he can even though (after the Third Wave) he is trapped in the frm of a Golden Retriever. Lucifer rules the Eastern regency with his consort Lilith.

Wow ... so much wrong in so little space. That takes talent.

You call the poster a "shiatty person" because he shows disdain for the religious. Isn't this name calling showing disdain for this poster? Does that make you a hypocrite?

You make assumptions that everyone agrees that there is no evidence for god(s) and therefore it shouldn't be argued. You must be new here to Fark ... the religious argue that there is evidence every day. If you agree that there is no evidence then help us explain it to them or sit back and let the adults talk.

The "Law of Gravity" is a mathematical law which deals with the magnitude of the force of attraction between two objects based on their masses and the distance between them. It is not a law from the physics point of view. Math deals in absolutes ... science does not. There are different theories on how gravity actually works ... the science is not well understood and is most certainly not "a law".

Scientific theories generally are not converted to laws ... it is not some graduated process. They tend to gain or lose support as evidence is gathered. Some have so much evidence that every remotely intelligent person accepts them to be true but they don't change state to 'law'.

Fact: Human beings have a built in need to feel and express outrage.
Difficulty: We live in the safest, most affluent, softest world than humans have ever inhabited, and literally have nothing of any substance to complain about.

Dude, if it wasn't for manufactured outrage, we wouldn't have no outrage at all. WE should not disparage the critical service that all the hard-working men and women in the outrage industry provide for us.
For if there is any one thing that unites us all - men, women, black, white, liberal, conservative, religious, atheist - it is the all consuming need to be outraged.

gilgigamesh: Nabb1: WorldCitizen: Sock Ruh Tease: Why is there an actor who plays Satan in a History Channel miniseries?

This is why I dropped cable.

Because one channel ran a show you don't like? That'll show 'em.

You know what I miss?  The Operation.  I found the entire show morbidly fascinating, even though for the longest time I was completely creeped out anytime I sat and truly thought about how we're all just a bunch of bones and organs sewn up into a leaky meatbag.

2013-03-18 12:30:15 PM
It's too bad that the content in the Bible is unsuitable for must fundies, and this will just be another watered-down propaganda piece with only the favorite bedtime stories.  What they really need to do is hand off their cult money to a real production team and do the whole thing Game of Thrones style, with all the murder and rape and incest and backstabbing buggery included, the way our religious ancestors intended.  Who learns a lesson from just being unhappily inconvenienced?  People really take it to heart if the consequences are shown in violent, wrath-of-god and cruelty-of-man style.

2013-03-18 12:30:27 PM
I'm not religious at all but while it certainly has it's faults this series has actually been pretty interesting.  The only thing I really don't like about it so far aside from hilariously corny acting/production is that they often have to glaze over a ton of the detail of the stories and they skip around for some reason.  Whose bright idea was it to show Moses meet the Pharaoh and then skip back to Abraham, then skip to Moses as a boy, then back to Moses/the plagues.  WTF?!  This is a History series not Reservoir Dogs.

TLDR
The Bible it's pretty good and entertaining.  WAY more entertaining and informative than Vikings.  I did not notice this Obama thing at all.  I think it's weird that someone did.

I haven't watched this.  I do love the Easter lead up stories they used to do.  Jewish history.  Roman occupation of Palestine.  Was Jesus real?  What would he have looked like?  How did crucifiction work?  What would his last meal have been like?  Those stories are fascinating to me.

I think he has a point.  Bible-dramas have been done over and over and over, and there's nothing wrong with that.  No one has ever done a Mohammed/Quran drama (well, apart from that nonsense on YouTube).  I guess mainly because some crazy SOBs would start blowing shiat up because that images of the Prophet are considered blasphemous.

I_C_Weener: ExpressPork: WAY more entertaining and informative than Vikings.

I watched the first episode of Vikings (not the Bible yet) and thought about how ESPN tried to dabble in drama.  It reminded me of Brian Dennehy playing Bobby Knight.

And while I agree with many other posters here that the series is "cheap" looking - I guess they are doing the best with what they had to work with.  It really would be outstanding as a longer series with more money.  Maybe they should have started with a trial run of less episodes with higher prod value.  It definitely is far from being without fault - there are moments when I laughed out loud at the corniness (see pharoah's battle-cry as he chases the jews into the red sea) but regardless I can't stop watching and I'd like to think I'm learning a lot of religious history, which I find fascinating.

Also now that I know and fully understand the Bible's story of Abraham, his descendants and Moses....

Satan is ugly. He is a demon. Lucifer, on the other hand, is the pretty boy being a Fallen Angel and all. Back during Biblical times, they were two separate beings. (The trinity was Satan.

Black samson looks like mark henry if we are going with a wrestling angle. Most of the rest of the characters look like dirty white guys.

arethereanybeernamesleft: Speaker2Animals: Care to answer the other question posed to you, professor? Any "real" evidence of his existence as religions portray him? Difficulty: bible =/= real.

Now I'm even more convinced that there isn't a god

"Do you ever, after drafting one of your witty, controversial posts ever pause before clicking the "add comment" button and ask yourself "Is this really worth posting"?"

I daresay, if you did, you be posting a helluva lot less.

Especially since he was supposed to have been born in an area where most people had brown complexions, not white. And can anyone shown me where in the bible does it actually claim he has a white complexion since the people making this claim often use that book as their point of reference?

it's true this guy playing the devil doesn't really look that much like Obama, but he does look a bit like the 'evil Obama' pics that circulate among the fundie "Obama is a demon" crowds.
So a picture photoshopped to make Obama look like the devil happens to look like an actor dressed up to play the devil on a tv show.
How the hell does that happen...
both were intended to portray Obama as the devil?

makes no difference to me. This show and that actor doesn't amount to anything outrage worthy.
I'm not even outraged by the fact that there are so many fundie nutjobs who think Obama is actually a minion of satan. I didn't expect much from fundie nutjobs in the first place. Same goes for the channel that brought us this guy

Seriously. It says the Beast has seven heads and ten crowns. Where does it wear the three extra crowns? And why seven heads? One for each day of the week?

And why does a book about an all-loving, all-compassionate god have a book that describes how horribly this god will destroy the world and humanity? Christians really seem to have a hardon for the end of the world and the destruction of everything, especially all of those who they hate and despise.

They voted on what books were in and what were out at the Council of Nicea.  Basically the books they chose compose the Bible as we know it.  The Council of Trent was an ecumenical council in response to the Protestant Reformation.  They addressed Church doctrine and the Holy Sacraments, but as far as I know, they didn't change the Bible's contents itself.

That and the Council or Nicea would be nice.  Or some of the weirder episodes in the Vatican over the years.
But the Bible is not one coherent story.  It really has many different themes and stories.  Its not like different chapters of The Hobbit.  Its more like The Hobbit, Romeo and Juliet, then The Perfect Storm, then The Time Machine.  No coherence.
A Quran story would be nice. I'd like to see someone make some sense of it. And a true biography of Mohamed would be nice.  His story is only told in the broadest of strokes but a warrior prophet rising to power out of the desert tribes is Tales of Arabian Nights worthy.

I'm not sure the whole "banging a 9-year-old episode" would make it past the censors.
Also, any attempt to present an accurate biography of Mohammad (or even one based solely on reliable hadith) would be met with riots, firebombing, regular bombings, murders, threats, etc., in dozens of countries.

Now it's a nine year old instead of ten?  Anyhow does it actually mention this in the quran or are there other soruces other than people looking to bash Islam?   I do however agree with the last part of the sentence.  Only a country that had no Muslims living in it at all would consider doing a program like this.

And if the Bible said Jesus was a one-eyed one-horned flying purple people eater who came to Earth to save mankind from the threat of Darth Vader from the planet Vulcan, would you unquestioningly accept it as the absolute truth?

It's both cute and sad how desperately Christians will try to justify everything in order to keep their faith in a being who demands complete servitude or else he'll send you to eternal unspeakable torture.

Depends on who's theory of who wrote you want to believe. Traditionalists think it was written by John the Apostle during a time where Christians weren't exactly the most popular people on the planet and writing something that would predict the downfall of Kings, Governments, etc.. was a good way to get yourself on the business end of a rope, axe, cross, or all three. So they think it was written allegorically so as to avoid possible retribution for writing it.

Modernists think it was actually written by three people, because of the three distinct writing styles and on technical point they have merit in that theory since it wasn't even accepted into canon until almost 400 AD. In this regard the text was still allegorical however it was the forward interpretation of previous texts, writings, oral tradition, etc.. that influenced it over those three writings.

I tend to agree with the latter, that the text was originally written allegorical and spoke of current events, governments, kings, queens, etc... and was done to avoid possible punishment. This text was then taken and rewritten into what we have today, which attempts to make it vague enough so as to allow interpretations like that crazy Left Behind series, or even now running the gambit amongst the evangelical crowd that this most recent Pope is going to be the last pope because of <insert crazy theory here>

Or you could just accept like many of us here, its complete and utter bull shiat.

the fact that, if he existed at all, he was born in the middle east 2000 years ago. and if you were born in the middle east 2000 years ago, it was almost certain that you were brown.

Mohammed was described as white.

LOL Wut?

BTW, am I the only complete atheist that is thoroughly enjoying this series?  It's the awesome.  (like Vikings too)

Not an atheist but, yeah, haven't laughed this hard in a long time. When you grow up with Pentacostals in the family, you either become a hard-core atheist (my sister) or you just don't take it so seriously (my brother and me).

Yes, white.  http://wikiislam.net/wiki/Qur'an,_Hadith_and_Scholars:Muhammad's_Whit e _Complexion

or Google "mohammed was white".
I found this site amusing - true or not....whatever, it's all make believe anyway:

http://www.islamreview.com/articles/neitherblacknorafrican.shtml

I'm super cereal about The Bible.  If you haven't watched the Bible series so far, give it a chance.   Atheists ought to love it even more than Christians.  It does nothing to hide the cruelty and violence of religious peoples of the day.  The one problem I'm having is the commercials aren't long enough to go outside for a cigarette and a beer, so when I come back in, fifty years may have passed in the story-telling.

Didnt "sum of all fears" remove the Muslims also?

Anyway the point is this Obama-Satan thing breaks a long standing Hollywood tradition of making the white guy the bad guy. Which makes this a Civil Rights triumph for the oppressed white actors who are forced to be the bad guy guild.

Latinwolf: give me doughnuts:   I_C_Weener: Colour_out_of_Space: The only thing bible-related that the "History" Channel should be showing is a documentary on how the Council of Trent cherry-picked the documents that best served them politically and bundled them together as an anthology.

Nine.  First thing off Google:
http://www.faithfreedom.org/Articles/sina/ayesha.htm

And, for bonus points, Muslims use it to kill secular laws with higher ages of consent.  Google Yemen, for example.

Makes the Vatican look like a pro-child organization.

has anyone mentioned the Bible never says what Satan/devil looks like? Like at all? Indeed it never establishes he ever takes human form, or any physical form. The OT does say Lucifer is a fallen angel, so you could have him look like an angel, except the Bible never says what garden variety angels look like. The ones it does describe, aren't of the fly down from heaven variety and indeed it's not entirely clear just what they're there for in the first place.

Yeah, which is why atheists make Chick Tracts, tell everyone that they're responsible for natural disasters because they make God angry, proclaim that we must all swear fealty to God or we will be sent to eternal unspeakable torture by the supposedly all-loving and all-compassionate God who created existence out of love, are told by their faith to convert everyone and slaughter those who refuse to convert, make draconian laws punishing people for loving others who have the same genitals or fark out of wedlock, and demand that the United States declare one religion to be above all others and force everyone to follow it. And how about those Crusades and Inquisition? Let's not forget the annihilation of the native populations of the Americas.

People who need to cower in terror of offending a deity all of their lives in order to not rape and murder and steal for the chance to live in a mansion in an ideal perfection and constantly demonize and criticize others for not imitating them are not the people I want to associate with, have in power, or decide what I can and can't do with my personal life.

I'm not accusing you of this, but the fact that not one person offered anything even remotely considerable as definitive evidence was the answer I expected. "Oh, he must have been brown, because a lot of people there, at that time were brown." isn't really evidence. It is also kinda racist.

s2s2s2: give me doughnuts: Perhaps a source not related to an Abrahamic religious text?

I have been on fark long enough to know, that not answering the original question, and positing the question in the inverse as if it means something is no way to go through threads.

I'm not accusing you of this, but the fact that not one person offered anything even remotely considerable as definitive evidence was the answer I expected. "Oh, he must have been brown, because a lot of people there, at that time were brown." isn't really evidence. It is also kinda racist.

How is it racist? When everyone in a geographical area is the same skin tone because of genetics and evolution, it's not racist to say that everyone there would be that skin tone (is it racist to say that all Irish are pale? All Japanese have dark hair? You might as well consider it racist to say that all tigers have stripes). On the other hand, there are some unfortunate implications to declare that the son of God looks like European perfection, especially when he's saving the Middle Easterners from their sins.

Also, Jesus has been portrayed as whatever race has made the visual representation of him: Russian in Russia, Chinese in China, Indian in India. Maybe one of those is what Jesus looked like. Maybe he rapidly flashed between looking like every race on Earth. Maybe he was a one-eyed one-horned flying purple people eater. The Bible never said what he looked like. Wishful thinking and projecting says Jesus was European perfection, real life and science says he looked like the other inhabitants of the region.

cygnusx13: Historically significant, yes. Historically factual, no.

Melodramas are best left for Lifetime, mmkay.

If you want to remain ignorant of what in the Bible because religion makes you feel icky then that's your choice but it's worth knowing.  It's shaped world culture and events for thousands of years.  I think there is definitely intellectual value in knowing what's in it whether it's true or not in the same way that I think Shakespeare has historical significance.  Did the story of Hamlet really happen?  Of course not.  But is it worth knowing?  Certainly.  It's historically significant in that you're learning the "history" of Shakespeare.  Even though they are just "skimming" over the Bible I'm learning all kinds of interesting things from it.  From the story of Abraham to The Passion you can't deny that it provides a tremendous insight into human history and what has motivated western culture for centuries.
Do you feel ridiculous yet?

He really had that pretty face but can make your skin crawl Lucifer thing down pat. And he is probably my favorite Lucifer but Peter Stormare (Constantine) and Mark Pellegrino (Supernatural) both hold a special place in my Awesome Pop culture Lucifers list.

I just fast-forwarded Constantine to re-watch Stormare's performance. He's on the screen for less than 10 minutes, but damned if he doesn't make entire the movie worth watching.
Tilda Swinton didn't do badly either...

Not at all. I'm not the one who thinks that rivers turning to blood is "history" or Zombie Jesus is history.

Again, and more clearly for those who choose not to see, a HISTORY channel miniseries on the impact of the Bible on world history: yes. A HISTORY channel miniseries illustrating the fables in the bible: no.

You are right. Call it "skin-tonist". There was cultural(aka, skin tone, wah-wah) diversity in that area 2000 years ago. The place was occupied by Romans. Maybe it was a convenient way to cover a rape? Might even explain why republicans think of rape babies as precious gifts.

Best Satan ever

/If you disagree he'll lay you out and fill your mouth with your mother's feces

quoted for truth.  I generally see myself as a bad *shut your mouth* tough guy, but when I saw this movie I remember thinking that if that happened to me I'd pull up a chair and say "okay what did you want to talk about...the weather...you name it!"

I don't get out much.  What movie is this from?

1995's The Prophesy...  Most of the scare is about Christopher Walken as creepy Gabriel, but Viggo Mortensen's Satan is also magnificent.

Mugato: ciberido: Mad_Radhu: Always some white boy gotta invoke the holy books. Bust this: Those books are about how the white man keeps the brother man down, even long ago and far, far away. Check this shiat: You got cracker carpenter Jesus, Nazi poster boy, blond hair, blue eyes. And then you got Satan, the blackest brother in the world, Nubian demon!

The Book of Revelations?

They trying to tell us, deep inside we all want to be Democrats!

Well don't you?

Conservative rage!   Conservative rage!  I'll kill any liberal folks I lay my motherloving eyes on!

Revelation 1:13-16 describes Jesus' appearance in heaven, but it includes things like swords coming out of his mouth, so I'm not sure it counts towards a description of what he looked like while walking around on Earth.

So. The Old Testament Angels were all Dark Warriors. Then Mary comes along and her Angel is blonde.

Many cultures speak of light skinned, bearded, blonde dudes that came and helped them at various times.

Why then is it so shocking that people assume Jesus is one of them?
