kiwimoogle84: gambitsgirl: fat_free: Yo Fundraiser Organizer person, how hard is that $5K for the hospital? For instance, can you go down to the Finance dept at the hospital and negotiate, say you got $3500 in cold hard cash that you can pay RIGHT NOW instead of going onto a payment plan? If that's an option, go for it and you can keep any extraneous cash-ola.

TO THOSE IN CHARGE!!!!! Make sure J_VB sees this!!!!!! Stellar idea.

There is no such thing as extra money as long as V_B is on disability and this idea is stellar.

Yes- and trust me, hospitals are like collection companies. They'd much rather have 60% for sure RIGHT NOW than possibly none if you default.

My trouble is I need ongoing care from a physician, not a hospital, so that won't fly for me. I wish it did.

I floated the system for 4 years till we had $100 left to live on with him sick and a 7 & 9 year old. But walked away fairly clean. Broken but clean.

After years of endless fighting, United Healthcare assigned us a personal representative to advocate for us. I mean I got charged for ambulance due to "out of network"?!?!?? 911 is 911 asstards. After 2 years of that crap I snapped on them and screamed logic into the phone repeatedly). They were great.

Then I dealt with Va which is why I have dark humor.

Then social security.

(va and ss both asked for the first and only check we got back cause he only lived 25 of 31 days in October. No really. No shiat).

Inform them that you have no obligation to pay out of net as the hospital was informed of your insurance carrier upon admission. Its the out of nets responsibility to ask. Those bills always get reduced to net levels. Often 90% or more. Are there any charges that you simply don't know what they are talking about? While in the extreme care facility for two months I was charged $200 a day by visits from a Dr. that I had never heard of. I informed my health care provider, they investigated, and it was removed.

For the most part your health care provider is your friend. If approached in a calm, friendly, business like manner most of them are glad to help straighten things out. The ONLY way you can get the bill for an ambulance ride is if the treating physician doesn't deem it an emergency. Even if it's an out of area ambulance ride (which means it was outside of 30 miles from your primary care physician) its bizarre to not have it covered. I can check on the billing rules if you like- now you've got me curious.

Oh I won. That was at the 2-year point where they auto kick back all bills. When they really realize how much this shiat gonna cost them.

It was overturned. I was on a rampage. I got an advocate. They quit getting Enraged Woman calls. It all worked. But for a while it was daunting.

Mike is a fantastic person and one of the first TFers I'd ever met. He's kind, funny, and always willing to help others. I don't think I've ever seen him without a smile on his handsome face. I'm so sorry to hear he's been sick.

Mike, please get better soon. We love you. We have many more beers to drink and burgers to eat at the Redwood, my friend. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Good for you, and I'm sorry for your loss. I can relate- though no ambulance would have saved mine- DOA. I did get a bill from the tow yard that housed the scrap metal he died on for six months. I screamed at them too and they expediently made it disappear.

Me though- luckily I only have four more months of the $700 a month med bills, though I can't be sure it'll be resolved by then. The light at the end of the tunnel is what keeps me going even though I'm exhausted trying to keep up.

I'm going to remember this when/if dad gets well, because  from what I saw in the last week, his wife has no chance of handling the finances correctly for a long time depending on what happens... She's great at his bedside, but show her a stack of bills and she melts into a puddle...

EIP. All I have to do is verify who the insurance company is, get a copy of the UBO4, and get a schedule of benefits to confirm everything was billed correctly. 2 of 3 I can do from work, believe it or not.

Srsly, if ANYONE feels they've been screwed by the insurance, I may be able to help you. Ins companies aren't evil, but people make mistakes, and to patients who have no idea how to read an EOB, it can be daunting.

Lsherm: Kensey: If you want to donate without having to set up a PayPal account, this may work -- copy & paste this URL into your favorite browser:

http://paypal.com/xclick/business=

and add the fundraiser e-mail address to the end before you hit Enter.  You should get a payment form that will allow you to skip the account setup.

If somebody on the receiving end can verify that 1) the $25 I sent this way from my orion-com.com address showed up, and 2) there don't appear to be weird fund holds on it, this may be a workable solution for all the other non-PayPal'ers out there.

(Thanks modmins for nuking the screwed-up link I posted earlier)

Everything about that smells like a scam....

Nope, not a scam (check my profile, I've been a Farker for a LONG time), but PayPal really REALLY wants you to sign up for an account through the normal payment channels, and this apparently bypasses that.  (Paypal better step up their game though or services like ChipIn will start eating their lunch...)

Yes. The key is to relax (as much as you can) and take charge.

ll the folks out there that you're dealing with are not heartless monsters. The bills are generated by a machine but the folks that you negotiate with are people. You may get a hard ass now and again but most are going to be understanding.

All of you wonderful, amazing folks are making V_B and I cry, but in a good way.  You all ROCK.  We can't ever thank you enough for helping us; your willingness to jump in without hesitation is, well, nothing less than awesome.  Mike is improving every day; probably another couple of weeks before I can spring him from the hospital, but if his determination (read: stubborn streak) has anything to do with it, it will be sooner rather than later.  THANK YOU ALL, FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART.

Bills aren't generated by a machine. They're generated by coders who input what was done, number of days inpatient stay (per diem is how a lot of hospital claims are paid) DRG's (diagnosis related groupers- average out the cost of care for that DX and that's what they charge) and procedure codes. Then we as an insurance company get the bill and pay according to contract- or if non par, reasonable and customary rates. Or if it's an HMO, sometimes payment is the responsibility of the medical group itself and not the plan.

Point is, it's AAALLLLL people. You can't talk to the coders or billers or claims people usually, but the cust service people should certainly be versed in 1500's and UB04's (doctor's fee claims and inpatient/facility claims). They can tell if, oops, the coder put down that you had radiology (a 7XXXX code) instead of a blood draw (8XXXX code).

And with that... I'll stop speaking what probably feels like Cantonese to a non-ins person.

/it's sad that this is how I nerd out
//and I love it

CONTACT ME AS SOON AS YOU SEE THE BILL. Not kidding. If ANYTHING is out of sorts, you can go as far as calling your insurance company on and telling them I'm authorized to speak on your behalf. I've done it for another Farkette and I saved her $3800 because someone calculated her deductible wrong.

If I come into any money, some is going your way.

kiwimoogle84: FishWife: All of you wonderful, amazing folks are making V_B and I cry, but in a good way.

I can't even imagine how good/relieved an offer like this would make me feel. Expert advice = priceless.

You can't copy and paste from fark because of coding - you have to manually type it into PayPal:

vblackshadow*fundraiser[nospam-﹫-backwards]liamg*com

Shoot me an email to the above address if you keep having problems, please.

rickythepenguin: Yeah....not working here either on paypal.

You have to type it in manually, you can't copy and paste any part of it from the thread or it will give you problems.

The address is full of dashes to prevent it from being harvested by spambots. It won't work if you copy/paste it directly.
I would just type it into a plain text editor like NotePad and copy/paste that, instead.

dv-ous: Witchydiva: Sorry, back from my own doctor appointment. You guys make me cry happy tears.

Current PayPal balance:   $3,978.41 USD

I'm all for "from each according to ability" but which one of you twerps sent $0.41? Fess up.

:-)

It probably has to do with the fees being taken out of the balance rather than being covered by the donor. Or perhaps an international donation, those can get weird.

Well, I'm not going to give anything, but anyone who has Billy Joe Shaver in his profile can't be all bad.  Good luck man, and don't get shot in the face.
