Must've been a nasty hangover.

Probably realized he was in Florida and took the easy way out.

If this guy was planning on going out in a blaze of glory it sounds like he got the order wrong...

See, Other Angry Crazy People? THIS is how you do it. If you have to kill someone, start with yourself.

Better yet, seek help before you get to that point and avoid killing anyone. But at least this guy didn't take anybody with him.

I don't know. Seems right to me.

Does anyone even realize how easy it is to make mercury fulminate?

2013-03-18 09:05:33 AM
Officials later said the death was caused by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sounds like this guy had just enough sanity left to realize who his first victim needed to be.

Because People in power are Stupid: Does anyone even realize how easy it is to make mercury fulminate?

I don't even know what that is, but I'm going to guess somebody probably knows that it's easy to make mercury fulminate. Chemists, bomb technicians, stupid kids with too much free time and an IRC client...

/ If, in fact, it is easy to make mercury fulminate.

This is why on my murder/suicide check list, my name is last and not first....

Nearly 59,999 students

Yeah, I followed the instructions from an episode of Breaking Bad.

I imagine that the explosives are the actual reason they evacuated.  :D

It's a primary explosive. Assuming one has access to basic chemistry supplies (mercury, nitric acid, ethanol, and distilled water) it's fairly easy to make.

That's what happens when you get the note cards out of order.

I see UCF is trying to fill that void in the Big East Miami left years ago.

It never occured to me to do shiat like make bombs and buy weapons when I was younger. I was too busy trying (and failing) to get laid.

Explosives in headline, no explosives in article.
Could have been a run of the mill suicide, without other indications.

So few suicide/murder attempts ever come to full fruition....

Local radio stations in Orlando are reporting that the bomb squad was called to the scene, but have not been saying that explosives were found.

way south: Explosives in headline, no explosives in article.

There's a line about improvised explosive devices in the article:  The FBI and the Orange County Sheriff's Office continue to investigate the death and the discovery of at least two guns and improvised explosive devices.

2013-03-18 09:18:06 AM
They should make it illegal to have guns and explosives on campus.

2013-03-18 09:18:30 AM
If only he had a gun, he would have been able to defend himself.

I disagree. Individuals desiring to commit mass murder and suicide should follow the example set.

Jokes aside, I farking loved UCF. The alerts were sent to me and woke me up even though I graduated several years ago.

The university confirmed explosive devices were found in the dorm, not garage as previously thought.

Those dorms are like high rise condos. Sons of biatches have a jimmy johns in the lobby that doorstep delivers.

Nice to see that somebody is focusing on the REALLY IMPORTANT aspect of the story.
Let's not forget who the REAL VICTIMS are, here.

Also, fulminate of mercury was used in the caps on percussion lock muskets in the 19th century, such as Model 1864 Springfield and the British Enfield. Although some tried actual paper tape caps, such as the Maynard tape priming system, the tapes could get wet and worthless, so caps were the way to go.

He got the order right.

If you wanna do a spree killing: Step 1 is shoot yourself in the head first.

Good, he took himself out without trying to drag as many people as he could with him. This is how it should be. If you can't bear to be on this planet anymore, don't make other people suffer for it. It might seem cold, but at least his final act wasn't a massacre. Find peace, troubled-guy.

Well, the article would've just called it an AR-15 anyway.  It could've been a bolt action for all we know.

Check his electronics to see if he was trying to do a youtube vid on gun safety.  You know for his Darwin nomination.

Yep, this is the proper way to carry out a mass killing spree.  First prepare your arsenal.  Second, make sure you leave a not explaining what you are doing and why.  Third and most importantly start the shooting by putting a round in your mouth, preferably at an upward angle.  When you are finished, go get 'em and make pay there, stud.

I stayed home after seeing the alerts, but will probably not wait until noon to head in.  Not sure if you were any where near there this morning, but am I safe to assume the NE corner (around the water tower) is accessible?

His attempt may not have come to fruition.
As he reached for his source of ignition,
He found on his bed,
A large bill instead,
And thought, screw this outrageous tuition.

I work on Research Park and I don't need to go through campus to get there from where I live. No clue, but I assume it's fine since they sent a mass message saying garage G is open again at around 8am.

I can't even think of anything snarky to say about this.  Just sad, especially when counseling and therapy are absolutely free there.
