Coincidentally, I too am looking for donations for the non-essential things in my life.

If I can get just 1,000 Farkers to donate $5 each, I can spend the Summer in Eastern Europe.

Should be a blast. For me, that is.  I'll bring back a few matchbooks.

A matchbook for the price as a low resolution jpeg? Damn, that's a good deal.
Sorry subby, you just got one-upped.

I would love to help out, but my wheelchair is dead and I'm trapped here at home until I find a way to replace it.
I wonder if kickstarter would let me raise funds.

Cool.
If you're driving down Route 66 in Illinois, pick me up.
I could use a lift to Albuquerque.
I'll roll up a fatty, make some finger sandwiches, and kick in 5 or 10 bucks for gas

Whatever dude...

/Lives near Route 50, and have for most my life. Been coast to coast on it.

I happen to remember that there was a national road system before the interstates. It's not as hard as it sounds, you just have to roll through more small towns. Which seems to be the purpose of this man's trip.

You might want to find Interstate 60, if that's at all possible.

I doubt it. LOL

But I AM going to try to rebuild my wheelchair for off road use and equip it with multiple cameras. Just spent an hour setting it up on kickstarter.

Why not put something up on the bulletin board for a ride share?

I'd offer some assistance that you mentioned needing but you seem to be bypassing my state. Oh well. Have fun!

Did subby post this over on Jalopnik too?

I'm trying to get enough money to put all the FarkTV episiodes on Blu-Ray and sell them through Amazon.  After that I am going to seek funding for the establishment of the Helen Keller Memorial Audio-Visual History Museum.  My current kickstarter though is seeking people to buy me pron site memberships so I can research what the best jerk lube is.  It's for science!

/Seriously, Subby...you are going to have to do better than that.

It must really be difficult having to keep clicking gps "alternative" routes.

Weird though, when I did something like this (drove cross country as a 19 y.o.) it was funded by this strange invention called "having a summer job with lots of overtime." If only there'd been an internet to beg money from strangers from instead.

Five bucks and the reward is a "low res" JPEG image?   That's the best you can do?

/also the traditional Cannonball route, which is admittedly on an interstate, is 2988 miles.  If your route is 14k miles, you're driving across country in excess of 4.5 Cannonballs.  Plan your route better.

Maybe I should start a kickstarter project:

I was born with a congenital heart defect and had congestive heart failure at the age of 14, now I have a defibrillator implanted in me to make sure my heart doesn't go into a ventricular tachycardia. But I have only been dealing with the VT stuff since I was 18, no biggie I'm 31 now. I lost my job back in 2011 and for 9 months did odd and end jobs to try to make it but I still had to tell my wife we had to sell the house and move in with relatives. 9 months and credit went to shoot, because I had a bank reposes a car from me after the third missed payment despite me explaining my situation and having paid the note for 5 months being technically unemployed. Now we are finally getting back on our feet, but with hospital bills (She has NF as well, and I am a progressing Type 2 diabetic despite my losing weight and doing what I am suppose too) and having to have paid for our own private insurance till I got my current job (to the tune of $1200 a month) I am flat broke. But hopefully we will be out of her parent's guest house by the end of this year and back to where we were in 2011. So basically all of this is to tell you I want to sponsor you $5 and you can keep the .jpeg, just do me one favor.......don't bill me till January 2014.

Thanks!!

If  you biked across America or hitchhiked you'd save money

$15,000 to drive across the country? 14,000 miles? Are you hitting every damn state?  I drove from west Texas to New York, cost me about $300 in expenses.

Here's a tip, take the $309 you've raised already and go to Home Depot and buy a lawn mower. When you run out of money for your trip, mow some lawns for gas money, if you swing through Texas, I'll give you $40 to do mine and you can keep your low res jpg.

Lsherm: Can you do better in photos than an established American author did with words?

Well, Travels With Charley is 75774 words long, so subby just has to take 76 pictures to win.

Yea, I dont get the "Wow, this will be an Epic, the likes of which has never been seen" vibe of this.  So, you want to drive and dont want to pay for gas?  its not like you need hazarous duty pay to take a road that doesnt have red-white-blue highway signs on it.

In Texas most speed limits are 70 until you get into town, and there's miles and miles of road between towns.

For $15k you could fly first class -- and have some cash leftover for a hotel.

Not one of the levels, not even the highest, offers a copy of the book as an incentive? Really?

Worst Kickstarter project I've ever seen.
