We "crowd into arenas and stadiums to marvel at our pathetic physical abilities as if they were something special" because those are (relatively) outside the normal abilities of everyday humans.

Track events are not, hence the lower attendance.

Anyone in a modicum of decent shape can run, but not all runners can play football, or basketball, or baseball, or tennis, etc.
