Attempted murder/stalking, and they let her go the next year. The ballplayer refused to press charges.

You just don't hurt a poor confused young woman in those days.

The article says she was institutionalized for about 3 years before the charges were dropped.

I wouldn't think you had yet. Hence, "owes".

While there, she underwent electroconvulsive therapy, as well as hydrotherapy and occupational therapy, according to Theodore's book.

Occupational therapy? How barbaric!

I thought Hydrotherapy was going to be like water boarding.  Sadly, its just hot/cold tubs.

No, it's more like waterboarding. The cold tubs were filled with ice.

If the entire Cub roster had been fully armed this outrage would never have happened but for the fact the Cubbies couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with scatter gun.

Wait - newspapers are giving two-bit crazies that commit criminal acts obits now? What the hell, folks?

Yep. You want similar fun, look up "wet packing." Sounds innocuous, but in mental institutions it was done with ice-cold water - and it's still a practice that's performed, although few like to admit it, as a form of punishment for aggressive patients who act out.

Two-bit crazies who get made into movies, yes. Truddi Chase got an obituary in the Washington Post, and she didn't have a Robert Redford movie - just Shelley Long in a miniseries. That guy from The Basketball Diaries got a NYT obit, too. Generally speaking, if you've done something lots of people have heard about, you get an obituary. I really don't think there's a hard and fast rule, or at least, not one I'm aware of.

Look at those white pumps!  Everyone got dressed up in those days, even prisoners playing baseball in the yard. As well as baseball fans.  Most of the men wore suits and fedora hats.
