Phil Hartman is under-rated? The list even mentions that Phil overshadowed Nora Dunn...

I miss Nora Dunn. I thought she was funny. She became a minor feminist martyr for not wanting to appear on the show with Andrew Dice Clay. Too bad the Tina Fey era was way after her time.

Loved the modeling talkshow bit about drooling on the catwalk ...

Oh and don't forget Rich Hall from the season Lorne Michaels doomed to limbo. The short movie with the magic shoes, him being stuck photos as the weirdo hanging out at the White House, he was fun.

Ahh, poor Tim Meadows, can't even catch a break on this list and wound up number 3.

He was responsible for one of the biggest laughs I've ever had from SNL. The Skit where he plays O.J. after the the trial and uses the telestrator to spell out I did it accidentally.

Hartman under rated? Arguably one of the top 3 cast members of all time.

Darrell Hammond.

HaywoodJablonski: Kevin Nealon?

I would say anyone that has hosted Weekend Update shouldn't be referred to as under-rated. Though I do prefer Nealon's deadpan style  (which feels more like a genuine newscaster) over the more obvious "We are telling a JOKE!" style of pretty much everyone else who has hosted the segment.

Jan Hooks is hilarious.

I always liked Melanie Hutsel too. She completely disappeared after leaving the show.

Go ask Jon Lovitz what he thought of Nora Dunn. Apparently she was kind of a robo-biatch.

That got me thinking, I'll bet Hartman appeared in way more skits than any other cast member during his run, just because he was so versatile. Not underrated. Maybe he's included because he didn't have any huge recurring skits?

Norm? At the time, all he really did was WU, and people either loved or hated him, there was no in-between.

I'll take any excuse to post Norm sabotaging a Conan interview, though.

Playing Burt Reynolds on Celebrity Jeopardy got him some recurring screentime, too.

I wonder what their definition of "underrated" is. Phil Hartman?

2013-03-17 10:44:59 AM
I don't know if Norm McDonald is "underrated", but he definitely is one of the all time greats.  I get that a lot of people don't like him - that's part of his appeal.  I think Norm has always been more about making himself laugh than anyone else. It's almost as if he's afraid to make it in the industry.

2013-03-17 10:46:40 AM
Those are good players, but WTF ? Tim Meadows ? The guy was a rock !  SNL floundered around year after year like a strangled corpse while Meadows provided consistency, both in humor and acting...similar to Hartman.

TheLopper: I think Chris Parnell is criminally underrated.

I know his character is deliberately over the top, but I love Dr. Spaceman.

oryx: I wonder what their definition of "underrated" is. Phil Hartman?

their weak definition seemed to be that he wasn't nearly as big (in terms of recurring characters, movies, etc.) as Mike Myers, Tina Fey, Eddie Murphy, etc. I can sort of agree on those terms, except Phil is pretty universally seen as being one of the best castmembers the show had.

The Sweeney Sisters were a crappy imitation of Bill Murray imitating a lounge act.

I thought he was hot when he was younger, but I got the impression he might have drug issues which is a huge turn-off. I dunno, I saw him on David Letterman or some show like that and he seemed to be tripping. Maybe it was just a one-time deal.

eh, maybe she felt like she had to be one in that era. SNL might've been a really sexist setting at the time. I remember Phil Hartman kind of getting out of hand with molesting Jan Hooks when he was playing Ted Kennedy, it was like uh dude ... dial it back to 7.

\RIP Phil I still love ya

Aside from Portlandia, no, not really. There's nothing really spectacular about him on SNL.

The article is right about Nasim Petrad. It almost seems like she got more screentime as a featured player than she does now. Which is too bad as she can be very funny.

'Underappreciated'? By whom?

Sweeny wasn't very good and the rest - except for Jan Hooks who was awesome - all got more than their fair share of acclaim.

WTF is this? Another EW article?

Rich Hall kicked ass on Not Necessarily the News, but he never did find his way on SNL. It's a tough environment due to the condensed production schedule, and I've seen it happen with other talented folks who did better elsewhere - Mark McKinney, Chris Elliott, Janeane Garofalo, and Sarah Silverman come to mind.

I think maybe his laid-back style just wasn't a great fit for the show.

I was going to ask just how many utterly forgettable, token, used as a straight man, and just basically there to keep the cast from looking lily white, minus of course the black male superstar, the ediie murphy or tim meadows female black actresses they've had.
