I think the only reason the government cares at all is that he's apparently operating a day camp for kids. Which requires a license, which requires, oh, I don't know, that you meet the conditions of the license.

Either that, or this has something to do with Barack Obama taking all our freedoms. Could be either one.

If this guy wasn't running a commercial enterprise that requires all buildings to be up to code, I might be just as poutraged as subby's headline. Hopefully he can work things out with the state, and make some necessary upgrades.

By "properly marked" does TFA mean the grade markings stamped on stacks of lumber by a lumber mill? If that is so, and it is why they are accusing him of being "not to code", then this, indeed, fairly outrageous. OTOH, there is no real telling from TFA.

Stop teaching that America is the Land of the free, home of the brave.  It's nothing but bullshiat.

We are not the greatest nation on earth, we are not free people.  The long and the short of it is, we're farked.

If you are rich, you may have an ok life, otherwise you are basically a slave.

I too wondered what "properly marked" meant. The rough lumber I buy isn't marked. But it is separated into different racks by A+, A, and B price codes usually.

You know how I know you didn't read the article....

....his outhouses, kitchens, and even the wood he's used to build several structures across the properties aren't up to snuff.

They are fixating on the lumber to stoke the fauxrage. The lumber in an eas thing to get a varience on. The five gallon bucket he's shiatting in, not so much.

Anyway after a minute bit of Googling, it looks like this article , though posted to the Dail Fail today, is something that actually happened in October 2012.

Here's a better article that even shows one of the buildings that is failing.

He did work things out with the state. They are making additions to the code so he shouldn't have to change anything. In reading the article from my previous post, there is a fine line between living primitive and being batshiat crazy, and this guy has fallen towards the batshiat crazy side.

From reading only the headline I assumed it had something to do with him just cutting down trees that he has no legal right to cut down. Property line disputes of that nature can turn into royal financial shiatsorms for whomever is on the wrong end of one.

From the Wall Street Journal article: (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142412788732417890457834085054709 3 268.html?mod=e2tw)

Mr. Furman, the county official, says it is simple. The cabin built and slept in by campers last summer needs a bathroom, fire sprinklers and smoke detectors. "Does anyone sleep there? Then it has to meet the residential code," he says.

Mr. Conway can't sell his $10 Turtle Island T-shirts, either, unless the common area where they are on display has a restroom. As for the old trucks used on the property, parked by a maintenance shed? "That could be considered an automobile garage, but let's not go there," Mr. Furman says.

Watauga County Commissioner Perry Yates said the problem isn't Mr. Conway's primitive methods but rather his less primitive ones, like using an oven range in the outdoor kitchen. "If we are going to teach 1776, let's teach it the way it really was," Mr. Yates says.

The problem isn't the guy's unmarked timber--although they cited him for that too--it's that he's running a summer camp, charging people for it, cooking food, has people camping, using latrines, all the rest of it. Those things have regulations for reasons, and if he wants to do his "wilderness camp" thing, then he has to comply with the regs. He's been lucky so far that his Dan'l Boone-open-air-cookin' fire hasn't burned down the forest or one of his campers hasn't contracted novovirus from an improperly regulated sawdust latrine; regulations are designed to make sure he doesn't have to wait until AFTER he gets his ass sued to fix any problems.

It's nice that everyone here is all gung-ho for no regulations of a gen-u-wine mountain man; for myself, I'd prefer that anyone operating a business had to comply with at least a modicum of standards and practices, thanks.

wooden ladders made from untreated wood rot.
The code inspectors are doing their job. They don't make the rules as they go along during the inspection. Since they saw that the existing codes really didn't fit what this guy was doing, they changed the codes so he would be in compliance. They didn't force him to be compliant. You'll get over it.
I'm pretty sure he's still going to have to replace that collapsing building though.

you both make valid points. TTBOMK all governments use propaganda & control over the masses. those who benefit from owning Daddy Warbucks factories are wealthy powerful people who want to make damn sure there are plenty of willing hands with delusional patriotic eyes willing to do or die. and there are plenty of policies and procedures of all sorts i other countries that may be superior to those applied in the USA. but you roller skate around the world a little bit you find out we spoiled Americans do have it sweet indeed.

So when I open up my amusement park filled with rides that have rusty nails and someone gets injured on the "Tetanus Twister" are you all going to rush to my defense?

No, you're not.

If Eustace wants to offer a service then he needs to bring the facilities up to code.  No one is infringing on his rights to be a backwoods hillbilly.  What they are doing is enforcing codes agreed upon by the general public that denote what is believed to make things safe.

If he wants to take money then he will need to play by the rules.  If not he can shut it all down and just be satisfied being a backwoods hillbilly.
