Jackson Lake, "The Next Doctor"

I like the character but there is no way it would be acceptable or understandable for him to A) leave his son B)take him with him into more danger. He just got him back after he thought he was dead!

1) Wilfred Mott

Oh please yes. Even now yes. Rory's dad gets to eat sandwiches while sitting out of the Tardis and Wilford doesn't even get to see inside?! NO JUSTICE NO PEACE!!!

Re-watch The End of Time Pt 1 and 2. Wilf does get in to the TARDIS and then chastises the Doctor for not keeping it cleaner. Watched them Wednesday with a new Whovian friend. Its the only reason I remember this.

I still say he needs a ride.

The Stealth Hippopotamus:

My point is that Wilfred has done everything that a companion has done without being a companion. He's been out of the Solar System, he's been in the TARDIS, he's had a ride in the TARDIS, and he was next to the Doctor at the end of time. He's fulfilled the requirements already. Just not a recurring companion.

dang. ok ok. I took you're word for it when you say he got to see the inside.

Still think he should get a little excursion. And by this I mean exactly that he should have the Doctor take him someplace fun and give a grand adventure.

Oh I totally agree with that. Wilf is a hard character to categorize because of his adventures with the Doctor. He's done everything a normal companion has done without being a normal companion. But I do like him.

I'd also like to see Capt. Jack return maybe. I read somewhere that he was slated to show up at Demon's Run but filming schedules prevented it.

I'm not sure about that. At some point he becomes a character of himself. I like where he is at and I could see him popping in for a half an episode but to actually act like a companion for a while? No thanks.

And the actor is getting enough work that a bit part in one episode won't get them to take time off to do it.

I don't have the love for Wilfred mainly because I can't stand Donna Noble.  Would have loved to have had more Jack in Doctor Who.

The one companion that completely whiffed on was River Song.  She would have been an epic companion but then they had to go and completely ruin her character.

I just thought it'd be fun. I'd like to see a character from the 9th Doctor show up with the 11th and beyond. I like those kinds of characters.

oh totally agree. watching old companions try to figure out the new Doctor is always fun.

Thank you. I dont get the love that most people have for her. I dont find her sexy, funny or engaging. The idea of someone know more about the Doctor than the Doctor is fun but Moffat just didn't pull it off.
But we have already established that I dont have a perfect recollection of the Nu Who so maybe I missed something.

I'll agree with both of you. I was excited for the potential that River had in the Silence of the Library and Forest of the Dead. But as her character developed in to being an offshoot of Amy and Rory kinda killed it for me. It made the show more about how their story and the Doctor being along for the ride than it was about the Doctor's adventures. That shift in focus left me mehhh

Yes, I really didn't like what he did with River Song. She was awesome and spunky and mysterious in the Library, but she just didn't have that in the later episodes.

She could still become a companion without violating cannon. He letter said she waited for him. Didn't say how long, or that it was Ten she was waiting for. Eleven or later could go back, take her for adventures and then take her back saying he will return...

Of course she couldn't be a companion for Ten because Tenant dumped Sophia Myles shortly after filming that episode.

Carey Mulligan could/would do a one-shot, but her film career probably inhibits a series run.

I find River to be completely obnoxious. She's way worse than Rose ever was, with her "I'm married to the Doctor" schtick.

*SPOILERS* The Wedding of River Song sealed my hatred. At the end, when she and Amy are having wine in Amy's garden, Amy says something about feeling guilty about killing Madame Kovarian. River responds by saying it happened in an aborted/non-existent timeline, so she never actually killed anyone. However, a few minutes later, she claims to be the Doctor's wife......even though their "wedding" took place in the same aborted, non-existent timeline. How is that possible? Either both things happened, or both things didn't happen. You can't pick and choose, River. You suck and I hate you.

Sure it would be a pain in the ass to fit through the door of the tardis, but it would have made for some interesting plot twists.

Canon states that a Time Lord cannot (is forbidden) to cross his own timeline.

Now, they've violated this time and time again, and it appears to be a mandate in place from the (now time locked) Time Lords themselves. (The Three Doctors, The Five Doctors, etc.) They even placed a "catch-all" with 10's later episodes where he said "fark it!" In his eyes, it ended badly and so he's reluctant to do so again.

Even after stating all of that, the violations of this "rule" during 11's run (Pandorica) are all over the place.

I seriously wanted the Doctor to take Oswald in her Dalek form as a companion. How cool would that have been? A Dalek companion!

Which is a stupid law because if you are a time traveller you just cannot ever avoid crossing your own timeline. The mere fact River had to keep a book to keep track of their meetings proved he again and again met her at different points in her timeline. It was a rule invented by scriptwriters to explain away why he didn't just pop back in time to solve every problem, even though that is by default what he does every single week.

I was rewatching the Ninth Doctor series recently and I realized something about Lynda with a "Y". The Doctor invites her along, says he wouldn't mind having her around. Why? She wasn't brilliant or clever or anything like that. It's to set the audience up. It's to make them believe that when Rose is "killed" by the Anne-droid, you think she really is dead and that Lynda is going to be the replacement. Of course Rose isn't really dead, so Lynda has to go.

Sounds good in theory, but every place they went would have to be ADA compliant.

To be fair, there's a lot to enjoy with River.  It just never come together in a cohesive whole character, which is a shame.

Yeah...figured it was just a list of people from the last less-than-a-decade, clicked and saw that's exactly what it was.

Benton would be great.

\still hoping for him to come across a red-headed pirate named Glitz...

2013-03-15 03:18:39 PM
Ah, another list made by people who don't realize that there were 26 seasons of Doctor Who made before 2005...

Sabalom Glitz is the first name I could think of. He was sort of like Captain Jack before there was a Captain Jack. Plus, he popped Ace, and also possibly nailed Mel and Peri. Therefore, he may be one of the best Doctor Who characters ever.

One of the Alpha Centaurians (the Giant Green Cock Monsters) would have been interesting to have around, just because, hey, giant green cock monster.

And the biker chick in Delta and the Bannermen was the other finalist for post-Mel companion with the Seventh Doctor, but everyone liked Ace more.

Welfare Peanut Butter: You can't pick and choose, River. You suck and I hate you.

Let's look at the "childhood" River had, shall we?

-Conceived on the TARDIS, making her effectively a Time Lord-like genetic mutation.
-Born on a massive space station/hospital of sorts, after her mother was kidnapped by a religious order intent on ensuring the Doctor's death via her.
-Brainwashed by said order, including significant time locked up in spacesuit.  Calls the President of the United States for help.
-Breaks free, escapes, thinks she's dying, but realizes she can regenerate.  Does so at least once.
-Ends up in 1980's England, becomes best friend of her parents, who she pretends to be the same age as.
-Shows an obsession with the Doctor, that turns from a desire to kill him, to love/infatuation - twice doing insane things to prevent his death (the latter involving stopping time itself)

So, when she doesn't make the same distinction between her actions in the alternate universe and Amy's, I think it's best to keep in mind that:

a) She's trying to make her mother feel better.
b) She's a little insane, to put it nicely
c) Like she's going to let a little thing like "oh, it was an alternate universe" prevent her marriage with The Doctor from counting - if you can't figure out why, I refer you to b.

Daughter of one doctor, wife(ish?) of another...yeah, that's a recipe for a one-off character if there ever was one.

No Classic-Era? None of these people compare to Sara Kingdom.  Well, okay, except Wilf. Bringing him on as a full timer would have been awesome.  Couldn't do that, though, we had to make room for the Martha reunion. Sigh.

Still, Wilf's not quite as tall and leggy as Sara.

Moffatt's original script described her as "companion material."

2013-03-15 03:47:31 PM
I vote for Stormacles, Dark Lord of All, although having the Doctor bring a baby everywhere seems a bit like jumping the shark (if that's even possible for this series)

2013-03-15 03:50:44 PM
a few still have the potential to come back should Steven Moffat ever get tired of feisty, flirtatious women with some sort of chronological mix-up going on

We've had a Time Lord daughter conceived in the TARDIS who meets the Doctor in roughly reverse order and whose 'last' appearance was back at Ten, the mother of same, the TARDIS itself who pretty much perceives all of time at once, now someone who we're introduced to as having died more than once.

What's next, one who gives birth in reverse? (I am not GIS'ing that if my life depended on it.)
