Wait, so she got off a plane right before takeoff, one of 35 passengers who did so, because of a suspected fuel leak, then the plane later got diverted to Las Vegas because it was low on fuel? I am not sure why this is seen as crazy behavior.

Given that it was Saturday and she's due in court monday, I'm pretty sure it doesnt matter.  There were plenty of planes that flew with first class seats open from NYC to LAX after that time.  Hell, they're flying right now.  She could have gotten on an early flight this morning and still made it.  Actually, she could have gotten in a car and driven to LA and made it to court on time.

Sadly she caught another flight on Sunday, article link is in the section below this article.

1. A plane that is leaking fuel in any manner that would be detectable by passengers would NOT have taken off. Ever. Even if the owner of the airline himself came down and demanded they take off, no pilot in their right mind would have complied.

2. Planes in the air that have leaked enough fuel not to have made it to their destination do not simply "Stop in Vegas for more", and continue on.

Personally I think the crazy part is you accepting her excuse as fact without corraboration. According to TFA that's just what she told her friends.... and if 35 other people really did get off the plane you'd expect that to have been easily corraborated. It hasn't been, so...........

If

thirty five people also got off of the plane, I suspect it had more to do with the crazy chick yelling about OMG A FUEL LEAK than an actual fuel leak.

A little too heavy on the derp buddy. Maybe you should have some experience actually flying on planes before you decide to mouth off ignorantly.

"Mechanical problems" is all they'll usually tell you, but if you ask the right people on the plane you can get more information. The plane was grounded so there was in fact mechanical problems. The fact that they even let people get off the plane at all means that it was enough of a risk that they broke protocol. Even if it wasn't actually a leak, which is verified because the plane didn't make it to LA, (what they just didn't fill it up the entire way?) as someone else has mentioned, even someone misinterpreting the problem can be enough to scare other passengers into not taking any perceived risk. I know I would have gotten off the plane if I was waiting around for "mechanical issues," and rumor spread there was a fuel leak.

Hell, one time my flight from ATL to Newark took off after 2 hours of mechnical problems, got to the point we were about to land, decided that we didn't fix the necessary navigational piece to safely land, turned around, landed back at ATL, tried to fix the plane, then they eventually gave up. Took 16 hours for a 2 hour flight. CSB.

People get off all the time for all kinds of reasons. Some legit (personal emergency, forgot iPad, etc..), and some not (think that because they smell fuel that the plane is leaking, a bad feeling, suddenly decide they don't want to travel). That isn't breaking protocol to let someone off, especially while you are sitting at the gate. If someone wants off, we let them off. I've had flights cancel because we were late and a passenger wants off. Granted, those are times when we are severely late already.

Even if it wasn't actually a leak, which is verified because the plane didn't make it to LA, (what they just didn't fill it up the entire way?) as someone else has mentioned, even someone misinterpreting the problem can be enough to scare other passengers into not taking any perceived risk. There are MANY factors that can cause you to have to stop and get more fuel. Its rare, but it happens. Delays getting off the ground at JFK are maddening. The weather can cause you to wait in line for hours just to get off the ground. Then stronger than forecasted headwinds, especially over a flight that long, cause you to burn more fuel than planned. You may have to deviate around weather, or there is military activity you have to go around. Again, its rare, but not totally unheard of.

Hell, one time my flight from ATL to Newark took off after 2 hours of mechnical problems, got to the point we were about to land, decided that we didn't fix the necessary navigational piece to safely land, turned around, landed back at ATL, tried to fix the plane, then they eventually gave up. Considering the systems on most commercial airplanes and the backups available, something sounds odd about that. Without knowing the specifics, its hard to say exactly why they took you all the way back to ATL. I can guess why, but it would only be a guess and you probably wouldn't like what I suspect their reasons were.

I'm curious as to what mechanical problem would make it more dangerous to land at Newark than Atlanta.  I mean you are already preparing to land in Newark, but then have to go all the way back to Atlanta?  Are the runways at Atlanta made of pillows?

Hey genius... what you're calling "derp" is just what normal people call "not being an idiot".

The report is that Lindsay "told her friends" a bunch of people left the plane, but no one has actually confirmed that actually happened. The only confirmation we have is that one person, Lindsay herself, got off. Anything else is speculation based on forth-hand information supposedly from Lindsay Lohan.... so if you want to believe that without question then I guess that's fine, but you really shouldn't start calling anyone else ignorant if your standard for vetting information is something Lindsay Lohan told her friends that TMZ is reporting on.

The rest of what you wrote after that is irrelevant, dumbass.

Once the doors close people almost never get off. In about ~1 million miles flying prior to the age of 30, almost all domestic, ive seen people get off the plane after the door has closed in maybe a hand full of flights, and only if there was an issue keeping us at the gate already.

I think you're vastly overstating how often people abandon flights.
