For all three vaccines asked about in the survey, other reasons parents gave for skipping their teenagers' shots included not thinking they were necessary, not having had a specific vaccine recommended by a doctor and, for the HPV vaccine, believing their child was not sexually active.

Hold on tight to that one, dad.

Don't these vaccines work for years (if not for the rest of your life in some cases)? Why would their current lack of sexually active (even if this is correct) be a reasonable reason to skip it?

I suppose parenting can cause some grand delusions. Even if a father can cognitively accept their daughter will probably have sex as a teenager, they will still hold on to that idea that their little princess will be a pure virgin up until the first night of her honeymoon. I'm guessing getting them a vaccine for their naughty bits just acknowledges the sexuality of their little girl and some people don't want to do that.

Remember, anti-vaxxers are not grounded in logic or reality. They create a narrative to justify their view. Sometimes it's the vaccine will give us autism, other times it's "my daughter will always be 8 years old and never have sex."

Heck, it requires 2 and sometimes 3 shots, given over a 6 month period (used to be over 2 years). So if she's about to become sexual active you can't get the shot right before.

How about the "I can't afford it" response?  Not all insurers cover gardasil, and you could be looking at $200-400 total costs depending on where you go.  Public health clinics are so slammed anymore that's hardly an option.  Yes, the uninsured can get assistance but what if you're the working poor, insured with crappy coverage?

Hopefully anyone who gets cervical cancer as a result of their parent's decision to not vaccinate will remember to bring this up at every family event for as long as they survive.

Oh, wow. Yes I did.
That makes much more sense now. In a paranoid crazy person way.
Still, I can say that I pay for both my daughters' vaccinations AND vacations.
So, if the ex is in the pocket of the mad bad chemical companies it seems she is willing to sacrifice her own kids to make her sales pitch believable. Plus, she isn't sharing the holidays with them.

The confusion is understandable, since selective poisoning that mostly kills the cancer while not quite killing the patient is how cancer is often treated once you have it.

2013-03-18 10:28:18 AM
Oh, BS. This has nothing to do with vaccine fear and everything to do with the fact that it removes one of the potential "punishments" for having sex.

If that's true, then that is a legitimate problem. I had never heard this. This is a public health issue, and as such, HPV vaccines should be subsidized by the government if necessary. It will save money in the long run with fewer people in their 20s and 30s developing cancer.

Jesus Tapdancing Christ on a Cracker.  I made sure my doctor gave it to my *son*, just so he can avoid being a carrier

Attention stupid people: you've been given a way for your children to avoid a horrible, highly lethal disease.  It has virtually no side effects.  Not giving it to them, either because the space rays tell you all vaccines are evil or because sex is evil is tantamount to child abuse.

/Not being able to afford it is a serious issue- it should be government subsidized, as should all vaccines.  They are, by far, the most cost effective health care around.

I honestly believe that you should be imprisoned. Free speech does not extend to the right to harm innocent people, which is exactly what you're attempting to do.

As a survivor myself, I have to say that the very low risks involved with the vaccines are totally worth it if I can protect either of my daughters from having to go through what I did.  (I had cancer during my second pregnancy - it was found after I gave birth, at age 29.  My docs thought that the pregnancy itself is what sped the cancer along so fast, hormones and all, since cervical cancer is generally a very slow moving beast.  One radical hysterectomy and lymphadenectomy later, I was cured of it  - but my childbearing years are long gone.  I've been cancer-free for nearly 8 years now, though.)

I've heard the vaccine is pricey if it's not covered by insurance - I had spoken to our family doctor about it a while back (my daughters are still too young for it, but eventually they'll get it).  When the time comes, hopefully there's a payment plan or something if ours doesn't cover it.

The speed at which this came to market.  The certainty they show that it's safe.  The push to inject every single person in the world with it.  The sudden realization that they can inoculate men too.  Paired with our for-profit medical establishment and the FDA's history of pulling drugs previously authorized from the market.  Man, we should all be a bit worried.

And hell, I'm pro-vaccine.  But 6 years of real world research on this drug administered to 11 year olds... Heh.  They aren't even adults yet.  We have no idea what the long term effects will really be.

These people who just jumped on the bandwagon must not remember history or lived in the 90's.  I remember every year there was a miracle weight loss drug that ended up causing cancer or heart problems.

Yeah, that's total stupidity.

1)  The series is supposed to be complete before sexual activity.

2)  You think she's going to remain a virgin forever?  Someday she'll need it, why wait?

No. People die from flu shots too, but far less than people that die from the flu. Some people have adverse reactions to vaccines, medications, etc. That's unavoidable thanks to a broad genetic diversity.

Don't be an idiot.

Everyone else? They can eat an infected dick. They're actively hurting America.
