1. Why is this in the politics tab? This should be Main Page
2. Its not that I dont believe the son, I just dont understand why he would fight for civil rights in a time when doing so could end up costing your career while to boot not believing in what you are doing.

Fun fact: most of the Phelps "clan" are lawyers or disbarred lawyers .

They make their money from litigation.

So you're saying that Fred Phelps is insensitive?

2013-03-18 09:33:16 AM
Fred Phelps saw an opportunity with the passing of the Civil Rights Act to cash in. "There was a lot of money, and a lot of opportunity," he says.

Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson were unavailable for comment.

Dear Fark Mods,

Fred Phelps is the most vile life form on Earth, and his passing will be noted with a chorus of happiness upon news of his demise.

When Fred Phelps dies, and he will and will soon, I would suggest not trying to stop the apocalyptic tsunami of Schadenfreude that will come splashing across the Fark comment section. Your pleas to "respect the dead and his family" will not be heard, and you won't be able to stop even one per cent of the comments you may deem offensive. You will go mad trying to moderate them all.

Just......step away from the keyboard and allow the visceral surge of righteous joy to happen. The Human Race deserves to have this one day of happiness. Thwart that joy at your own peril.

PS: And please don't attempt to pull some "Server Is Down" sh*t either that will just coincidentally happen on that day. We're way ahead of you on that trick, and we'll only be saving up our comments while we wait for the server to come back online.

I said this in last week's Phelp thread, but it was lost near the end...

The rumor around Topeka is that Fred has been dead since at least September of last year.  No funeral, no obituary, no announcement, therefore no grave to dance on.

/Just a rumor, no proof from me.

Nate says his father became an itinerant preacher, attempting to save Mormons in Utah and Native Americans in the south west, and believing that he was never going to die.

Yeah, a LOT of us feel that way about Fred...

You're serious? This was the PERFECT cause for a young lawyer to take up. Civil Rights litigation would be a goldmine, and it would take someone stupid not to see that. While Phelps may be a lot of things, I'm betting "stupid" isn't one of them.

So in other words, he's a typical democrat.

"Fred Waldron Phelps, Sr. (born November 13, 1929) is an American pastor heading the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), an independent Baptist church based in Topeka, Kansas. Phelps is a disbarred lawyer, founder of the Phelps Chartered law firm, and a former civil rights activist. A member of the Democratic Party, he has occasionally run for political office. In the election for United States Senator for Kansas in 1992, he received 49,416 votes (30.8%) in the Democratic primary, coming in second after Gloria O'Dell (who subsequently lost to later presidential candidate Bob Dole). Sorry for feeding the troll, but what exactly is it about Phelps that makes him a typical Democrat? He's not typical for either party. He's an attention whore who abused his kids and made his money through church-related schemes and litigation. In 1994, Democrats were taking the US Senate candidate seriously. They had such a great opportunity to defeat Senate Majority/Minority Leader Bob Dole. I don't even recall him being on the ballot. That would have been my last primary as a Kansan. I remember O'Dell. I would imagine some of his support was anti-woman. Joan Finney was still governor and she was a disaster. Some votes came from people who just didn't care. Some didn't even know who Phelps was. All he was really known for in Western Kansas was his anti-gay protest. I'm sure that won him some votes as well.

The whole point of the Phelps operation is to create outrage.  I don't think killing them is the right response, but they definitely go out of their way to make people hate them; it's not just a matter of disagreeing with their opinions, it's the--oh, what's the point?!

This is true. I grew up in a very, very small town in Western Kansas. Every year for the Kansas Kids State wrestling tournament we'd go to the Expocentre and every year Phelps and Friends would be there with their colorful AW signs. I was always creeped out by the little kids out "protesting". At the time, I thought they were certain we were all homosexuals. Didn't stop me from winning state championships, though. But looking back, this was in the early 90's, the Expocentre during the state tournament was probably a big venue for him then, I don't know. I suppose it could be both.
