This and personal experience is why I never, ever ever give any stranger a ride anymore.  100% of the times I've done it in the past, it's turned out to be some whiny con-artist who launched into a woe-is-me tearjerker plea to "bless" them with money.   They really didn't need to go anywhere, they just wanted a captive audience to try their scam.   I guess I'm just lucky that none of them tried to rob me or steal the car.

I've heard that the good samaritan impulse to pull over and help someone struggling with their car tire, etc. likewise puts you at risk of ambush.

I have developed this same attitude. Certain types of people will take advantage of those that help them, and actually feel contempt for anyone who does help them.

But you run a risk of damaging your engine if you don't hit them just right. Plus, people are resilient - you're going to have to back it up and go over them a few times to make sure.

That is why you invest in a good quality brush guard.  Just make sure to get it in a black finish so it is easy to repaint in a hurry.  Chrome would be a little bit more of a hassle if you can't find a car wash fast enough.  Also swerve as you hit, smack them with center of the front bumper and swerve to get them with the back tire.  In trucks this is quick and effective, not that I have had anytime to think about this.  It never occurred to me before now.  Although I have watched the original Death Race with Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine.

I can never seem to hitch a ride out of the loop after a night of drinking. I ask. They all say no. Saturday night was a funny one. Grown man tells me " my mom taught me to never give rides to strangers." This world has become quite the jaded place.

I'm sorry you've had such bad luck. I'm the most cynical person in the world but I'll still pick up most hitchhikers if I'm alone in the car. I've never had a bad experience and the most anyone has ever asked for has been a cigarette. Likewise I can't count the number of times I've had to turn down a "tip" from an old woman or woman with 5 kids in the car when I changed a tire for them or put on snow chains.
