(TreeHugger)   Some people are getting all crabby over an arcade game where you try to catch a real lobster using a giant metal claw. "To play the claw game is like running into the chicken house and terrifying the birds"   (treehugger.com) divider line 66

boinkingbill: This game needs to be updated to reflect today's times.  They should change the claw to a drone.  Oh yeah, and put beards and turbans on all the lobsters.

No, you're doing it wrong. This is how you terrify the birds in the chicken house (along with anyone with any quantity of compassion in their souls).

Sweet Baby Jeebus, that's one of the sickest things I've ever laughed at!

I wouldn't mind eating at a steakhouse that allows patrons to shoot the cows being butchered in the back.  I'm weird, it wouldn't bother me to watch the butchering through glass while I enjoy my steak.

The lobsters are dead the instant they hit the water. The sound you sometimes hear is not, as some idiots like to claim, them screaming. It is steam coming out of their bodies.

Also, humans lose conciousness almost instantly and lose the sense of feeling instantly when dumped into boiling water.
You can thank the assholes in WWII Germany for this research.

... somehow I am not reassured.  Yeah, I eat meat and I like it, and it involves killing animals.  That does NOT mean I'm cool with "Hey let's torture the little shiat to death and let it die in as horrible as way as we can contrive offhand."  No - FFS if you can't cook it without killing it quick and clean then quit being a dick and leave it alone - or oh I dunno maybe come up with a fast way to kill it and pot it so it's not an issue?
/yeah, not that hard - mallet, chopsick, fast hands - chinese cooks manage it all the time.  Just cause "we've" always done it like that doesn't mean its the best, most sensible, or even remotely ethical way to go about it.

You are also forgetting the simplicity of the nervous system of the lobsters.
Plus, their simple brain is very close to the surface towards the front of their head.
The brain is cooked so fast that they are dead immediatly.

Having said that, yes we do not need to torture our food.
We do need to give our prey the cleanest death that we can.Without any real proof, just an educated guess, I would have to assume that a clam would last much longer in the boiling water than any lobster due to the rather heavy shell and the fact that it would protect the clam from the heat for a number of seconds. You never hear any sane people complain about the clams manner of death.

Just toss the damn things in a big pot of 1 inch of steaming water and cook them for 4-1/2 minutes per pound after it comes back to boil.   A 2 pound lobster will take 9 minutes duhhhhh.   Lobsters don't scream but if you're that much of a pussy, put them in the freezer for fifteen minutes or take a big knife and slice down through the top of it's head.   We're not killing puppies here folks.

The first version I found when I googled it had banjo music...

senoy: Wow, people have become so separated from nature and their food that they are actually able to anthropomorphize lobsters of all things. It's sad how little contact we have with our food that something as benign as a lobster tank should cause us emotional distress.

So not wanting to unnecessarily torment living beings = anthropomorphizing?

Nice.

Hardly. Grew up on a farm myself, personally slaughtered many cattle and chickens by hand and ended up eating the results. There was nothing but respect for the animals we killed and their deaths were quick and relatively painless.

"Don't be a dick," applies to everything that lives. People who boil shiat alive or devise pain-inflicting ways of amusement on others deserve the nastiest of things to come to them in eventuality. Being human means actually elevating yourself above because you recognize right from wrong, not disregarding anything not human.

And that's why I don't anthropomorphize humans.
