Below is a message from his wife:

"On Superbowl Sunday, Blackshadow came down with what we assumed was your garden variety flu. By Thursday he was so sick that I had to call the paramedics; he was admitted to the ICU that night; at that time they knew he had pneumonia, but further tests revealed that he had a massive MRSA infection in his bloodstream and lungs. Within 24 hours he was intubated and sedated. He went into septic shock and I almost lost him for than once; it took a week and a half just to get him stabilized. He spent nearly a month in ICU and has been slowly recovering for the past 3 weeks. The infection is gone but the damage it's done is going to take a lot of work to recover from. He IS going to recover, thank God, but we've got a long way to go yet.

At this point I'm guessing that we're going to be facing around $5,000 to cover what the insurance won't - and Blackshadow's only receiving about half what he usually earns while he's on Disability. Any amount that can be gathered through a fundraiser would be a blessing. Thank you so much."

For transparency, while I might be in charge of this fundraiser, Sir Cumference the Flatulent, Roman Fyseek, and Blackshadow's wife have access to the email and the PayPal and email account.

For those of you who don't know, here is Vincent Blackshadow's Fark user profile.

Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no... damn and a half.  He's a great guy, and I just got an icy cold pit in my stomach reading that headline.

Get well soon, v_b, and best wishes to all-a-y'all out there.

He IS on the road to recovery at this point. He spoke for the first time in a month just a couple days ago, and things are looking up.

2013-03-16 03:53:52 PM
This guy was super-helpful to me when I first came to LA to build my hearse. I really hope he comes out of this okay.

I just read the first thing you posted in this thread.  *whew*  I'm relieved that he's making progress, anyways.

is paypal the only way?

2013-03-16 04:02:03 PM
At the moment, yes, PayPal is the only way. I figured that since everyone on this site has PayPal, it'd be the easiest way to go. I know...

The PayPal account will be linked directly to Blackshadow's bank account, to keep things easy.

:(  Made me sad

I'm not quite in the best financial position right now, but I'll donate what I can.  Every little bit helps, right?

...I've never done this before, but when sending money, I click the personal tab and..living expenses?  I know how much of a prick Paypal can be in this situation, so I'm not sure what button to select

2013-03-16 04:38:14 PM
Poor guy has been laid low since THE SUPERBOWL ?

I at least hope he didn't bet on the 9ers

He's not one I've had much chance to know well but I really enjoy seeing him on Fark. My thoughts and well wishes for him and his family.

Yes, please do repost it.  I have some mad money coming in next week that I'll gladly send.

2013-03-16 04:44:57 PM
I will definitely be reposting over the next few days, to catch AM and PM crews, as well as weekday folks.

Also, if you can earmark the donation as a gift, I think PayPal is a little less of a dick. Otherwise, go with what sounds best to you.

2013-03-16 04:46:27 PM
I'd wondered what was going on with him. That's a good dude, right there.

Living expense.

True dat.

...after a little more research, it appears that marking your donation as "gift" or "personal" (rather than purchase) are the least painful options PayPal will allow.

If you choose personal and gift and use a checking account (or positive paypal balance) there is no fee.

Thank you guys very much.

Please note that any amount is appreciated, and it isn't like medical bills magically disappear or stop arriving with any sort of quickness - so if you can't give anything until payday/next month, that'll be fine, too.

Also, we're going green in a bit! \o/

GREEN!!!!!

Alright - for folks new to the thread - Blackshadow is on the road to recovery, and able to speak for the first time in over a month (as of a couple days ago). If you can make a donation (small, large - whatever you might be able to afford), please mark it "gift" or "personal" to avoid PayPal's most painful fees.

Also, I just gave Blackshadow's wife an update on the total so far (was $750 at the time), and this is her response:

"I just told Blackshadow; he said, and I quote, 'Holy shiat! I love those guys.' Thank you so much! "

2013-03-16 05:32:15 PM
On the 1st I will throw $50 your way

But how did a motorcycle catch a MRSA infection?

not trying to be a dick but who? I don' t know the name and the Google's only seem to turn up stuff about motorbikes. Is he a farker? If so then the headline should probably say that rather than fark favourite (whatever that means). With that being said I hope that Mr Blackshadow makes a full recovery and wish he and his family all the best.

MRSA is a Staph infection that resists drug treatment. You can lose limbs from it. Very, very ugly.

Can't do a damn thing right now, can barely manage my own family through the next week or so.

But as you mentioned, bills don't evaporate. And I have MRSA colonized on me, I just got over my 5th abscess in the last 12 months, so I have some idea of how awful it can get. It was on my gums, which made me terrified of it getting into my bloodstream if it ruptured inside my mouth. I see from this story that I was right to worry.

I'll kick something his way at the end of the month, when I can. Because MRSA sucks.

sevente: not trying to be a dick but who? I don' t know the name and the Google's only seem to turn up stuff about motorbikes. Is he a farker? If so then the headline should probably say that rather than fark favourite (whatever that means). Speaking of which, without knowing who this person is the headline doesn't really elicit much sympathy to donate.

With that being said I hope that Mr Blackshadow makes a full recovery and wish he and his family all the best.

I have to agree with sevente here. My initial reaction to beggars that demand money is usually not favorable. But since I had BETTER give like there is no tomorrow, I'll see what I can do.

Witchydiva: GREEN!!!!!

I'll give what i can. After dealing with providing hospice care for a friend last year to save costs I've seen too many close friends get wiped out financially due to illness and accident. Cancer is an unkind mistress.

Why do the people of "the greatest country on earth" have to resort to charity when they get sick? Other developed countries have figured out how to get people the care the need without having to go bankrupt or plead help to survive.

If you've opposed single payer healthcare not only are you incapable of doing the math vs our current costly system but you're an asshole for causing unnecessary suffering and destruction of families through crushing healthcare debt.

Then I think I figured it out, WE are all one big dysfunctional family. We call each other names and get in our little fights but when the chips are down, we have each other's backs."

Wait...*my* v_b? Oh wow, I'm so sorry to just be hearing of this now. We had a great conversation at a SoCal Fark party back in the day - in his line of work, he had some fascinating insights into current events.

He always had nice things to say and cracked me up countless times on TF.

Certified 100% genuine good cool guy, though I kinda do want his stuff. (Valentino's calling card? Hell yeah!)

So glad he's on the road to recovery...the world would be much duller without him. I'll spread the word tonight and donate when I get back tomorrow.

Hugs to you and the boys, Mrs. v_b - Mike always spoke with the greatest contentment and love about his amazing wife and kids...I know your strength is what got him through this. When that bastard's up and around again, tell him he owes me a girl drink. :)

I agree with this sentiment as well. We don't have to even really know each other or interact at all for us to care about each other. I don't remember ever coming across Vincent Blackshadow, but I'm giving what I can to help you folks out. Best wishes and I hope he has a speedy recovery.

2013-03-16 07:55:52 PM

GBmanNC: Sucks to here. Hope to see him back posting soon.

And any medical experts wanna comment on how you catch something scary like this?

A third of people in the developed world carry Staph (Staphylococcus aureus) in their nose, armpit or groin... methicillin-resistant Staph aureus (MRSA) makes up a good portion of that. We have an ongoing epidemic in this country of a particular clone of MRSA that is rather virulent.

We still don't understand everything about Staph and how it makes people sick. It tends to take advantage of any break down in host immune defense, or breakdown in the skin barrier, to cause disease. The current epidemic clone is very good at making healthy people very sick when it becomes invasive.

Best thing to do for yourself is practice good hand hygiene and wash any cuts or scrapes that you have and keep them covered when you're out and about. CDC has some info here:  http://www.cdc.gov/mrsa/prevent/personal.html

/full disclosure: Staph/MRSA is my life

After copying and pasting that email address, then erasing it and typing it in manually, Paypal still wouldn't accept it.  I had to log out altogether and start over from scratch.

Any way to turn the Fark filter off just for that one address at the top of the thread?  I'm sure I won't be the only person who makes that mistake.

OK so he is a farker, good to know. That sucks as it sounds like it's a very serious and debilitating illness and he obviously means a great deal to a lot of farkers here.

I still think it would be worthwhile mentioning that he is a farker in the headline - I mean i consider myself a part of the large and weird fark community and have honestly never come across the guy. I think putting that in the headline and a link to his profile in a sticky at the top of thread would be useful to other farkers in the same boat as me - it can't hurt and IMHO would be more likely to attract donations from other farkers who don't necessarily know him.

My doctor wrote my sulfameth prescription with refills on it, and that paid off this time - as soon as I woke up with a puffy cheek line, I felt around the jaw for a second, went "yep, MRSA", called CVS immediately and got on antibiotics before calling my doctor. Took three the first day to flood my system. And being able to act that quickly is probably what saved me from having to get some obnoxious maxillofacial surgery that I can't afford, because my doctor knew that I could self-diagnose an abscess and wanted me to be able to act quickly if/when it happened again.

But even with all that, for the first few days before the antibiotics start to actually reverse the infection, it's a pretty miserable sickness.

I'm glad you're feeling better, Bananadragon. I hope the MRSA leaves you alone. I'm particularly interested in what makes the current clone so successful and so virulent, and in studying patients with recurrent infections... and yes I wash my hands a ton, especially at work. :)

biohazard76: The Bananadragon:
My doctor wrote my sulfameth prescription with refills on it, and that paid off this time - as soon as I woke up with a puffy cheek line, I felt around the jaw for a second, went "yep, MRSA", called CVS immediately and got on antibiotics before calling my doctor. Took three the first day to flood my system. And being able to act that quickly is probably what saved me from having to get some obnoxious maxillofacial surgery that I can't afford, because my doctor knew that I could self-diagnose an abscess and wanted me to be able to act quickly if/when it happened again.

I'm glad you're feeling better, Bananadragon. I hope the MRSA leaves you alone. I'm particularly interested in what makes the current clone so successful and so virulent, and in studying patients with recurrent infections... and yes I wash my hands a ton, especially at work. :)

Thank you, Bathia_Mapes... was an unexpected surprise!

I have no money to spare, sadly, though I'm confident the  Fark brigade will come through.  I have some health issues and no insurance, which isn't uncommon these days.  Vincent seems like a guy everyone would want to have a beer with - well, maybe not a Mormon, or Baptist, or a Muslim, or . . . anyway, he seems like a good guy, and I'm very glad he's on the mend.  I'll have to Farkie him as "Guy I want to have a beer with" look for him in threads.

Way to live on the edge, dude!

Here's the new plan though:

Step one: RECOVER
Step two: Beer
Step three: ?
Step four: MORE BEER

Got it? Cool. Glad your improving, it's great to hear.

I haven't been on TF much lately, but Vincent
is a particularly, good friend of mine. I've met him in person and would like to help.

I had the same infection in January 2012. Never sick a day in my life before.  I was in a coma for 22 days and in the hospital for 2 months. During the first week that I was sick my wife was told one evening to make funeral arrangements for me. My 2 doctors saved my life although they expected to bury me.  I made it. I was home in a hospital bed, on IV  antibiotics for months.  I didn't really start to get better until September. My cognition was screwed up for a long while.

It cost over $500K all but $7,500 covered by insurance.

If Mrs. Blackshadow would care to call me I, and my wife would be available to give insight as to what to expect. My wife also saved my life by being there all the time.It will not be easy, the recovery will be long.

I walked a mile today, with a cane. First time over a mile Last March I couldn't walk 10 feet.

Call us. We can help.

biohazard76: GBmanNC: Sucks to here.

/full disclosure: Staph/MRSA is my life
//pray I get my grant funding...
///hope Mr.VB makes a full recovery...

Yikes, indeed thank monkeys VB is on the way back.  Dealt with MRSA skin abcesses myself on an obnoxious and irregular basis, and damn do they A: come right the hell out of nowhere, and B: aren't fun to deal with for the penecillin allergic world.  Seriously folks, if you find yourself with ANY sort of visible infection that's seriously painful or obviously full of gunk, get your arse into the doctor YESTERDAY.  I'm living with a substantially worsened pain condition because I waited like a jackass, so don't be like me.

/Surprisingly enough, major infections don't make nerve diseases like RSD happy!  Who'da thought huh?  Bungled abcess removal really pisses RSD off.
//I repeat - DO NOT BE A DUMBSHIAT LIKE ME - if you even THINK something is going way wrong like that, you can go to the hospital NP (assuming ability to pay/insurance of course.)  They regard this to be a serious damn thing too - you will not get GOMERed by any sane medical team.  They'll take samples, confirm what's wrong, and get you the hell on the anti-biotic storm you need.  DO SO.

It is horrible what this MRSA is doing.  I never knew it was such a big problem.  In the hospital it is always good to take those Lysol wipes in and wipe everything down, have someone do it for you if you can. And make sure the nurses, even the dumb belligerent ones, wash their hands.

Wow, hope all you people who have been afflicted with it get well soon.

We worry about superflus and such (not without good cause), but I wonder if we won't suffer the death of a thousand cuts as various bacteria become resistant, and we're hit by many different things over a short span of time. GBmanNC: Sucks to here. Hope to see him back posting soon.

And any medical experts wanna comment on how you catch something scary like this?

I'm not a medical expert, but I have had two bouts of MRSA. Not nearly as bad as this account, but it was scary how fast it got bad.  Started with a little scratch on my lip, doubled to 3mm in circumference within a few hours, and became this horrible, infected mess of a sore about the size of a penny in just one day.

Stupid doctor told me I had a cold sore and prescribed me Valtrex and when it doubled again in size, he accused me of not taking the med.  I got lucky and was seen by a different doctor the third visit, but by then it was super gag-inducingly gross and I missed a ton of work.  Second doctor swabbed it, sent it out, and it came back as MRSA.

I feel lucky that I escaped with minimal scarring.  I can't donate right now, but will chip some in first week in April.  Best wishes to the gentleman and I hope he has a speedy recovery from here on out.

Then I think I figured it out, WE are all one big dysfunctional family. We call each other names and get in our little fights but when the chips are down, we have each other's backs."

If you want to donate without having to set up a PayPal account, this may work -- copy & paste this URL into your favorite browser:

http://paypal.com/xclick/business=

and add the fundraiser e-mail address to the end before you hit Enter.  You should get a payment form that will allow you to skip the account setup.

If somebody on the receiving end can verify that 1) the $25 I sent this way from my orion-com.com address showed up, and 2) there don't appear to be weird fund holds on it, this may be a workable solution for all the other non-PayPal'ers out there.

May, 2012. Down 50 pounds. Pissing in a jar. I'm better now.

I left you were so ill. I'm so fecking happy to see your updates.

vegaswench: smells_like_meat: I walked a mile today, with a cane. First time over a mile Last March I couldn't walk 10 feet.

I thought of you when I read this thread.  I am glad you are feeling better.  Mr. Wench is in some medical straits himself lately (though nothing as serious as MRSA, thankfully) and I can't give enough credit to your wife, GG, and Mrs. V.B. and others in their situation who are supporting their spouses while they are ill.

We do the best we can and remember that some days courage is just being willing to wake up the next day. Then we look back and remember the days where sleep was a luxury and throwing the bedpan will just make something else for you to clean up.  Then you just face you are not in control of anything but your reaction time improves.

God bless Mrs V_B. it's a humbling but

Due to my own medical issues, I can't give anything now, but after my knee heals up from surgery and I make real paychecks again, I will be happy to send some $$ to a fellow farker in need.

Congrats on the recovery, smells_like_meat! You had us all scared there for awhile. Modern medicine is pretty damn amazing when it works. E's new knee allowed her to walk 3 miles the other day while showing her friend around town. I'm so proud of her! It's a real milestone.

Vegaswench I'm sorry to hear about your hubs, hope everything's okay.

Witchydiva: Below is a message from his wife:

I feel for you. I really do. But as someone who pays $700 a month in medical bills and can't even make ends meet... I can't even donate the change in my couch, because I have several late bills of my own.

$5,000 in the grand scheme of things isn't that bad, if you can make payments over a long period of time.

You can even talk them down if you pay in cash- my mother had an uninsured appendectomy and I talked them down from $19,000 to $8,000 if she paid in full that day.

That being said, I wish I could help, and I'm sorry I can't, but I hope recovery is swift and you have everything you need going forward. Best of luck!

Yo Fundraiser Organizer person, how hard is that $5K for the hospital? For instance, can you go down to the Finance dept at the hospital and negotiate, say you got $3500 in cold hard cash that you can pay RIGHT NOW instead of going onto a payment plan? If that's an option, go for it and you can keep any extraneous cash-ola.

Yes- and trust me, hospitals are like collection companies. They'd much rather have 60% for sure RIGHT NOW than possibly none if you default.

My trouble is I need ongoing care from a physician, not a hospital, so that won't fly for me. I wish it did.

The hospitals and doctors made many serious billing mistakes (mostly in their favor, go figure). They hope that you won't notice and just pay up. When you're dealing with an ill spouse its particularity difficult as I'm sure gambitsgirl remembers.

It would seem the the initial bills for V_B hospitalization are just now showing up and a little bit of freaking out is going on, particularly if you've never dealt with this before. My advice is to take a deep breath, put the bills aside, and focus on getting V_B well. If you ignore them for a while two good things happen: one your health care provider will slap the wrist of anyone who is overcharging, two, you buy time to think and go through the bills at your leisure. Are any out of network charges included in the bills? These are usually outrageous. Inform them that you have no obligation to pay out of net as the hospital was informed of your insurance carrier upon admission. Its the out of nets responsibility to ask. Those bills always get reduced to net levels. Often 90% or more. Are there any charges that you simply don't know what they are talking about? While in the extreme care facility for two months I was charged $200 a day by visits from a Dr. that I had never heard of. I informed my health care provider, they investigated, and it was removed.

For the most part your health care provider is your friend. If approached in a calm, friendly, business like manner most of them are glad to help straighten things out. This would best be done when V_B is well on the road to recovery. Don't be afraid to sit on the bills for a while. Nobody involved is going to threaten you or do bad things while your husbands sick.

Feel free to email me with any specific questions.

Good luck.

BTW, long term payment plans can be worked out for bills that really are your responsibility. Real long term. Like years. Everyone involved is human and knows how tough it is to come up with $$$. Agree on a schedule and keep it. After surgery in 2007, my wife paid off about $25K in 2010. Everyone was happ and there were no interest charges.

Calm and businesslike is the key.

For the record, health insurance and billing claims has been my field for a decade. EIP, for you or V_B. I can help sort out bills, ESP if the ins is contracted and it's case rate vs. percentage for the codes used to bill. That's how I can help since I am penniless.

I floated the system for 4 years till we had $100 left to live on with him sick and a 7 & 9 year old. But walked away fairly clean. Broken but clean.

After years of endless fighting, United Healthcare assigned us a personal representative to advocate for us. I mean I got charged for ambulance due to "out of network"?!?!?? 911 is 911 asstards. After 2 years of that crap I snapped on them and screamed logic into the phone repeatedly). They were great.

Then I dealt with Va which is why I have dark humor.

Then social security.

(va and ss both asked for the first and only check we got back cause he only lived 25 of 31 days in October. No really. No shiat).

The ONLY way you can get the bill for an ambulance ride is if the treating physician doesn't deem it an emergency. Even if it's an out of area ambulance ride (which means it was outside of 30 miles from your primary care physician) its bizarre to not have it covered. I can check on the billing rules if you like- now you've got me curious.

Oh I won. That was at the 2-year point where they auto kick back all bills. When they really realize how much this shiat gonna cost them.

It was overturned. I was on a rampage. I got an advocate. They quit getting Enraged Woman calls. It all worked. But for a while it was daunting.

Good for you, and I'm sorry for your loss. I can relate- though no ambulance would have saved mine- DOA. I did get a bill from the tow yard that housed the scrap metal he died on for six months. I screamed at them too and they expediently made it disappear.

Me though- luckily I only have four more months of the $700 a month med bills, though I can't be sure it'll be resolved by then. The light at the end of the tunnel is what keeps me going even though I'm exhausted trying to keep up.

I'm going to remember this when/if dad gets well, because  from what I saw in the last week, his wife has no chance of handling the finances correctly for a long time depending on what happens... She's great at his bedside, but show her a stack of bills and she melts into a puddle...

EIP. All I have to do is verify who the insurance company is, get a copy of the UBO4, and get a schedule of benefits to confirm everything was billed correctly. 2 of 3 I can do from work, believe it or not.

Srsly, if ANYONE feels they've been screwed by the insurance, I may be able to help you. Ins companies aren't evil, but people make mistakes, and to patients who have no idea how to read an EOB, it can be daunting.

Lsherm: Kensey: If you want to donate without having to set up a PayPal account, this may work -- copy & paste this URL into your favorite browser:

http://paypal.com/xclick/business=

and add the fundraiser e-mail address to the end before you hit Enter.

(Thanks modmins for nuking the screwed-up link I posted earlier)

Everything about that smells like a scam....

Nope, not a scam (check my profile, I've been a Farker for a LONG time), but PayPal really REALLY wants you to sign up for an account through the normal payment channels, and this apparently bypasses that.  (Paypal better step up their game though or services like ChipIn will start eating their lunch...)

Yes. The key is to relax (as much as you can) and take charge.

Bills aren't generated by a machine. They're generated by coders who input what was done, number of days inpatient stay (per diem is how a lot of hospital claims are paid) DRG's (diagnosis related groupers- average out the cost of care for that DX and that's what they charge) and procedure codes. Then we as an insurance company get the bill and pay according to contract- or if non par, reasonable and customary rates. Or if it's an HMO, sometimes payment is the responsibility of the medical group itself and not the plan.

Point is, it's AAALLLLL people. You can't talk to the coders or billers or claims people usually, but the cust service people should certainly be versed in 1500's and UB04's (doctor's fee claims and inpatient/facility claims). They can tell if, oops, the coder put down that you had radiology (a 7XXXX code) instead of a blood draw (8XXXX code).

And with that... I'll stop speaking what probably feels like Cantonese to a non-ins person.

/it's sad that this is how I nerd out
//and I love it

gambitsgirl: smells_like_meat: gambitsgirl: There is no such thing as extra money as long as V_B is on disability and this idea is stellar.

Good luck.

OMG SO MUCH THIS!!!! My rule was never pay before the 3rd notice. They WILL balance bill you.

And get an itemized list. Bastards tried to charge me $150 for crutches. I said F that and drove (with a broken foot) to good will and bought some for $5.

It probably has to do with the fees being taken out of the balance rather than being covered by the donor. Or perhaps an international donation, those can get weird.

Witchydiva: think any and all well-wishes, educated advice, love, snark, et al. are welcome. Not everyone has spare funds (obviously, given the topic of this thread). I'm a bit skint right now, myself. I get it. We give what we can, and at least folks in this thread know that whatever they give is appreciated.

Any update for maybe snail-mailing something  Witchydiva? I'm unable to use PayPal. EIP if you don't want to blast a mailing address in the thread. V_B is one of the guys in white hats in my book.

...as a sort of macabre aside, I'm really glad to be able to see this kind of love shown for one of our own without the person having to earn Beyond Fark status (Arelas, Bufu, Carl, Nasser, etc).

Witchydiva: kiwimoogle84: techmom: kiwimoogle84: FishWife: All of you wonderful, amazing folks are making V_B and I cry, but in a good way.  You all ROCK.  We can't ever thank you enough for helping us; your willingness to jump in without hesitation is, well, nothing less than awesome.  Mike is improving every day; probably another couple of weeks before I can spring him from the hospital, but if his determination (read: stubborn streak) has anything to do with it, it will be sooner rather than later.  THANK YOU ALL, FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART.

CONTACT ME AS SOON AS YOU SEE THE BILL. Not kidding. If ANYTHING is out of sorts, you can go as far as calling your insurance company on and telling them I'm authorized to speak on your behalf. I've done it for another Farkette and I saved her $3800 because someone calculated her deductible wrong.

If I come into any money, some is going your way.

I can't even imagine how good/relieved an offer like this would make me feel. Expert advice = priceless.

It's what I do. No one- literally NO ONE- unless they work in the industry, have any idea what DOFR, a DRG, or reasonable and customary rates even mean. Shoot, some people I work with have a hard time with it. If you don't know exactly what your insurance is doing, it's hard to fight them when you don't have all the information.

I said above but the "shame on you farkers" comment was deleted (thankfully, I'll admit) I have no money, but this is what I can offer. Thanks for the vote of confidence. :)

V_B any better today? Inquiring minds, as they verify insurance coverage for labor and delivery claims, want to know...

UPDATE ON V_B:
"After more than a month (February 7th, to be exact), Blackshadow is breathing on his own! The trache tube will come out tomorrow. His blood pressure is good and steady; now, the physical therapy begins in earnest. Hopefully we can get him outside to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine for a little bit this week."

The air will never have tasted so sweet. Wonderful news VB&J ;-)

I spent a week in the hospital getting IV antibiotics last year.  The third one worked.  You did not need to one-up me.

Not sure if serious.jpg

But

The reason is they have regular course antibiotics they throw at crap first. Then they ramp it up. Clyndimiacin is what got my son's MRSA (although with these drugs come dangers). Depending in the strain that drug might not work. These are high test drugs and are really not used often. The more we throw at them the more they mutate.

Witchydiva: It was the fee PayPal took out of a $10 donation that wasn't marked "Personal" or "Gift".
Though I'd laugh if someone sent an odd number to to be funny. :)

I'm attempting to now and I keep getting prompted to see if I'm willing to tack on the fee to my personal gift. Am I doing it wrong or is it that most people are just taking care of the fee on their own? It's not a ton and I'll cover it if that's just how it goes, I'd simply rather not give Paypal anything if I can avoid it.

(to avoid any farksnark: yes, I'm on the Personal tab, with 'Gift' radio button selected)

PayPal takes a fee either way - either you can pay it, or it will be deducted from the amount you give before it hits the receiving account.

I feel the same way about PP, but couldn't think of a more convenient way to organise this thing (for a variety of reasons). :/

It's because I was only set up to transfer referencing a card. I'm adding a bank account to transfer directly from and I hope this will resolve the issue. Maybe that'll be useful for someone hoping to avoid a fee.

Anyway, good on ya for doing this, good on ya folks that are contributing (be it in advice, funds, etc), and I hope for the best possible recovery, TFer_I_dunno_but_have_a_feeling_I'd_have_a_blast_hanging_out_with.

You have an awfully long road ahead of you. Accept help if you need it, ask for help when you need it, and most of all remember that you WILL get better. Never doubt that.

Well, if you go to TotalFark you can see ALL the link submissions for the Main Page and for the other tabs. You can sort them by 'Commented' and have a look at what other TFers/TFettes are talking about, before it hits the main page.

And if you like that, there's TotalFark Discussion (TFD). Like a big chatroom... or high school. Sometimes more like kindergarten.

:)

You are very welcome. I won't make you a Welcome thread to TFD though - that'd just be mean. ;)

You are so very sweet, I hope you know that :) Big difference between Mike's and my medical bills is that mine emerged from a happy event. Good news, everybody! We've broken the $5,000 threshold! You guys are incredible, and humble me.

So here is where we stand at the moment: we've covered the immediate financial goal. He is on disability, which means he isn't earning a full paycheck, and will be a long time in difficult recovery. His trache tube will come out tomorrow, and hopefully he'll be able to go outside in the sun for the first time since he was admitted to the hospital on February 7.

Can the Fark community continue this drive, and raise some extra cash to cover the full deductible, as well as hopefully some of the out-of-pocket stuff (as smells_like_meat said, "although the insurance says $7,500 deductible, that our out of pocket was over $30K for various reasons")?

All else fails, I am absolutely convinced that if we happen to raise more than they need (HAH!), v_b would be more than happy to repay folks any leftover money with a beer or two!

That's almost impossible and has to be an error unless they were out of network, or the plan had no maximum out of pocket limits. Or unless the bills surpassed the annual cap for coverage, which it is rare to surpass.

Hey Farkers- listen up. This pertains to V_B's medical bills, if you want to know what he might expect to pay.

$7500 deductible is a large one, and if you have a deductible, that means you have a PPO and will have some coinsurance to go along with it. Sometimes you will know how much- like if your plan is actually called Aetna 80/20, etc. And- the 20% will apply ONLY AFTER THE INSURANCE COMPANY HAS BILLED. The actually itemized statements WILL BE astronomical. Contracted hospitals can bill a million dollars, but Aetna's contract with them says they'll only be paid $900 for that surgery they charged $23,000 for.

WHAT THIS MEANS-

Let's say V_B's total bill for his inpatient stay is $500,000. The insurance company gets paid per day, so, $4,500 per day. For 30 days, this adds up to $135,000. That means Sutter Hospital (it's where I work, so I'm using it as an example) will write off $350,000. NOW you owe your 20%. 20% of $135,000 equals $27,000.

But don't panic.

Most insurance plans have a maximum out of pocket you can pay per calendar year. Which means- you hit your $7,500 deductible, the insurance calculates the contracted rates, they pay 80%, you owe 20%, UP TO your out of pocket maximum. It's usually about five or ten grand.

YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO PAY MORE THAN THIS IN A CALENDAR YEAR UNLESS YOUR PLAN DOES NOT HAVE A SPECIFIED OPMX.

I really hope this helps you understand about what you might be facing. And this helps the Fark community know about how much more you guys have to pay.

/always here to help
//the friendly neighborhood insurance lady
/...I'd so rather be spiderman

I meant to say the hospital will be paid per day.

I need coffee.

We can do this. I need a couple of days to reconcile some things, but I'm pretty certain I'll be able to do more.

If smells_like_meat is still fighting with them, he needs to e-mail me. I need to look at his schedule of benefits. Something went wrong somewhere. And all I need is his ins carrier and ID number to sort out basically everything. The benefits of having employer/provider logins for every insurance website known to man. :)

Hey Fish_Wife- e-mail me your insurance info. I'm sure by now you must have it practicaly memorized. I can verify it in five minutes. I can even give you an estimate of how much you'll expect to pay since I expect the hospital has already done some partial billing. I'm not supposed to technically, but who DOESN'T fudge their taxes occasionally?

Franko: Why why why won't you people adopt universal (single payer) healthcare?  "Relying on the generosity of others" is not a health plan.

Because rich white people don't want services going to poor brown people.

They would rather have treatment resistant diseases flourish or huge numbers of people held back into poverty instead of giving free care to others to contain the spread of disease and suffering.

It reduces the competition for resources.

I agree. I claimed 32K legit off taxes as out of pocket a year. Home supplies. Latex gloves. Bed pads. Home modification. Hopefully his won't be terminal critical care but it's amazing what "non essential" stuff is essential.

Uh, I'm against it because hospitals will be paid like medicare and medical ALREADY ARE paying them, and make pennies on the ten dollars for each claim. Which will reduce quality of care. Also, my job field goes kaput. I have a personal vested interest here. The trouble is, as it stands now, "poor" people, as you put it, have better health care than I do. If I SNEEZE WRONG, I'll have so many medical bills I'll be forced to find a street corner to pay them all. But that's because my employer paid benefits blow nads.

I'm against it because a million jobs will be gone, and because then it'd take me six months to even get one appt to see the doctor I see regularly now. People already use the ER like a doctor's office, and it'll only get worse if this is allowed to continue. I see the ins and outs that most people don't. We need cafeteria style insurance with lots of different plans because not everyone's needs are the same. Oh, and the job thing.

Thanks but everything went fine. Our out of pocket was covered for billed expenses past our $7,500 maximum. I think my total bill was $750,000 or so.

The $30K total is an estimate for other not covered expenses particular to us. The treatment straddled the calender year so I was liable for  $7,500 twice. Boarding the dogs. Non generic medications. Meals, travel, etc. etc. The in home nurse's screw up with the out of net lab for weekly blood work was $3K alone.

After 24/7 2 years at home I had to get CNAs in. At first once a week and then eventually twice. By the time he died I had them a few nights as he was awake almost all day and night and I was running low on life myself. The CNAs were not covered at all. There are a few grants to help. We're talking feeding tube and digestive aids and laxatives and waste products and bandages and supplies and.... Infinity.

VB is in my prayers that his home recovery is smoother and J won't have to reach this level. Remember mine was the opposite of healing so it just incurred more and more and more.

/here's hoping
// my condition was just as bad. My first request was to change it to "He's a farmer". So there's that

This has had me giggling like a schoolgirl for the past 20 minutes, and I don't know why.

Thank you.

1000:1 Drew didn't even notice the autocorrect at the time and just read farker.

My email this morning started with me stumbling out and sitting on my kid on the couch and pondering WHY the kid was there.

My apologies, I followed your story about your husband back in the day (under a different fark handle) so you've been a favorite for a long time.  I had a picture in my head of you insisting "FARMER!  He's a FARMER!  We should DO something!" Then I pictured Drew thinking "Oh, he's a FOREIGNER!" and then promptly not knowing what the hell you were talking about, but deciding that Fark was going balls-out regardless, because beer.

It was a great mental image, even if it didn't really play out that way.

If only I could do that while working 40 hours a week through a high risk pregnancy... I WISH I could- or at least find a job with better pay and benefits. My doctor doesn't even want me working AT ALL. But despite her attempts to put me on bed rest (three threatened miscarriages so far) for me not to work would condemn Mr. Kiwi and I to absolute poverty.

I take it as easy as I can, and shelling out advice over the Internet doesn't put any strain on me at all, so that's why I'm here. Maybe I should start a business where I advocate for individuals- they pay me thirty bucks to scan their claims or something.

I just don't have the time or energy to do anything else besides go to work at my desk job, come home, and do not a whole lot else.

It's an idea I'll revisit once Baby Kiwi is on the outside, though. I'm gonna look into it.

Witchydiva: UPDATE ON V_B:
"After more than a month (February 7th, to be exact), Blackshadow is breathing on his own! The trache tube will come out tomorrow. His blood pressure is good and steady; now, the physical therapy begins in earnest. Hopefully we can get him outside to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine for a little bit this week."

I suspect the Powers That Be proclaimed 3/18 to be a day of Good Luck. My dad had his breathing tube out today and I actually heard him say a couple of words on the phone... he said 'I'm hanging in there', I think, when I asked him how he was feeling.

2013-03-19 05:15:44 AM
UPDATE:

"Turns out that the trache tube didn't come out today after all; they want to give it another day or two just to make sure that v_b's well and truly ready to have it removed. And as disappointed as we are that it didn't happen today, we certainly don't want it pulled too soon, only to have to put the thing back in again.

v_b had a hard physical therapy session this morning, but he wants to keep going so he can get out of there. Your messages are really helping to keep his spirits up, and we are just overwhelmed at the outpouring of generosity from so many people that we haven't even met who've contributed to the PayPal fundraiser. We can never thank you enough."

We live in a democratic republic.  If that were THE reason, we would have single payer already.   You could also argue that the good things that might come from single payer would get ruined to some extent by the people who always take and never give.  There is never a shortage of those people and they come in all colors and income categories.  It doesn't help that they are often the loudest and most demanding voices.  This is a sort of bad place for this conversation overall, but it is a good place to talk about giving.  The sort of people who ruin socialism are the sort who would never give to this person in need.

Also, we expect the sort of service you expect when you are paying for it.  Not minimal service and not when the provider feels they can fit into their day without too much trouble.  We want everything right now.

This isn't the right conversation to have right now...

When we're seeing the damage of lack of single payer hit home is the precise time to talk about it. Those who want to bash single payer would gladly do so except then its negatively affecting someone THEY care about, then it's "now's not the time to talk about it".

Bullshiat.

VB needs help AND we need to talk about this as a nation as forces are STILL trying to kill single payer as we type.

It's similar to senators fighting against marriage equality for gays UNTIL their child comes out as gay. They're only supportive when it affects them personally.

Keep. Talking. About. It.

There are those who oppose your opinion, based on simple facts. Single payer, IE the GOVERNMENT, will kill millions of jobs and reduce the quality of healthcare. So no, I don't want my loved ones to suffer with worse care. Or for my grandparents to get reduced care so that the gov can pay for younger people instead. So. Sure. Let's talk about it if you want to, but becoming MORE dependent upon the government, just because they SAY SO, is not the answer.

Do you really want your loved ones receiving care under a program that congress passed "just so they could see what's in it"? That's a DIRECT QUOTE. These people had no idea what they were doing when they passed it. They didn't even READ IT. They just went HERRRPPDERPHEALTHCARE and raised their hands. Oh, and they passed it for us peasants, but they are above it. If it's not good enough for congress, it's not good enough for my daughter.

V_B would have received way worse care under this plan. In fact, it's likely that after a week of needing a breathing tube, they may have given him and FishWife "end of life" counseling. That's right- part of the bill was to basically STOP PAYING FOR MEDICAL CARE for those over 70 years old, and give them counseling for death instead. I've read the bill.

So go ahead and tell me how this would improve life for our loved ones. I dare you.

You're welcome to your opinion but you have no data to support your opinion while compared to almost every other industrialized nation our system is more costly with worse outcomes. Your opinions are grounded in imaginary data and paranoid projections.

Our system causes more personal bankruptcy than any other system.

Our system is more costly than any other system.

Our system causes loss of jobs (and homes) by those ill than any other system.

The only jobs to be lost are in the deadly bureaucracy of paper shuffling and claims processing denial.

Good.

The national healthcare systems of Japan and France are models of effective and efficient healthcare which has a lower per capita cost.

Even the vilified NHS gives you the option of supplemental private insurance so you don't have to wait for elective procedures.

Your imaginary scenarios have no demonstrable basis in fact.

//my family has been threatened with death should they ever choose to post photos of me in my underwear
///no, you don't want to see that.

Wat? I've never posted a pic of him, much less a pic of him in his boxers.

Though yeah, I'm right there with you on the death-as-a-consequence for anyone posting a pic of me in my undies. Slow, painful, possibly public death.

Imaginary scenarios? And yeah, you know how I know you know NOTHING about claims? It's really important actually. And we don't just deny claims willy nilly. Usually it's because the hospital has agreed THEY will pick up the cost of something. There's guidelines and usually I denied claims because people stopped paying their premiums. We aren't paper shufflers. I have saved people millions of dollars over my lifetime because I was a patient advocate. You have no clue how healthcare coverage is actually run. You have no idea how little doctors get paid for government patients like Medi-Cal. Salaries will be cut for all hospital workers because the hospitals are now getting paid pennies on the ten dollars for their work.

And way to ignore every statement I made about the ACTUAL BILL THAT WAS PASSED. Imaginary data? I can link to you the bill itself. This is not imaginary data. It is FACT that Congress didn't know what they were passing when they passed it because they didn't even read it. There's clauses that give hospitals access to our bank account balances so they can see how much we have to pay for our share of the cost. That's intrusion into our lives right there, and it's not paranoia or imaginary. IT IS IN THE BILL.

But you know what? If you want to debate this further, EIP. Talk to me directly. I am in the middle of this system, I know a thousand percent more about it than you do.

I'm not going to threadjack V_B and FishWife anymore.

I want you to know I am thinking about you, you crazy bastage. Like, a lot. Don't know if you realize what you got me through once upon a time but... Goddammit, when you feel like it, text me, will you? Sending much love and healing thoughts your way and Jen's. Jen, thanks for taking care of him. He's one of the best damn honorable people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Your love for each other always makes me smile. I'm all mushy and shiat right now so I'm going to try and cut this off and not make a fool out of myself. I'd like to come visit when you're ready.

That isn't v_b. That is smells_like_meat just a couple months after starting his own bout with MRSA. So glad we didn't lose him!! He and his wife are lovely folks, and I remember them for putting together a great poker tourney at the first FarkCon in Vegas. They organised the whole thing, and even provided prizes (I still have the poker hand earrings I won). Good people too, just like v_b and fishwife.

Also, I really love you and I am so thankful you are alive. I am so sorry I just heard about this and it is hard to put into words
what you mean to me.
