Well, I'm not young, but I live in a party school town. Blursday has always been the first day of the weekend around here. Wednesday is specials day, Monday is sports day, and Sunday/Tuesday is service worker weekend. Yes, life here revolves around the bar.

balisane: I do it accidentally because I usually crosspost to FB from my Twitter client. Don't see why you would do it otherwise... until now.

FTFA: "Right. But where you see hashtags, Facebook sees dollar signs. Like so many recent Facebook experiments and site changes, the hashtag idea sounds clunky when you think about it from the user's perspective, but rather ingenious when you consider it from a business perspective."

I can tell you from experience that advertising on Facebook, unless you're already a big established business, is a huge freaking waste of money. This will be the same. I spent about $120 last year (for clicks) and maybe ~$15 this year trying out their ads for my store page, and now the 'sponsored' post bullshiat, and regret both. I got about 375 likes out of the stuff last year with very very few actual repeat traffic to the storefront, and the sponsored posts actually had LESS exposure than when I just shared them on my own news feed.

Fark Facebook's ads. They are not at all helpful for the sole proprietor. Thank (IRS) for business expenses.

2013-03-15 06:34:40 AM
Facebook and twitter.

Basically, corporations communicating like vapid empty headed kids to get other empty-headed people to buy their trendy crap

For instance Facebook games are obviously designed to:

1. glean marketing information from young kids just by the way they play their games to sell to third parties to sell you crap
2. make you pay your "Facebook credits"  (which cost real $$) to advance in the games.

Yet kids today seem to be blissfully ignorant of this and blindly give up their privacy to get involved in this marketing.  Follow us on Facebook and Twitter? No thanks. Even Linkedin which is supposed to be serious is absolutely loaded with those "make $$$ fast at home"  and "We can make your resume perfect and send it to 100's of  employers" scams.

At least with old-school media you can regularly clear your browser cookies or reset your ADSL connection periodically to confound these annoying marketers.

RY28: Isn't a "hashtag" just a number sign ?

Sort of.

In the days of rotary dial telephones, the # would emit a 14.3GHz tone to wake up the sleeping call center assistant.
When push button phones became prevalent in the 1970s, the tone was lowered to 2.2 Gigawatts to lessen hearing loss.
Most interesting, if you push the # sign on the telephone in sync with the Wizard of Oz, Pink Floyd will show up at your door.

parahaps: I totally get and share the annoyance over hashtags in nonhashtaggable areas. But... how is it really different from slashies?

THIS. Slashies started as a little HTML joke. Someone would write a long-winded rant and end it with /rant to signify they were done ranting about it and turning it off. Or perhaps /sarcasm to signal to others the above text was not to be taken literally. But now, like hastags, its simply become a useless parenthetical where people write all sorts of elaborations and useless meaningless garbage and commentary. So yeah-- people in this thread who think hashtags are dumb but use slashies in a Fark thread should just shoot themselves for being hypocritical jackasses.

Facebook communicates with a nature group of people that you specifically chose to interact with. This will cross-post shiat all over the place and clutter up your conversations with all idiots who think that their off-topic rant about the evils of aspartame or the Republican Party or Obama or evolution or whatever else is going to destroy our society when .

People have already been doing it on Facebook and driving me nuts. I guess if they *actually* do something it won't make me so crazy.

I had to start hiding people from Facebook due to the useless and gibberish hashtags. This isn't something I want to see:

"Grilling with the #family. #HotDogs #Hamburgers #Lauren #Sunshine! #backyardhamburgersaredelicious!"

2013-03-15 01:36:43 PM
so when discussing the hashtag do we mark posts as ##?

2013-03-15 02:57:05 PM
If they added an easy to use, smooth, seamless,  "block everything with this hashtag" feature, that would  actually be really awesome.  Like if I'm tired of my feed being cluttered up with the tons of posts about my area's favorite college football team on game day, I could block all posts that people were using the team hashtag on.  If I was sick of hearing about the new pope, I could block all the hashtag pope posts.  I think the first thing I'd probably block, though, is #fml.  I've yet to see a single post that people have used that abbreviation for that wasn't just stupid spoiled whining.  A hashtag blocking feature would totally help people edit their own feeds by subject, rather than by people. I've got some people that I love a lot of what they post, but there's a few areas that I tire of their interest in or opinion on, and there's no way to edit which posts I see by them.  I can edit more or less of them as a whole, but not which stuff.  I don't want to see less of their posts, I want to see less of specific topic posts from them.

Yeah, thanks, been here for over 10 years. What I am saying is they started out as something entirely different and changed into their current form, which is remarkably similar to hashtags.
