If I were king it would be illegal for a place like Enterprise to call itself a city. Do they have city hall meetings on plastic chairs in front of the firehouse?

Captain Aubrey: "Do you see those two Weevils Doctor?  Which would you choose?"
Dr. Maturin: "Neither. There's not a scrap of difference between them. They're the same species of Curculio."
Captain Aubrey: "If you had to choose. If you were forced to make a choice. If there were no other option."
Dr. Maturin: "Well, then, if you're going to push me. I would choose the right-hand weevil. It has significant advantage in both length and breadth."
Captain Aubrey: "There, I have you!...Do you not know that in the Service one must always choose the lesser of two weevils?"

Catholic Irish run a pretty close second behind "uppity Negro" for hated ethnic group in the Deep South. Surprised there wasn't anything thrown at him.

I didn't know Phylis Diller was Irish.

One time there was a crazy guy who would lay in the water around the monument and bathe in it.  He told people that the boll weevil monument was his house and that he lived there.

when was this? i remember when the kids tried to pull the weevil off the statue and ended up breaking it.

for a long time when i was a kid, there was no water in the fountain, because it'd become so normal for people to put soap in the fountain ...

Yeah it's been stolen several times.  I think there's a camera on it now.  Umm...I'm not sure when it happened.  I heard about it at the courthouse not too long ago.  I'm assuming within the past 5 years.

The caption of the photo from your link: The Boll Weevil Monument in Enterprise, Alabama at its original location. A replicas now stands in its place to prevent theft and vandalism.

So this is only a full-scale replica of the original? The actual Boll Weelvil statue is so valuable that they created a duplicate for public display and hid the real one in an undisclosed location?

It's not super small only because we have Fort Rucker. So we get a lot of military in and out.

I really, really just do not get parades in the first place, specifically I don't get what makes otherwise rational people stand there to watch others walk by, then applaud them for successfully walking down a conveniently traffic-free street without dropping dead.

But if I were to get it, I'd think the appeal would be some sort of feeling of community, rather than seeing my weird neighbor in a green hat walking down the block before I resume drinking green beer.

They used to have a really hilarious morning show back in 87-early 90s ... or at least it was, for the time/place. They've moved their offices to Dothan now, though, and WZTZ, which was once quartered in Elba, is now in the old KMX building. I moved off in '02 or so, but get back regularly. Family still lives down there.

Ah ... I moved off in '02, I think it was ... still get down there for the occasional visit w/fam. I miss the place, but it has really grown/changed a lot. Since you're a lawyer, I'll ask: is Barr still a circuit judge? I was a reporter for the Ledger back in the day, and he was acting like a dick to me and to a victim's fam. I actually called him a dick in front of the gallery. Cost me my job ... but it was worth it, I have to say.

2013-03-17 04:46:59 PM
Ha, he's not a circuit judge anymore. He's the drug court judge so I don't see him much. Yikes that's intense. What year did you graduate?

Graduated from EHS in 1990, took a couple of years off, went to Troy ('96). Started at the Ledger in 99, worked there through 02. What about you?

We went through there 2 summers ago specifically for the weevil.  Its not as tall as the postcards from the drug store make it out to be, but it is still cool.

It's a small town, but every Aviator in the Army goes through training at Fort Rucker, which is eight miles to the East. So it's nowhere near as sad, shabby or rudderless as most of the other towns in the Deep South (Opp, anyone?)

It would have been smaller (and more apropos) if they'd used a dwarf.

late to the party, but yeah, Opp is ... something else. they used to have the Rattlesnake Rodeo, yearly. i think it's gone the way of the dodo, though.

a buddy of mine is actually the editor of their weekly paper, and loves the place. i've never seen the appeal. Geneva, almost directly south of Enterprise, is pretty bad, too.
