There is a strategy to it.

I used to play a strategy against the littlebopper:  I'd throw whatever beats what would have beaten my last throw.  So if I threw rock last throw, it was almost guaranteed that the littlebopper would throw paper, so I'd throw scissors.  Next round, I'd throw paper because he'd throw rock, thinking I was going to throw scissors again.

I wouldn't *ALWAYS* do that, because that would be just mean, but I did it often enough that it wasn't easy for him.

Finally I explained to him what I was doing.  He now uses that strategy against his peers, and it works against those with a relatively short memory.

I always throw scissors first when playing against a woman, because they usually think men always choose rock first since it is the manliest. I then throw rock because women will then try to copy what you just threw. I win about 90% of the time with this strategy.

Clearly ,if they are going to spout Star Trek, they at least out to be a bit knowledgeable about the show they referenced. They tried to tell me the pecking order of the new game but they couldn't remember it. I spent thirty minutes trying to figure it out.

Then they told me it was a bit on some show I had never heard of before.

Or wear sunglasses, tell them you are blind, have them place their 'weapon' on your open hand to get them to believe you need to confirm their choice, then delay your choice by milliseconds after opponent committed.  Lower tech, but harder to find someone who doesn't know you can see.

This is pretty much my strategy, although I try to watch their eyes and see when they're catching on.  Usually after 2 or 3 throws they either realize what's happening or decide that their strategy isn't working and so they take it two steps further along... and I start throwing whatever would beat *that* :)

No it doesn't. In poker hands have a probability of winning, which then affects the "poker face" you also have the multiple rounds of betting/cards within each hand to look for tells. In rps each hand had the same exact chance of winning, and a hand is played all at once.

There is only one winning strategy. Always throw rock. Just make sure you throw it into their throat. Scissors to the eyes works too--but it's trickier to pull off. Hard paper to the ear has worked for some people in movies, but doesn't insure a retaliatory rock won't be thrown.

nah, here's how the mind of the average RPS player thinks:

This is actually exactly how you should play.  The reason being that a tie is much, much safer.  You can pretty much always guess what the person will NOT throw - so if you know they won't touch rock this round, you have a choice between scissors and paper - always throw scissors.  Yes, they may throw it, too, and so you've tied, but if they happen to throw paper, you're in great shape.

In my family, we decide many things using RPS.  What movie to watch, where to go to dinner, etc.  If it's for something that no one has strong feelings about either way, say, which river we go tubing in in the morning vs. which river we go tubing in in the afternoon, each participant claims a river and plays for it.  Pretty basic stuff.

We do have one unusual policy though.  We allow 'Hand of God', which beats anything.  You can only play 'Hand of God' once in your entire lifetime.  I haven't used mine yet.  I almost used it to name my little sister Gretchen biatchin' Rundall, but I refrained and she ended up being named Lauren Michelle instead.
