Hugo Chavez's body has been lying in state to the hilltop museum where he'll be displayed indefinitely is lined with some of the most dangerous slums on the planet.

I guess that says a Lot ....

/Not sure what, but a lot nonetheless.

I think they should be concentrating on their college classes so they can stay eligible to play next year, not participating in these silly demonstrations for some dead foreigner.

So they're still going to put him on display even though they've given up on preserving his body?

Once the body becomes a skeleton that'll be cool, until then I gather it'll be really creepy.

Aside from a few idiots on here, I'm pretty sure most of us are happy he's gone tits up.  Maybe they'll get some actual progress there now.

I work with a woman who's a Venezuelan expat.  She's actually kind of terrified about what's coming, and is worried about her family.  She says that the guy Chavez left in charge is basically an unqualified idiot (and this in comparison to Chavez whom she hates), but that due to the way the government is handling the election he'll likely be retained.  She's afraid things might end up getting openly violent.

Reading that article you would have no clue why Chavez had popular support. Glad I live in Europe where the press at least tries to give us a reasonable picture of events. To live with the US press must make it difficult to work out why the World is as it is and it's people act as they do.

Looks like Curtis Sliwa really loves Venezuela and Hugo Chavez.

Yep. This is why I've mostly stayed away from internet forums discussing Venezuelan events (except now, because your comment is sensitive and that shiate is rare these days). Reddit, Fark, Tumblr, Twitter, etc are mostly ran and opinionated on by American sheep who like to simplify the situation by calling Chavez a dictator. Or they regurgitate what they hear from "that friend of a friend who is a Venezuelan expat". Most of these expats are rich Venezuelans who moved out because they had the money and in no way sympathize with the Venezuelan people whose lives Chavez changed for the good.

I actually can't blame Americans who cut into my conversations with their usual "hurr durr all my news stations say Chavez=bad so it must be so!". And by "can't blame them" I mean I'm not their farking elementary school teacher and I'm not about to sit down and explain 13 years of complex sociopolitical history that can't be summarized with "HEHEHE GOOD ON YE CANCER FOR OUTLIVING THAT PIECE OF shiatE CHAVEZ HUHUH".

So, what does European press tells about Chavez?

There's nothing mystical about Chavez's popular support. He gets it by promising stupid people anything they want, and then breaking his promises with the excuse "The Americans made me break my promises with their capitalist pig-dog ways." This way, he never has to suppress any more than the tiny minority of his citizens who are smart enough to ask exactly how America can make him do bad things, and never actually has to keep any of the promises he makes.

Yes, bring in the School of the Americas-trained death squad and disappearance aficionados, like they usually do.
