Wow, the house that I own back in Ohio was built in large part by clearing the trees from the plot. They cut down the trees and used the wood to frame it, in addition to the massive oak beams in the basement which act as the structural foundation. That house was built in 1910, and I seriously doubt that anyone stamped the wood before they used it for the home. I guess that means that my 100+ years old house should be demolished because it isn't up to code. Afterall, they didn't pay some inflated price to a lumber mill and/or Home Depot for the wood, so it must be bad. Nevermind that it has stood for over 100 years.

Perhaps you're OK with sending your children to a "summer camp" that is a breeding ground for disease, hell you might even be OK with people being able to shiat directly into the water that's going to be coming out of your kitchen faucet, there is no accounting for taste, but I'm frankly sick and tired of idiots who want to whine about "the gubmint" checking shiat out to make sure it meets minimum safety codes.

People believe what they want to believe. Farkers have already had it explained to them that this guy is a money-hustling, attention whoring phony - but they are so desperate to believe his fake narrative of the independent, bootstrappy individualist being trod upon by the mean old government that they just shut their eyes and ears, and turn up the volume.

THIS.

As far as I'm concerned, if it's just him living there I don't care if he attempts to weave his open-air-kitchen walls out of the dry pine needles on the ground. But as soon as he starts having non-family stay there for pay, then there's a reason for there to be rules. And I'm talking minimal rules, like, "the building is structurally sound enough that it won't fall and kill the people sleeping in it", and "the bathroom and cooking facilities won't spread disease". One can still go full rustic, without electricity, without high pressure running water, and still meet these basic requirements. I'm sorry for this guy that he apparently didn't seek out what the rules are, but it's his job to keep his guests/lodgers safe.

You do realize farkloads of people died from this kind of shiat in the 1700s and 1800s, right?  Just because someone did live through something, doesn't mean we should aspire to re-enacting it for all time.  There were Jewish children who lived through the Shoah, but that doesn't mean all summer camps should be modeled on Dachau.  In a way it is kind of funny though.  Throughout history, people have worked to make their lives better and less inherently dangerous.  We, however, complain mightily that out homes, workplaces, and public spaces are not trying to actively kill us enough

Yes, because you'd have to be a fat, soft, white, male youth to want to make sure someone other than the person who's providing you with the food you're eating is safe, labeled correctly, and not bacteria ridden.

People are complaining because a) he's got a lot of people going up there, and b) it's not all that primitive. He's serving food from a kitchen that's got some kind of gas range; he's got people staying for extended periods of time using open latrines. So far as I know, they are not signing waivers saying "If my kids get dysentery from your kitchen or E. coli from your outdoor toilets, I relieve you of all responsibility." And in this day and age, when this eventually happens (and it eventually will), the people who get sick or injured are not going to stop at suing Mr. Dan'l Boone Mountain Man. They're going to sue the County and probably the state for not ensuring his little mountain camp was not up to code.

Then he'll be out of business for good, and the state and county will be out of a lot of money; plus, a lot of other camps will likely preemptively shut down just in case they too get sued before the inspectors hit their doors. Or, we can ask Dan'l there to just bring his camp up to code.

Not sure if serious, but I'm guessing you are not running a summer camp or any other business out of your house.

From other articles linked in this thread, it sounds like this situation is a lot closer to being resolved than the Daily Fail made it out to be. In my opinion, the Founding Fathers would have thought "The last Real Man in America" to be a big whiner for trying to game to system and then playing the victim card. Anyway, I'm sure there will be a donations website up soon, so bootstrappy folks can invest in upgrading his latrines.

Why did you bold the "North"? Are you implying that South Carolina is less conservative? Because that's what that suggests, and implies that you're high on a variety of drugs.

North Carolina is the more liberal, sane one. It's the one that voted for Obama in 2008. We've had a teabagger infestation recently, but the state as a whole has been pretty moderate for the last few decades. While Jessie Helms got perpetually re-elected, so did Sam Ervin.

Don't you watch cable. He's got one reality show airing on Tuesdays where he chops wood, cleans up chicken poop and feeds pigs in between commercials. Then on Wednesday he's got another one where he and his wife take in boarders from the county jail and teach them how to live without smoking meth or having sex with relatives while maybe rounding up some bail jumpers in their free time. All between commercials, of course. On Saturday night he makes fake moonshine while a fake state revenue agent chases him around with night vision goggles.

Hillbillies make awesome teevee shows. But he sure don't need no help keeping the government off his ass.
