Thanks for the responses, everyone. The part that surprised me the most is that people said that MLS has just as much of a diving problem as the other leagues- wouldn't have expected US audiences to be willing to put up with that. Followup question- would post-match review to award yellows to uncaught flops fix that? They're doing post-game reviews and fines for uncaught flops in the NBA now, and it seems to be working.

Yeah, I think it might. I don't think it'll ever be eliminated, though, because it's not always easy to distinguish between a legitimate foul and an overreaction and take into account the advantage of the stop vs. play-on option in a split second. But harsher penalties after the fact would at least (hopefully) make players think twice about it.

Yes it would. The main issue is that FIFA say that the Ref is the sole arbiter of what happens on the pitch and should be regardless of the level of the game. Thats why goal line technology has been resisted so much.

It works very well for Rugby as the 4th official has 24 hours after the game to give his report to all sides and if your name is on it you will have a hearing that week. Reason why punch ups are so rare in rugby now as you will get a couple of game bans for it no matter what.

I believe I've mentioned previously I used to live 200yds away from SJP? This was pre-expansion, so about 35K capacity. When Newcastle scored, the ground would shake, then a moment later the sound waves would catch up.

That's awesome. I still have yet to make it over to England. The next time nufc play at home around Christmas I'm going to be tempted to make the trip.

H'actually reviewing the map it was more like 400 yards, but the rest is correct.

If you're lucky you might have a choice of two home games and possibly an FA Cup tie.

Well, perfect for Sunderland-Norwich, perfect for Chelsea-West Ham w/ banker, Fulham away win, good day! And it's my birthday. Hope the rest is as enjoyable, lol.

Yeah that's what I figure with the Boxing Day fixture mixed in there.

Nufc just unlucky today with bad no calls today between the missed red and that hand ball.

It's turning into quite the clusterfark at the bottom. There are quite a few teams within 6 pts of the zone, practically the whole bottom half of the table.

Indeed. Hopefully our unexpected 3 pts from Spurs can boost us clear, as we still have a couple matches yet that should get us points before the end of the season.

I squeeze the lead 40pts wider. Huge day for 30/30.

Amazingly, I ended up with +10.  Chelsea and Wigan gave me two perfects for the day.  Woo.

midpoint: Every FFPL Spurs supporter* lost points yesterday. All Toon supporters scored 0**. All MUFC supporters scored 0 or more. All Oxford Utd players scored +75. Best Liverpool score was 0.

* Discounting HawaiiE, who opted out two months ago it seems.
** Obamartins 0 included a broken banker. Such a shame [sincere face].

Love the specific mention of the MIGHTY Oxford United here. Incidentally they lost 1-0 to Chesterfield yesterday which just about eliminates Oxford from playoff our promotion competition barring a couple of epic collapses at the top of League Two
