I don't believe in aliens or bigfoot either, but I still watch the History Channel on occasion, usually when I'm high as fark. Also, one shouldn't underestimate the power of drooling mongoloids; they got Bush elected twice, after all, and that wasn't so long ago.

A show about the Bible on the "History Channel" is equivalent to having a show about fire-breathing dragons on "Animal Planet".

Bob_Laublaw: NewportBarGuy: It's a violent book filled with war and incest. I'd say it's right up their alley!

Maybe Ted Nugent is right for the part after all.

I don't remember reading about King David shiatting himself to get out of fighting, but to be fair it has been a while since I read it.

I'm not joking.

A little like Harvey Keitel in the Last Temptation of Christ, then?

Krymson Tyde: I'm not a believer and I'm watching it. I'm sure there are many others like myself.

Yeah, me neither (on the "believer" thing).

If something is very compelling and has a good production value, most people will watch it regardless of the subject matter.

As for the sex and violence bit, that's dramatic flair. These aren't documentaries, they're dramatizations of historical events. While my own preference is to know in what places a show or movie is historically inaccurate, I understand why certain "artistic licenses" are taken. This phenomenon isn't just relegated to the media we consume today. It has been going on ever since Muktuukaluk told his first story around the camp fire.

Believe in it or not, but the Bible, and Christianity as a whole, has had a major effect on world history. I'd be all for History Channel doing similar productions based on other religions' texts. I'd go so far as to say a comparative religion course should be part of standard high school curriculum.

Old time movie producer Cecil B DeMille made his fortune with Bible epics. He used to say "Give me any two pages of the Bible and I'll give you a picture."
He is also quoted as saying "Every time I make a picture the critics' estimate of American public taste goes down ten percent." and "I make my pictures for people, not for critics."

He had the guy who wrote TFA pegged before he was even born.

I'm pretty sure it's the guy played Michael Oher in "The Blind Side".  IMDB doesn't have a listing for Samson, though.

See, atheists don't believe in anything therefore everything is OK so atheists like to stomp puppies to death and eat kittens and rape babies because if you don't believe in God and Hell then anything you do is OK because there is no punishment and morality can only exist if you are threatened with eternal torture which is the only reason I don't rape and steal and kill all the time although I really really want to.

As a Christian, I'm mad at how horribly done this series is.  Cheesy and lame and inaccurate.  For centuries, Cristianity was responsible for the best art in the world.  Now we're responsible for some of the worst.

I was under the impression that this was going to be HBO/Showtime quality and it would focus on some actual history.

the "history" channel was doing fiction.
the bible is fiction.

the fact that some of the people, places and stories might be based on fact doesnt change that truth.

Of course, the fact that it's about once in every 5-10 years that we're subjected to a new Bible movie is completely ignored here. If there were constant religious shows that consistently drew a huge audience, they might have a point. Otherwise, it's still a risky proposition.

Either way, it's just another excuse to whine and moan about Hollywood these people really need to get a life and quit manufacturing controversy, it's getting old. Hollywood doesn't make enough Jesus movies, it's Hollywood being anti-Jesus, Hollywood makes a Jesus movie, it's Hollywood being anti-Jesus. Lather, rinse, repeat...

Scorsese's fallback profession was the priesthood. I'd say that puts him in the "fervent believer" category.
And aside from Keitel's terrible choice in accents, it was a really good movie, way better than Mel Gibson's Jesus Chainsaw Massacre.

It's funny that a movie that examines the burden of being a savior is reviled by some "Christians," but they'll shell out $400 million in tickets for a movie that raised no thoughts deeper than "Man, Jesus could really take a punch."

Hollywood makes whatever makes money.  if that's Bible epics, that's what they'll make.  If it's torture porn, that's what they'll make.  If they mix the two together, they get The Passion of the Christ.  Whatever makes money.

This is one of the stories that gets recycled every time something in the entertainment industry that is religious and/or conservative succeeds.   This exact story was written for Kirk Cameron's movie about the plucky but abstinent firefighter and for An American Carol, they just never say the light of day.  A little Find and Replace, and it;s updated for the Bible miniseries.

[i.qkme.me image 625x416]

True... Jesus is actually the reason that White people ARE White. Before Jesus came strolling around, there were no White people. Once he died for our sins, then the truly sin-free people in the world were White, and all varying shades just indicate HOW sin-free your ancestors were.

Of course, this means that gingers are the least-sinning people in history. And pre-history.
