They were going to use your mother, Trebek, but everybody knows that
she can handle more than three men at a time!

Matt Lauer is a smug d-bag who already has wrecking the olympics to his credit. No and hell no.

Ryan Seacrest would be a better pick.

2013-03-15 10:33:30 AM
I'd go with either Ken Jennings or Pat Kiernan.

2013-03-15 10:36:42 AM
i hate Trebek as host.  Always has to put down the reigning champion some how.  With the current champion he had to say "he's been lucky that when he doesn't get the final jeopardy, neither do his opponents."  Farking douche.

2013-03-15 10:38:17 AM
Isn't this the chance that Pat Sajak has always been waiting for?

Seriously though, I'd like to see an unknown or as JerseyTim said Ken Jennings step in.

2013-03-15 10:38:21 AM
He only has to pass the " Chase a Hooker without breaking you ankle" test to get the job.

Allan Thicke!

I_Am_Weasel: Allan Thicke!

Or Tom Bergeron or Bob Saget!

It'll be Conan for ten months, then Jay Leno.

2013-03-15 10:42:47 AM
Ken Jennings would be a great pick.

Also: HOW IS IT MATT LAUER'S FAULT THAT THE TODAY SHOW IS LOSING RATINGS??

A building full of producers and directors and writers and managers... and it's HIS fault??

There is so obviously a personal vendetta going on it's not funny. Matt Lauer is a household name, I don't even watch that show and I know who he is. When they fire or not-resign him I'm gonna laugh as they fall ever further.

Maybe, just maybe, it's the bland neutered generic pablum of content that gets to air. Just maybe.

JerseyTim: I'd go with either Ken Jennings or Pat Kiernan.

That would be quite excellent.

If they're thinking of using a journalist they should go with Soledad O'Brien. She did well as a contestant as I recall.

That would suck, we'd only get through half the questions at the rate talks.  Chalk me up for Ken Jennings, hell I'm fine with Bob Costas.  His Jimmy Fallon Olympic skits shows he at least has a sense of humor.

It's the generic pablum and the fact he's the guy receiving a king's ransom to spout it is why people don't like him.

Why does it have to be a famous person?  They'll just get bored after a couple years and they'll have to find a new person all over again.  Just get a guy/gal with good inflection who can read a card without shiatting his/her pants.  People like me don't watch Jeopardy because they like the host.  We watch it because we're smug know-it-alls who like showing off how much useless knowledge we've learned from spending too much time reading books and surfing the web cultured we are.

Well, why not go all the way?

Pick three candidates and make them play Celebrity Jeopardy for a week.  Highest overall score gets the gig.  Make it Trebek's last episode.  Ratings spike for new host.

2013-03-15 10:52:27 AM
I've been watching Jeopardy! since I was a kid. We would sit down as a family in the TV room and watch Jeopardy! and see who could get the most answers right. I usually did pretty well. If you watch the show enough, you get a feel for what their core topics are and you learn what a best guess is. Anyway, that's not the point...

Trebek is like family to me. He's a damn icon. In my lifetime I've never known another Jeopardy! host. Replacing him has to be an absolute home run. Matt Lauer is not suitable. Don't get me wrong, Trebek can be smug at times, too... But almost always in an endearing way.

Turn on GSN sometime and watch the Richard Karn episodes of Family Feud. What a train wreck. That's what I envision with the wrong host for Jeopardy!. If you watch it now, with Steve Harvey, it's outstanding. He was an absolute home run for that job.

I have felt for several years now that the best replacement for Trebek would be Ben Bailey. I've heard other people mention it as well. He's charismatic and intelligent. He really draws you into the show. I would consider him a home run.

/Also, paging Kann, if you make an appearance in thread I have some questions about the Jeopardy! experience...

While the host isn't the main attraction, a bad host can definitely turn off your audience.

Or, that Lauer is a smug pretentious d-bag that viewers can't relate to, because he is a smug pretentious dbag. Just a theory I'm working on. Your idea has plenty of merit.

NBC is the most in love with its own image network, that too has something to do with why nobody would want to watch.

The olympics in 2010 and 2012 did it for me. The cult of personality at NBC is not something I am interested in joining.

Subby obviously hasn't seen Jeopardy in a while.  There are no $500 clues anymore.  Jeopardy round is in $200 increments.  Double Jeopardy is $400 increments.

Ben Bailey is awesome, but a suit and tie wearing studio gig just isn't what he is.  He looks like a cabbie, which is why he works as a cabbie.

definitely how he says it, and that he always has to say it.  Particularly if a champion wins with small amounts.  And the whole "luck" thing, holy hell that guy had an intense first 3 games.  One of them he only had 1,000 or so going into double and ended up winning with 20k.  He makes great bets on final jeopardy, and somehow that's luck.

Alex's conversations with contestants are like a Fark party with no booze or drugs.

I'm voting for Ken Jennings.

Watson. It could be the host, and they could get rid of all the researchers since it knows all the answers. And with the new hardware upgrade due in 2014, it would have enough bandwidth to calculate the scores.

NdGT is far too busy being too awesome at his job and sciencing for a television show.

Keegan-Michael Key?

Whomever does replace him has to grow a mustache. Trebek's cheesiness has been a trademark of the show and pivotal of its continued success. The new host must be chosen wisely to continue the tradition and not repeat the clusterfark strategy of Family Fued.

I would love Neil Degrass Tyson, but he'd better serve the nation as president than the host of Jeopardy.

Oh that was such a glorious episode. I loved every second of it. I find comedians are usually like that. "Funny" people who are actually serious and well-read in person.

Wolf is such a moron.

I suppose so, but his income was decided by NBC, they can't turn around now and blame him because he makes so much money. It's not his fault they went full retard with salaries and who's responsible for it being a "#1" show.
I don't know anything about him, the handful of snippets I've seen don't make him out to be a d-bag, and he was funny enough in that Will Ferrell movie.

I wonder if he gives a sh*t about the whole thing. $25 mil a year? How could you even be interested in 'working' anymore?

Nana's Vibrator: I always get the feeling that Alex Trebek has a working knowledge of the answers & questions presented on each show.  I have a hard time believing Matt Lauer ties his own shoes.

Exactly. The reason Trebek is such an awesome host is because even though he encounters some insanely knowledgeable contestants, you still feel like he could whoop there ass if he actually played against them.

Put Lauer out there and it would would just be awkward as he fumbles with tough words and tries to reference what the contestant's wrong answer was attributed to. He'd look like an idiot compared to the contestants and that wouldn't bode well for how the show should play out.

2013-03-15 11:19:34 AM
I saw an episode of Jeopardy where Trebek called some woman a drunk and blamed some sports team's loss from her personal anecdote on that fact.  The stunned look on her face was priceless.  And that's when I realized Trebek can be a dick.  Lauer would not be a terrible replacement, then, in that regard.
