(CNBC)   Realistically, at this point, the only people confirmed for Episode VII are: me, some guy from customer service, and Steve, who lives next door; and a bunch of other dorks. We'll be known as "The Audience"   (cnbc.com) divider line 18

As much as I am a HUGE Star Wars fan, and I am (shut up all of you closet Farkers that agree with me...), I think it's a gigantic mistake to make more films.

Considering how many novels, comics, fan films, cartoons, radio plays, 3D cartoons, etc, etc, etc...  There are really no more stories to tell here.  Especially since the only ones really qualified to continue writing in the canon universe, sold the whole thing to Disney.

And, especially, ESPECIALLY, even the ones that were qualified before totally screwed the pooch with the last 3 movies.  They just got worse and worse as they went along.

So color me unexcited about this whole idea.  I don't care if they make the films based on extended universe canon novels.  The stories are better left as they are.  Maybe we'll all get really lucky, and they will actually make a great set of films.  But I'm not holding my breath.

I'm actually happy that Disney is already putting their heels down and saying that Lucas is no part of the future of Star Wars.  Sure, I think most of us want to see the characters pass the torch, but good on them for putting him in his place.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Joss has more he wants to do with the genre than he could fit into thirteen TV episodes and a single movie.

FTFA:"This is one of the biggest franchises ever created so we're thrilled to have the opportunity to be associated with it and bring it into the future," Iger said of "Star Wars."

Bring it into the future?  C'mon man, Star Wars was a long time ago.

I've been thinking this for a long time, but this will be the first time I express this theory to other people: I think Ep. I - III couldn't help but be lame. Despite what he has claimed, I never believed for a moment that George Lucas ever expected to make more than one "Star Wars" film. It was written as a standalone. Writing sequels is easy, you can twist and turn the storyline any which way you please. But writing pre-quels is far more difficult. You have to make all the loose ends tie together, explain all the backstory, and at the barest minimum, don't create any contradictions. With a movie franchise as well-loved and thoroughly analyzed as this one, that's next to impossible. That Lucas managed to do it AT ALL is kinda impressive. Then he even tried to work in some new characters as well. Some hit, some were Jar-Jar. But all in all, not a bad job. Not a great one, but not a bad one.

Having said all that, freed from the constraints of having to provide backstory to existing films, I expect Eps. VII - ??? to be much better than I - III.

Star Wars peaked at "Empire Strikes Back" in 1980 and has been gone downhill for the last 33 years. Time to just let it die man.
