Hypocrisy? from Republicans??

No way.

2013-03-15 09:27:12 AM
Why are there two articles on this? I mean, it's fantastic and all but...two articles?

2013-03-15 09:27:27 AM
While it's always nice to see someone become more open, what a hypocrite.   All of a sudden it takes a bit more thought when it personally involves you, huh?

2013-03-15 09:27:33 AM
He kind of has to. If he doesn't, he looks like a guy with family disagreements, and a Republican can't have that.

2013-03-15 09:27:48 AM
Its a shame it has to come to this instead of being open minded from the offset, however when one loses their bigotry it is a reason to celebrate

This reminds me of 4 headlines down.

How many gay sons does this guy have?

2013-03-15 09:28:34 AM
So, essentially, he's willing to change policies if they effect his family personally, but only then.

2013-03-15 09:28:34 AM
It sounds like the gay thing broke into his monkeysphere (google it) and once it became personal enough he changed his views and stated so publicly rather than kick his son to the curb.  Not the worst thing in the world.   Good for him, and good luck to his kid.

2013-03-15 09:28:36 AM
Apparently no other gay constituents matter.  What a self serving twat.

2013-03-15 09:28:44 AM
Wait a second, this guy has TWO sons who have now come out as gay?  Wow.

2013-03-15 09:29:01 AM
Saw this on the news this morning.  Now it's A-OK since you found out your kid is gay.  Got it.

Vintowin: Hypocrisy? from Republicans??

No way.

I don't think this is hypocrisy.  I don't know anything about this guy, but someone changing their stance like that is good.  Better than the denial, I have no son bs.

Shrugging Atlas: How many gay sons does this guy have?

All of them

2013-03-15 09:29:52 AM
I was unaware that Ohio's Senators were both Republicans, and that both were named Ron Portman. That both also have changed their position regarding same-sex marriage due to a homosexual family member (a son, in both cases) is an extraordinary coincidence.

2013-03-15 09:29:53 AM
It's a repeat, and it's not "Spiffy" it's "Assinine". He should have ALREADY been supporting it, but only when it affects him personally does he care about the freedom of other people. That's how an asshole acts.

2013-03-15 09:30:08 AM
Next up: Portman drops opposition to abortion when his daughter gets pregnant.

Is it a wider stance?

If only the GOP could look at itself as each other's sons, they'd be more accepting of it. We already know enough of the GOP is ...*cough*..."accepting it".

Since this thread is almost certainly doomed to go red as a repeat, I have a totally unrelated question: For statistics purposes, does a green-then-red thread still count as an "approved link submitted" in your profile?

Too bad their isn't some book out there that tells you to do unto others and such. Think how much better off these Christians (and society) would be if they only had some guidance ...

2013-03-15 09:34:17 AM
Yeah, what a hypocrite!
Like everyone who's family member gets a deadly disease, and then they're all like "We've gotta raise money for this charity. It's about saving lives!!!", when they never cared about it before.

Before:  I am a god fearing bible thumping moran and god says teh gheys are minions of the devil.

After : I am a god fearing bible thumping moran and now that I look realize this impacts MY family I have looked more closely at the bible. Apparently the holy book can be interpreted any way you like and I now choose to focus on the lover and understanding aspects of the book.

Gosh, it's almost like these holy rollers can bend the bible to support any opinion they already have!

Instead of applauding the guy when the reality of same sex marriage in this country hits him close to him, and he actually changes his stance to support it... you guys are tearing him down?

What the farking fark?

I mean, seriously, the vast majority of the time I see Republicans advocating something, they're slime. And when they act like slime, they deserve to be treated as such. But when a Republican finally does something right and acts like a goddamned decent human being, you farkers belittle him. WHAT THE HELL GUYS THIS IS NOT HOW TO DO POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT.

Yes, bad on him for supporting DOMA and being against it previously. But you know what? GOOD ON HIM FOR REALIZING.

Yeah, there's no difference between a lay person suddenly taking up a new cause and a politician who was willing to stand behind discriminatory beliefs until it affected his family.

A better analogy would be:  Like everyone who used to lobby for not helping sick people but changed their mind when their family member gets that disease.

Yes, because actively working to deny people their civil rights is exactly the same as ignoring them and letting them go about their business.

It's not really hypocrisy. It's more like they couldn't remain ignorant anymore.

statistically, we can't count on bigots all having gay children to "cure" them of their idiotic prejudices.   Sad.

Just more proof supporting my theory that republicans only understand something when it directly affects them or their children. I'm married to one, he literally cannot put himself in another persons shoes even for a second.

Yes, it's very frustrating at times.

I applaud this man's COURAGE.  (c.f. yesterday's Cheney thread!)

It's what makes the Hottentot so hot.

I just had a look at his WIkki page.  The word Gay only comes up in relation to todays events.  He doesn't look like a gay-obsessed, firebreathing lunatic as much as a guy who had been willing to toe the (fracturing) party line up until he reached a break point.

I think what people are criticizing is that his JOB is to actively try and push legislation that is best for all the people he represents. In that role he decided to support things that HURT people he is supposed to represent because he is such a tool he couldn't grasp the idea of gays being worth protecting.

Now, all the sudden, his precious crotch-fruit is "one of them" and all the sudden he realizes gays are people!?!?! I agree with the other posters. This guy is a asshat who is only changing his opinion now because it's his precious snowflake.

It's like he killed his last 3 wives and he only BEATS his current wife so now you want us all to admire him.

I know, that's not what you said but I still think that deep down this guy is an asshat just looking out for his own tribe.

It's not even that. His son told him in 2011 and it's taken him two years to bring this up. Why? Because if he had done it in the last election, he probably wouldn't have made it through the election. New one's coming up, waited to throw it out until after a good time after the election while hoping his electorate forgets about it in time for the next.

Or that he sees the public opinion turning and hopes this "revelation" will net him more votes next round.

Either this was a politically-based position change or campaigning against it before was one. Both tell me he doesn't want to show his true values unless it benefits him in an election. Just the person I want representing me...

This is why gay marriage should be mandatory, along with gun ownership and abortion.

.

He's on the right farkin side of the debate now, skippy. Like most people, it took first hand experience with someone he was close to to open his mind on the subject.
But no, you're still not happy. because he's from that other party.
Much better if he'd just continued his stance and disowned his son, right?
