For the record, John Warner married a heiress to the Mellon fortune and then dumped her once he got all the money out of her.

So an attack submarine seems fitting, though not in a nice way.

John Warner should try to be more like David Warner.

I love articles like this, which have no particular substance or political implication.   They're like Rorschach tests, where the psychological state of those posting is revealed by what they project onto an otherwise meaningless page.

Around 1975 while at sea the ship I was on was scheduled for a visit by then Sec Nav John Warner.
We had a boiler problem a little before he arrived. One of the things that he did when he came aboard was to put on a set of coveralls and crawl into the fireside of the boiler to get a first hand view. He did not have to do this, he just wanted to.

Coping With The Great American SSN Shortage

https://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htsub/articles/20100112.aspx

"The problem is that new Virginia class subs cannot be built quickly enough to replace all the Cold War era Los Angeles class boats that have to retire. Even that will be delayed, at least for 16 Los Angeles class subs, that will get enough refurb to keep them at sea for up to two more years. Meanwhile, many of the shipyards used to build all those Los Angeles class boats, were discarded as part of the Peace Dividend for winning the Cold War.

The shortage will begin in 2022, when the number of SSNs will fall below 48. The bottom will be in 2028, when only 41 SSNs will be available, and the shortage won't end until 2034. While keeping boats at sea more than six months per cruise will insure that all current requirements (that need about ten boats at sea at any given time) are met, the navy wonÂ't be able to meet its wartime need for 35 boats. Keep in mind that a certain number of boats are always laid up for upgrades, maintenance or repairs."

This

I can live with naming them after states and cities-after all we have no battleships to name after states and no cruisers for cities..

We need to stop naming naval vessels after anybody living

We need to stop naming them after politicians whose chief accomplishment was to get elected/appointed..  Warner military service record merits no such honor ditto for John Murtha.

To have a Naval Combatant named after you  should have been elected President or if based on military service  have been awarded the equivalent  of the Navy Cross or higher
.

Names that we should be using but haven't used in awhile:

United States
Constitution (II)
President
Constellation
Congress
Lexington
Yorktown
Saratoga

Well, when Warner was chairman of the Armed Services Committee he (according to his Wiki bio), "...protected and enlarged the flow of billions of dollars into the Virginia economy each year via the state's naval installations and shipbuilding firms which served his reelection efforts in every cycle."

So this is just pork payback payola gift-wrapped in a flag, and tied up with a nice little yellow ribbon.

For the record, he was not Knighted by Queen Elizabeth.
An American cannot be knighted.
He was given an honorary knight title - "Honorary Knight Commander" - which just means he gets a nice little medal but he's not really a knight.
He doesn't get to be called 'Sir' and he doesn't get to attend the cool Knight dinner with the real "Sir this-or-that" at Windsor every year and he doesn't get the ceremony where the Queen taps you on the shoulder with a sword.
Some ambassador just shows up to give you a nice medal to pin on your suit. Where it if you like, it means nothing.
Pretty much it's like getting an honorary doctorate. You're not really a doctor but you get a nice parchment to hang on the wall if you like.
It just means the Queen knows of you and has acknowledged you for something or other.

I agree with you with respect to attack subs.  State names, however, should have been used for boomers. Traditionally, the Navy named battleships for states. While it is almost certain that the Iowa Class will remain the last surface battleships that were ever built for the US, what is a battleship, after all? What differentiates a battleship from a cruiser or a frigate? They are the "first ships of the line", meaning they were the ships with the biggest guns in the fleet. A boomer's missile tubes are considerably bigger bores than the 16" cannon of the Iowa and South Dakota classes and represent their successor.
