He embodies everything I always loathed about 80s music... well him and Soft Cell,... and Thomas Dolby,... and and and....

Is this a troll? Because Thomas Dolby is pretty damn innocuous and basically a one hit wonder and whose one hit I haven't heard on commercial radio for at least 15 years. It's not even played at clubs, much less overplayed like Tainted Love (which I can understand being sick of).

If only there were sort of Tupperware type container to store himself in to keep in pop star freshness.

MikeSass I like that solution. He's always been a whiney little twit even when he was famous back in the 90's. I figured after he cancelled Kimmel and threatened to cancel Staples Center he would find some reason to whine and cry and cancel more shows.

The last time I saw him was 1992 and he cancelled a bunch of times before he finally toured. The thing that sucked was each time Ticketmaster kept their service fee so a $25 ticket to see Morrissey eventually cost me $35

I don't know that I'd really lump him in with a lot of the sterile, almost-rock that England put out. He and Johnny Marr really were able to put a spin on it that differentiated their music from bands trying to sound like Sisters of Mercy or Echo and the Bunnymen.

Good. He wont be missed by me. Can't stand the guy!

He's really burned his bridges in the last few weeks. He can't hate everyone and expect to make decent money on his tour. Just sayin.

MikeSass: The singer has suffered a series of medical mishaps over the past few months including a bleeding ulcer, Barrett's esophagus and double pneumonia.

See how healthy vegetarianism is?  Give the man a triple cheeseburger and he will not only get well immediately, but he will quit being such an annoying coont a the same time.

One could argue he'd get an immune buildup from all the retch found in burgers today.

Like a bleu cheese burger.

With onion rings.

/off to the diner.

MikeSass: To be fair, it has to be disheartening to hear that you have sold out all these arenas only to get on stage and see them 3/4 empty.

This is my guess as to the real reason why the tour got cancelled. The tickets simply weren't sold.

/he should try going on a sizzurp bender with lil wayne.

Jimmy Rabbitte: What do you call yourselves?

Derek: "And And And."

Jimmy Rabbitte: "And And farkin' And?"

Derek: Well, Ray's thinking of putting an exclamation mark after the second "and." Says it'd look deadly on the posters.

You're not listening to the "right" stations (or there are no Jack FMs in your area).

While not a hit, "Hyperactive" is a fine song (relatively speaking within the genre of 80s pop)

I don't really like him because he's a colossal pain in everyone's ass. This is karma's way of saying Morrissey is a biatch.

Well,
His behavior has gotten him more attention recently than if he had just shut up and toured.

So, I guess, for him it's a win.

His music is too whiny for me though.

I was at Cosmopolitan last night watching Flogging Molly, and if you weren't there you missed out.  The Boulevard Pool was packed.
The jumbotron had Morrisey still listed on their schedule... I would imagine the theater Morrisey was scheduled to perform in wouldn't be nearly as packed.  But it's Vegas.  Stupid drunk tourists would pay to see paint dry if you advertised it right.

My point is that in 20 years the kids will be saying the same thing about "now" music that you think is great. They'll be saying the 2000-and-teens had lame butt music. That's all. I just find it strange how that works. There are exceptions (i.e., not so much exceptional music that transcends the generations--though there is that, really, if you listen to the music--but exceptions in that some kids will reject their own generation's lame butt music and prefer the lame butt music of a previous generation). But what group of kids wouldn't love to sing along to "heaven knows, I'm miserable now" at any period in time? So I get your point about the Smiths, but not all 80s music should be trashed. There were some gems there, too.

I know that, still doesn't change how I specifically feel about rock in the 80s, even more specifically Morrissey's wimpy style rock. I could go into plenty of examples of garbage butt rock from the last decade and now, but that's not the topic. Sure there was some gems in the 80s, but it's always been my least favorite decade of music (obviously that involves generalizing) since the 60s. To me rock in that era is like rap was in the 00s, meaning the mainstream just became so horrible while a new and interesting underground was developing.

/I don't even like "now" rock music, it's wimpy folksy hipster crap that all sounds the same, so I really hope kids in 20 years make fun of it.

2013-03-18 03:19:08 AM
I agree, TheJoe03. I don't even consider popular music from the 80s, or mainstream rock from the 80s, as music really. It's unlistenable, like torture. Some of the underground stuff, on the other hand, was great, like you say.

And if you don't even like "now" rock music, well that changes everything. I, too, hope to see the kids in 2033 mocking My Morning Jacket (for one)! So we're in agreement. Awesome.
