squibbits: Doesn't surprise me. HOA officers are typically a bunch of Dianne Feinsteins on acid.

Um, rather the opposite. HOAs are privatized government, where majority rules and minority opinion is accorded zero rights. They are the folks who back "small government" so they are free to ban anyone they don't like from their space and declare that "public spaces" are subject exclusively to private control.

OrcusFelinus: Why would anyone volunteer to live in one of these douchenozzle controlled neighborhoods?

Because not everyone is wealthy enough to live on a plot of land large enough to effectively isolate them from their neighbors.  Give me a house with an acre or two of land between the nearest neighbor and I wouldn't want an HOA.  But if I'm stuck in a cookie-cutter house, townhouse or apartment; as much as it I dislike restrictions imposed on what *I* can do, I'm willing to accept the HOA terms because they limit what my *neighbors* can do.

HOAs are just a smaller implementation of cities.  Most cities have rules about where kids can play, how loud you can be, what vehicles you can drive on the road, what you can build, what permits you need to build something, how you can build it, what pets you can have, what type of lawn you can have, etc, etc...but people, collectively, want those laws.  Most people agree on common behavior and want to enforce compliance for everyone.

I live in a cheap apartment (relatively speaking) in a crappy part of town.  I'm an 'end unit' which means I share a wall with the outside and immediately outside is paved.  In this neighborhood, my wall (well, my landlord's wall) is the closest thing to a basketball court the kids have.  They will happily throw a basketball against the wall of my bedroom.  The construction is such that it is unbelievably loud (much louder inside than out).

Now, I'd never allow my children to do that.  It's disrespectful, damaging to the building, and they have absolutely no claim of ownership.  But the neighbors (yes, I spoke to their parents because I'm a d-bag) don't see it that way.  They don't care.  They are happy to let their kids outside in the morning and let them do whatever it is they are going to do.  'Kids will be kids'.  I'm not saying they are *wrong* and I'm *right* - but we have different expectations of acceptable behavior (although, realistically, if it were them being woken up, they'd probably change their tune, but regardless).  An HOA gives individuals more direct control over the definition of acceptable.

It's not a bad thing it all.  But yeah, it can be applied poorly.

In many places finding a new construction without a HOA is becoming like finding a telecom without a mandatory arbitration clause, i.e. good luck with that.

Having lived in Boca Raton for almost 20 years, this is not only completely unsurprising due to the prevalence of inordinately powerful HOAs, but the city itself is full of douchenozzles, too. There aren't any places for kids for play on purpose. Boca doesn't want anything that might encourage children or teenagers to congregate. Take it somewhere else. It is a predominantly upscale area filled with old, Jewish white people. They hate pretty much everyone.

Because they don't want to hear screaming kids and the clickity clack of skateboards on sidewalks.
The little shiats in my neighborhood play street football and street hockey even though there is a park one block away and a school playground two blocks away.  No you cannot play hockey with your goal in front of my car you little dildo.  Put the goal in front of your mom's minivan.  You are 12.  You should know better.

I would also ban weekend lawn mowing and any use of leaf blowers.  Why are you washing your car at 11pm?  Do you really need to use a leaf blower to dry your car?  Do you need a front lawn? There is a park with lots of grass one block away.  What a nice Saturday.  Let's have a BBQ.  What?  I can't here you over 2 lawn mowers, 1 leaf blower, Islamic prayer music, and explicit rap music.  "Face down, ass up,  that's the way, I like to fark."

This is nothing that a little arson and chains on the door can't fix.  You want to be a nazi?  We'll burn you out.

If it teaches children to despise HOAs and to never want to live in one, good.

/There are far more insidious things that demolished your property's value then little johnny's basket ball net next door

chrisco123: I've always wondered...Why do people hate skateboarders so much?  I was slower than a bike and took up less space.  Why the hate?

Because idiots think that skateboarding is a gateway to crime and drugs.

Homeowner president says "Cars go through here very fast".
Their efforts seem misdirected.
Also, it would seem that they have opened the door to liability the next time a speeding car injures anyone, including the occupants of the speeding car.

FTFA:  We tried to get answers from several members of the HOA. One drove away, saying, "It's not about the kids."

For once, its not about the children.  And the speaker is STILL a douche.
