FTFA: In Singapore, some elevators are equipped with "urine detection devices," which will cause an alarm to sound and make the elevator stop until police arrive and arrest the offender

This seems like a workable solution to me. If you gotta go then go find a place wherein you will not be obtrusive. That was the principle that I used back when.

I remember watching a documentary years ago, about some NYC low income housing project. You know, one of those massive apartment buildings which today are being torn down.

Along with graffiti being sprayed on the interior walls, narrow hallways painted with some cheap, glossy paint and common areas that resembled those in abandoned mental hospitals, they had elevators that broke down a lot.

The occupants commented about the urine smell in the elevators from people peeing in them.

I was surprised that people would urinate in such a necessary piece of machinery needed to get around in their own homes. I couldn't grasp the uncaring mind set such folks had. I mean, to me, that was like peeing in the mud room of your own house, or on the porch.

I saw another piece on elevator repair men who mentioned the damage done to elevators from folks peeing on them and how they disliked going into the bottom of the shaft to fix things because of it.

I ride elevators periodically in local businesses and the only thing that annoys me about them in some instances is that they smell like feet.

I guess I need to consider myself lucky.

I recall the folks in those big projects biatching about poor maintenance, the graffiti and sullen young men clustering in the common areas causing trouble. I figure that maybe they should have started policing themselves instead of depending on the land lord.

Seems to me the many huge condo's I've been in didn't have that problem because the tenants themselves enforced the rules and each had a manager who lived on site with the ability to kick repeat offenders out or levy stiff fines.

I can understand why the huge housing projects from the 70's are now being emptied and torn down.

wHoodside RepRezent!

Not that I use the LIRR much but that's my station when I do have to use it.

To be fair, Woodside's a historically immigrant community with a large Celtic population. In keeping with the spirit of St. Paddy's Day, let's blame the drunk Irish... or the drunk Long Island kids coming into Manhattan for the parade.

401kman: This is why we can't have nice things here.   We seriously need to have public restrooms in try and alleviate this shiat.

And what do you think those public restrooms would look like after a few months? It's amazing that the parks that do have them are able to keep them up.

BigRightRear: But always remember as per FARK:: Yankees are way more civilized the those stupid southerners. My personal experience is usually just the opposite.

We appreciate your anecdotal evidence and should now all change our opinions. Also, I don't think 'civilized' means 'not d*cks.' It just means that blacks/gays/jews/women are allowed to use the same water fountains without getting stoned to death.

Back on topic: I don't understand how the NY subway can be such a shiat hole and the DC subway is almost pretty.

"I say, what a marvelous infrastructure the fine folks who manage transportation have installed here."

"So, shall we relieve ourselves in it, on it, near it and scribble bullsh*t on the walls with discount spray enamel?"
