It's just occurred to me ... observed from the correct angle, the US congress bears a striking resemblance to professional wrestling.

It involves a large cast of mostly interchangeable and forgettable jobbers, with a few superstars whose main job appears to be to generate hype and drama rather than actually get in the ring and do their job.  These superstars are often accompanied on all their public appearances by large entourages of said jobbers.  Factions are formed along contrived ideologies, and picking a fight with someone else simply because your respective faction loyalties are opposed is held up as the epitome of good conduct.  Designated mouthpieces of the factions engage in endless verbal circling and sparring matches, but at the end of the day nothing has been decided.  Supposedly the position of "superstar" is determined by the response of the crowd, but in reality the greater organization has nearly complete control over how events are portrayed and blatant manipulation of what is presented to the crowd is the norm, in order to ensure that the crowd maintains the "correct" opinion.

There's even the occasional surprise defection from one of the superstars to an opposing faction.  Personally, that's the hope I'm desperately clinging to right now:  Boehner has successfully built up a ton of heat from the crowd, the time is perfect for a out-of-left-field heel-face turn.

Obamacare is useless as a bargaining chip. Despite polls showing widespread trepidation over health care reform, the public spoke louder with its re-election of Obama.

Republicans can't honestly believe they'd get anywhere with defunding the ACA so they continually throw it out there as a chip to get Obama off his insistence on tax increases. Wasted time.

Boehner is doing the right thing as speaker in telling them to let it go. Give up, already.

Why is it that Cantor is always lurking around in photos behind Boner?

qorkfiend: TommyDeuce: He actually said shutting down the government was not their goal? Someone ought to introduce him to about half his party.

What's mind-boggling is that the half of the GOP who don't want a shutdown will gladly accept a shutdown before breaking ranks and joining the Democrats to prevent one.

Actually, enough GOP are willing to break ranks and join the Democrats, since it only requires a few dozen Republicans to pass something with Democrat support, but that requires Boehner to bring the vote to the floor...

I'd expect to see that scenario play out again, just like with VAWA, the debt ceiling, and the like.

Boy, when the Bush administration left, they sure took that whole "Unified party in the face of any adversity/no public disagreements" philosophy with them.

somedude210: I've always been under the impression that Boehner really wants to get a budget compromise that is in tune with Obama's ideas, he's just been held down by Cantor and the Tea Derpers who control the message

Back a year plus ago or so when this fight was first going on, Boehner was ready to make a deal with Obama.  Cantor talked him out of it, gambling they'd win big in the 2012 elections and then they could do whatever they want.

I think its a little hypocritical for us Farkers to make fun of Boehner because he is an alcoholic, but, yeah, his glass is filled 3 times before lunch.

Then he needs to just take control and get things done. He should draw a clear divide between mainstream Republicans and the tea party loonies... just come right out and say "we agree with you on points A and B, but we're going to compromise with the Democrats for C through Z so the country can move forward."

What's the worst that could happen - getting challenged in the Primaries next year?  Worst case scenario - he loses his congressional seat, and goes on to make $25k/day on the lecture circuit. Or gets a seven-figure contract with Fox News (or one of the Super PACs).
