This is why when someone mentions something that someone else doesn't understand, the second party may not rush off to Google whatever the first party mentioned but first ask for clarification in the thread itself.

Yeah, I searched the term on urban dictionary instead of google.  For some reason that felt much safer.

Could someone fill those of us who are at work in? I'm really, really curious now.

I didn't say we weren't getting screwed. We're ranked something like 65th in the world for affordable internet connections.

I thought that had a lot to do with population density. It costs more to run cable to / in the 'burbs than to a bunch of apartment complexes.

*yawn* Wake me up when countries with the same land size, regional climates, multiple mountain ranges and population can reach our speed and reliability.

So, Russia, China, Australia and Canada?

/Granted Canada and Australia don't come close on population

2013-03-18 06:31:37 PM
Ther was more to that comment but I goofed.

At least Russia has 1/2 the US population, Australia and Canada are less than 1/10

China is 6X US pop for those who care.

Brazil has 2/3 US pop, huge natural resources, BUT they don't have a mountain over 10K feet

/the world is such an interesting place

2013-03-18 07:05:50 PM
The country has just 1,024 IP (Internet protocol) addresses

Huh. Exactly one kilobyte. I wonder if that's coincidence or if there's some bizarre technical reason for that.

We really don't have a competitor, no one has to deal with the challenges the United States has. We have network connectivity in sub-arctic climates, deserts, islands, swaps, forests, mountains and plains.

So while some countries have large populations, large landmass or interesting eco-systems. None of them have all three that includes most of our population having stable, scalable and reliable Internet.

I've heard that America city-planners, road workers and "tunnel creators" are some of the best in the world. Every time I drive alone I-70 in Colorado I can understand why. The engineering is stunning ... AND I get highspeed Internet at the cafe on top of the mountain before I snowboard down.

yawn.  so i can assume, from what you said, that the large cities in America can compete with south korea, japan, etc in internet speeds, right??   and they can do it for half the price, right?

wrong.
